Hi

There're lot of translation items appeared to be marked with severity 2 when nothing actually changed in text (at least, with Russian translation). Once the translation interface requires those items to be changed, I cannot just save them again, but they really don't need changes. The list is very loooooooooooooong )
10th-Jun-2008 10:25 am - Updating FAQ translations on demand
"Cartooney crab holding drink"
Even for translation teams most diligent in keeping their FAQs up to date, there can be a need for support people to request spot updates, when we need to use a FAQ in a foreign language request and the translation isn't current. When that happens, it can be useful for support volunteers to ask translators to update the translations for one or more specific FAQs. If you are active in a translation team and are willing to be contacted when that happens, please answer the following poll. )

The notes for that string say "Don't translate this string; it needs to remain in English." Does that apply to all of it, or can the link text ("Make WebMoney Payment" in English) be translated?
17th-Apr-2008 03:12 am - lack of activity in the Swedish team
bread bread
It seems that I am the sole translator on the Swedish team. The current administrator, [info]bjorng, appears to be inactive which keeps new translators to be added to the crew.

I enjoy translating, but it's difficult to do on my own. I know that there are people that want to contribute and I would be more than willing to moderate LJ_Swedish and grant privs to them so that they too can help out. Can this be arranged somehow?

Sincerely,

Sebastian

19th-Jan-2008 04:27 pm - New FAQ variables
"Cartooney crab holding drink"
There are new FAQ variables available, which will help translators keep quoted user interface text in FAQs consistent with the actual user interface, across translations. These variables are described in http://community.livejournal.com/lj_userdoc/699462.html. The short story on what it means for translators and what you should do:

- Those variables let you include user interface text directly in FAQs, the same way you can already include FAQ titles.

- When those variables start showing up in English FAQs, paste them as-is in your translations, just as you would do for [[username]], [[journalurl]] and [[faqtitle]].

- When you see an original FAQ that doesn't use them and should, feel free to report it in lj_userdoc. :-)

(Thank to fioredelmale for reminding me I meant to post here too.)

plush bear
As hopefully most of you know, I'm the new leader of [info]lj_translate, and I need to know how active you are so that I can depriv those of you who are not interested in translating at all. Also, yay, after processing the results of this poll we will perform a Paid Account Fairy, giving everybody who votes a Paid account for Q1 2008.

I acknowledge that this poll is quite delayed, yeah, and even though I would like to give you a reasonable amount of time to vote. I decided that you can vote until February, and then I would process the results.

Also, because the poll has been delayed, the paid accounts of some of you may possibly end before I process the results. If you feel that this can happen, please vote and then let me know in comments.

Some more links to pages that need to be English-stripped.

Entire pages that require internationalization:

Page elements that require internationalization:

  • home page, the widget.qotd box (Writer's Block): the "View Answers" and "Suggestions" links
  • /update.bml: the Rich text editor interface includes some untranslatable strings (?uselang=debug doesn't work for the Rich text editor; you'll have to search the translation database manually to see)
  • /userinfo.bml: "Send this user a message"
  • /shop/vgift.bml: the heading and the intro text, the Shopping Cart (thanks [info]siljamus)
  • /site/: many things
  • /rename/: "*Discount price now through December 31, 2007!" (update the text or remove it entirely)
  • /manage/moodthemes.bml: mood names (angry, aggravated, annoyed, bitchy, etc.)
  • /manage/profile/: the drop-down list of countries, the list of time zones, "LJ User Messaging", "LJ Talk", the list of text messaging service providers
  • https://www.livejournal.com/login.bml, when not logged in: "Remember me"
  • /birthdays.bml: month names
  • /manage/domain.bml: the "Domain Aliasing" heading
  • /manage/voicepost.bml: all the items in the drop-down lists, the "(Help)" tooltip for the question mark icon (?)

11th-Jan-2008 01:55 am - Stale translations
портрет

I noticed some translation items that are not used anywhere on their corresponding pages. They seem to have been superseded by the text from newer item codes when the page content was updated.

Is there any way to automatically find and remove such stale item codes from the translation database so that they no longer appear in the Language Editor?

If not, I urge the developers to add that feature. When copyediting multiple translations, stale items cause great pains because they are hard to identify.

If you are a LiveJournal developer or a manager at Sup, please tell me in the comments whether you are going to accept this into your to-do list. Also please confirm the problem described in my diff bug report. I just want to make sure that my messages do not pass unnoticed.

7th-Jan-2008 07:33 pm - Diff problem with lj-raw or some other tags
портрет

There is a problem in the current implementation of the diff page (highlighted changes) in the translation system that makes it really difficult to update the translations for any long text that contains HTML.

Consider the section "Text Messaging" in this diff output. The highlighted version shows that the word "If" in the beginning of the paragraph has been deleted and nothing has been added there. In the Before/After section we can see that that is not the case. The word "If" is still in place, but it has been surrounded by additional HTML tags, including the <lj-raw> tag. It seems to me that the problem might be caused by the way the <lj-raw> tag is handled, but that is merely a guess.

The expected behavior would be not to strip any tags in the highlighted part of the page but to treat them as plain text. That way the translators will always know exactly what has changed, even if the changes only affected some HTML tags.

Could any of the developers fix this please?

7th-Jan-2008 10:26 am - Untranslatable text report
портрет

I've compiled an incomplete list of untranslatable text throughout the site.

Entire pages that require internationalization:

* The legal pages might need to be supplemented with a disclaimer stating that the translation is unofficial and that the only legally bounding document is the English version.

Page elements that require internationalization:

  • Client descriptions at /download/?platform=all
  • The word "Find" in the input field on the horizon.search bar
  • "Find people and communitites interested in:", "Go" in the Explore section on the home page
  • /update.bml:
    • the "View Thumbnails" link
    • the "Embed Media" link in the editor
    • the "Help" tooltip on the question mark icons (?)
    • the date for the entry (currently always looks like "January 7, 2008")
  • The "Create Account" button on page https://www.livejournal.com/create.bml
  • https://www.livejournal.com/changepassword.bml:
    • the "Username:" label
    • the "Proceed" heading
  • /manage/ (Horizon):
    • "expiring" in the paid account info box on the right
    • the "Manage Logins" link
    • the "Mobile Settings" link
    • the "File Manager" link
  • Many things on page /customize/options.bml (it looks like some of those cannot be localized via the i18nc S2 layers)
  • Language names on page /translate/

A quick announcement to say: I'm passing the reigns of translation over to [info]jemmix. He'll be in charge of coordinating translation teams, answering your questions, and generally doing all the things that I did (or didn't do, as the case may be *grin*). Welcome, Andrew. :)
13th-Nov-2007 12:43 am - Frank's gender
"Cartooney crab holding drink"
I understand that (unofficially?) Frank is a billy goat. How obvious is that supposed to be, marketing-wise?

Reason I'm asking: there's no word in French that maps to "goat of unspecified gender, with no implications at all", so basically I can make Frank a billy goat or (something that's most likely) a nanny goat, but I can't make him a goat.

Well, I want to become active again :)
