Well everybody learns differently so I don't want to presume to suggest an exact course of action, but I'll tell you what I did.
Before I was even sure I wanted to learn the language I surfed sites learning what I could about basic grammar. I always do this when I first start learning a language so I have some basis for comparing it to other languages I know. (I find it really helpful to learn by how a language differs from another and not simply blind memorization.) I found this rather helpful as my first tool for learning the language. After that I got a book (which I didn't particularly care for) and later a second which I recommend: Icelandic: Grammar, Texts, Glossary by Stefán Einarsson
And as you work your way through it take this advice with you— don't bother trying to memorize all declensions and all conjuagations as they come at you. I suggest you be familiar with some nouns and some verbs and as you work your way picking up vocabulary and other grammar eventually all those charts will stick as you use the words repeatedly in different sentences.
Good luck! And I suggest whatever you learn and feel like sharing or find interesting by all means do post it here. I think random observations about the Icelandic language would help this community as well as questions.
