2:36 pm [worldforger]	Lane Robins book signing at Border's Friday night, August 24, 2007, at 7:00pm Local author Lane Robins will be signing copies of her novel Maledicte at the Lawrence, KS Border's at 7th and New (where the first order sold out in one day) Come out with us and lend her your support! Publisher's Weekly says, "Lane Robins is a fantasist with a future." "Highly recommended." --Library Journal   "A strong-willed debute whose painstakingly developed characters and tortuous plots exert an undeniably intense, if grim, fascination." Kirkus Reviews You can see a brief excerpt from Maledicte at maledicte.com. (I think the lead-in paragraph for the excerpt is one of the worst in the book, and Lane keeps saying she's going to change it, but hey--Even the worst paragraph is pretty damn good.) Lane is one third of my local "writing cabal" that meets each week, so I got to read Maledicte before it came out in stores (nanny-nanny-boo-boo), and it rocks. 10:21 am [starstraf]	TODAY- Fiction Writers Emma Bull and Will Shetterly to Appear at Oread Books Emma Bull and Will Shetterly will appear for a reading and book signing on Tuesday, July 31, 2007 from 3:00 – 4:30 p.m. at Oread Books on level 2 of the Kansas Union on the University of Kansas campus in Lawrence. Each author is launching a new hardcover novel this month, published by Tor Books. Emma Bull’s new title, Territory, is a fantastic take on events in Tombstone, Arizona, in 1881. Will Shetterly’s book The Gospel of the Knife is a magical coming-of-age story set in turbulent 1969 Florida. The authors’ visit is presented as part of Oread Books’ yearly “Sci Fi July,” and free and open to the public. Emma Bull graduated from Beloit College, and then worked as a freelance journalist, editor and graphic designer. She also performs as a guitarist and singer. Her novel War for the Oaks won the Locus Award for Best First Novel. Her subsequent works include the novels Falcon, Bone Dance (a Hugo, Nebula, and World Fantasy Award-finalist), Finder and (with Steven Brust) Freedom and Necessity. Bull has also written screenplays, a children’s book and short stories. “Bull has quickly forged a stellar reputation for sharply original storytelling.” - Booklist Will Shetterly writes novels, screenplays, short stories and comic books. His books include Elsewhere, Nevernever, Chimera, Double Feature and Dogland. His writing is inspired by an adventurous life including work on his parents’ trading post near Ojibwe lands in northern Ontario, Canada, and at a roadside attraction they operated in Florida, which inspired Dogland. He has been an actor, small press publisher and screenwriter. In 1994, he ran for Governor of Minnesota and finished third in a field of six. “Compelling, absorbing, hard-edged work.” – Kirkus Review, of Shetterly’s Dogland Emma Bull and Will Shetterly have taught writing at Clarion West in Seattle, Washington and at the Pima Writers Workshop in Tucson, Arizona. They have conducted writing workshops in Los Angeles, California, and elsewhere and are members of the Interstate Writers’ Workshop. Bull and Shetterly are married and live in Bisbee, Arizona. Oread Books is a full-service, independent bookseller located on the University of Kansas Campus in Lawrence on the second floor of the Kansas Union. As a non-profit organization, all proceeds are given back to KU through student programs and activities. 10:50 pm [mckitterick]	next summer CSSF programs From Jim Gunn about next summer's programs: We thought you'd like to learn early about our plans for next summer. We'll have the usual Writers Workshop (June 24--July 5) as well as the second installment of Kij Johnson's novel workshop and the Intensive English Institute on the Teaching of Science Fiction (short stories, July 9-20), but the Campbell Conference will meet in Kansas City in conjunction with the Heinlein Centennial and the Science Fiction Research Association meeting July 5-8. Workshoppers and Institute students will have the opportunity to enjoy the Heinlein Centennial activities and perhaps some functions of SFRA for the price of their Campbell Conference membership. Campbell Conference activities (which will include a joint award ceremony with SFRA on Friday evening) will be a Saturday morning roundtable discussion on the topic of "Robert A. Heinlein and 21st Century Science Fiction" and maybe some filmed interviews; SFRA (I'll be one of the guest writers along with featured guest Fred Pohl and Allen Steele) and Centennial activities will provide other program opportunities (check out their websites for program details). Our activities (and SFRA's) will be in the Westin Crown Hotel (Centennial activities will be mostly in the adjacent Hyatt), so attendees might want to get rooms in one or the other early, or arrange to share a room at the Westin to reduce expenses; or you can reduce expenses still more by staying in the dormitory at K.U. and commuting (although the hotel garages charge parking fees). Because SFRA events start Thursday afternoon, we will complete the Workshop discussions on Thursday morning. A huge tent full `o books, right behind the library. Saturday, Sept. 30. Here's the plan so far: 8:30ish: Kansas City folks - gather at the Village Inn in Shawnee Mission for breakfast and convoying or carpooling. Village Inn 5800 Broadmoor St Shawnee Mission, KS 66202 913.236.7088 9:30ish: Jump in your cars and road trip it to Lawrence 10:00ish: Arrive in Lawrence - meet at Half Price Books on 23rd Street, then Oread Books on campus, then downtown to visit the Raven, Dusty Bookshelf, Signs of Life, Vagabond Bookman, Brits, Game Nut Entertainment, the Library Sale, and some of the other very fine and interesting stores within easy walking distance. And maybe one of the very fine downtown restaurants for dinner. And/or a street café for short breaks throughout the day to fondle your found treasures and show them off to the other book groupies. We'll be meeting at the Half Price Books on 23rd Street, then heading to Oread Books (of course), then going downtown to visit the stores there, and finishing up with dinner. BYOB, or bring a bottle to add to the bar and share--or both. In general we're encouraging people to bring booze, snacks, and mixers to share. Place: 1221 Connecticut in Lawrence, KS Time: 8pm until whenever on Saturday, September 9, 2006. Additional activities will include DDR, and piercings by a professional (who has over twelve years experience in the business and was, until a few days ago, piercing at a shop in KC) at lower than his normal shop rates, since this will be his last weekend in Kansas. Who knows what else we might do? Anyone want a mohawk or a funky hair color? Heh! I'll probably get my guitar out at some point, and anyone with an instrument is encouraged to bring it, too. It's 2-for-1 night on Tuesdays, so if we have an even number, it'll cost half the usual. Oh, and if you haven't been there before, you can get a beer at Libery Hall and drink it in the theater. 4:28 pm [mckitterick]	local comics signing Just got this from Joel, the owner of Astrokitty Comics: Writer David Hopkins (of Viper Comics fame) and artist Brock Rizy will be unveiling their new comic book, Emily Edison, here at the 'kitty this Wednesday, August 2nd, 2006! They'll start signing and selling their book at 1:30pm and be here until 7pm! If you buy a copy of their book, you can get a free sketch by artist Brock Rizy! Come out and support these independent creators! This is the first of many such signings Astrokitty will be doing throughout this year and the next, getting regional and local and not-so-local indy comic creators at the store for signings and Q&A sessions. Make this inaugural one great by showing up to support indy creators and learn about what it takes to get your book out there, how the industry works, and how the creative process works. Emily Edison is an all-ages adventure comic about a sci-fi/superhero girl who is the daughter of an ultra-tech-uber-scientist and, unfortunately, is as clumsy as she is adventurous. Note that all the links on this page open in the same window: This is to avoid opening a whole lotta windows on your computer, but I wanted to clarify so you didn't wonder what the heck. The time has come! Today we are announcing the finalists for the Campbell Award here, and the Sturgeon Award here.
