Everyone is going moderated! It'll be fun!
We've recently had a rash of posts that haven't followed the rules in the community info. As a result, the fabulous moderators and I (well, mainly I, so blame me) have decided to place the entire community on moderated status. When you first join the community, you are placed on moderated status until after your first post. Assuming that the post followed the rules, you are typically removed from moderation. It's been like that for about a year now.

The problem is that when I switched the community to moderated last year, I just assumed that everyone who already belonged to the community knew the rules. So, everyone was put on unmoderated status. I was clearly wrong - a lot of junk is still getting through. So, I'm currently in the process of putting everyone back on moderation.

If your first post is on topic and follow the rules, you'll be taken off moderation right away. So, it won't be much of an inconvenience, given that your fabulous moderators are on line practically all the time. :)

Here are the rules for your persual.

# Have a question? Please search here before asking:

http://www.livejournal.com/tools/search.bml?journal=knitting

Or see past entries sorted by tag.

Didn't find your answer? Try the google search at the bottom of the page. Read this entry first for tips on using google.

# Is your scarf curling? Can't figure out how to purl? Want to know more about blocking and felting? Just in case you might have a FAQ (Frequently Asked Question), please check the memories section before posting in the community. Also, at the bottom of this page is a list of helpful links to most frequently asked questions and subjects for debate.

# Please put all pictures behind an lj-cut tag:

[ your image here ]

# Cross-posting between [info]knitting and other knitting communities is not allowed.
The membership of most knitting communities overlap to a large degree, and making the same post in several knitting communities means that hundreds of people may end up reading your post multiple times. It also dilutes the value of other knitting communities, because they can seem to be just smaller copies of [info]knitting. No one wants that.

# In order to protect the Knitting community, and all of LiveJournal in general, posting copyrighted material is not allowed. As a rule of thumb, that means anything written after 1928 that hasn't been specifically released to the public domain. This includes patterns in old magazines, patterns in books that are out of print, free patterns from the internet, free patterns from your LYS, patterns from library books, etc. etc. etc. The Digital Millenium Copyright Act has made online communities very vulnerable to copyright infringement suits; LiveJournal is under a legal obligation to remove any infringing content from their site, which could include deleting your user account or even the entire community.

# Personal attacks upon community members are not allowed.

# Posting knitting related items for sale is only allowed if you are a non-commercial venture, and if you include other knitting content in the post. In other words, if you have some ebay auctions you'd like folks to look at, you can include a pointer to those auctions at the end of a normal knitting post.

# Debate can get quite heated in [info]knitting. Disagreements and debate are perfectly welcome in [info]knitting. However, you are required to allow comments on your post, and not delete those who disagree with you. This is a discussion forum, not a soapbox for anyone who wishes to claim it.

# If you are engaged in a gift exchange of some sort (such as Secret Pal), please do not post about it in this community. Such posts will be deleted.

# Your entries and comments are more likely to receive attention if you write in something resembling English, as opposed to uncapitalized, unpunctuated IM-speak.

So, this means, all of our next posts will be moderated, or if you're a regular poster, who has otherwise followed the rules, we won't see any change at all?

A recap of the rules is always a good idea. :)

Everyone's next post will be moderated. But if the post follows the rules, it'll be approved, and you'll be taken off moderation. So, everyone gets inconvenienced once, but hoepfully we'll catch the rule breakers before everyone else is stuck seeing them. Most of the time. :)

OK, maybe a stupid question, but please humor me - does this go for comments as well? Or, even if I comment appropriately, am I still moderated until I post on my own?

Yes, you are still moderated until you post your own because this comm has 4,000 members, and we can't possibly keep track of who comments nicely.

Cool, I'll probably be moderated well into next year then. ;)

Psst, could someone fix the spelling of Millennium in the info, please?

I suspect these rules were originally written in 2003, since 75 years from 2005 is 1930, not 1928. However, the international copyright situation is far more complicated than that - many works published between 1923 and 1977 may not move to the public domain until 2019. A better rule of thumb would be 'after 1923', not 1928. Further reading on Project Gutenberg's copyright explanation page. While publishing lawyers wrangle over the niceties of shorter copyrights, legal harmonizations, and works published solely in the US before 1964 and so on, an international community like this is better off sticking to rules similar to Gutenberg's.

You might want to amend the last # to include 'formatted in an easy to read fashion.' Considering the 5" paragraphs or the weird beatnik poetry posts I've seen on various communities, I find that to be about as bad as someone speaking in 1337, d00dz.

Just a thought.

Oh dear! You had to choose Novemebr first for this, didn't you :P It being the kickoff of nanowrimo and everything.

Yes this comment is bought to you by the absolutely offtopic apart from saying Yay! Big Mod decisions are fun. And double yay! reminder of the rules.

My thanks for a reposting of the rules. I wonder how frequently people do brush up on them. :)

Okay, while I actually agree that this is a good idea, it's making for a really quiet day on the community! And it would have to be on a day when I could use some distraction.

*grin* I mostly comment, and certainly don't post anything (much less FOs) often enough to be a problem, but I don't mind being on moderated status until I get around to posting again. :)

I'm just glad you guys are willing to do the moderator-thing... I know how obnoxious it can be to mod a community (I mod two of 'em myself), and it's a thankless job, especially if a community takes off. And [info]knitting is HUGE, so I'm perpetually impressed with how you guys do.

Keep up the fantastic work!

Doublechecking copyright rules

Say I'm having trouble with a particular section of a pattern. Would it be infringement to quote that particular section? From past discussions here, I've been under the impression that excerpts are OK. TIA for the clarification.

Yes, excerpts for the purpose of getting help are OK. Don't quote half the pattern and you'll be fine.

I'm rather new to LJ so how do I post a picture being an LJ cut? Is it acceptable to just post a regular hyperlink to a picture or does it need to be an LJ cut?

I thought that there was something potentially wrong with the posting, mainly me being a ninny and not reading all of the fine print AND using an LJ client and not posting right on the LJ site...so, I deeply apologize if you get three of one post from me. I was sort of confused.

Erm, sorry - I tried to post in the community for the first time and got it wrong about pictures.
Because I didn't find the rules til _after_ posting, I assumed large pictures behind a cut so didn't put the thumbnails behind one.

Feeling rather stupid...
