TAN TRO NESA!!!


Faris Raouf sent me some great additional information about the release of Tan Tro Nesa [1985, check the discography in the User Info page] and an error on the biography I copied from the Wallmart website a while back.

Hi there,

Way back in the 1980s there was a Welsh language TV drama series
(aired in Wales obviously) called Tan Tro Nesa. I honestly can't
remember exactly what it was about, other than it centred on a band.
The album of the same name, which you mention on your
livejournal.com page and featuring songs written and performed by
Katell, was actually released as a result of this program and
features the songs played by the band in the various shows in the
series.

I came across your page as a result of trying to trace the original
master tape for this album and TV series, because I think it's worth
a re-release -- the quality of Welsh pop is, in my opinion, not too
good at the moment, and quite frankly many of the tracks on the Tan
Tro Nesa album, even though they date back to '85, is an order of
magnitude better that what's getting airplay on Welsh radio and TV
these days.

But enough of all that. I wanted to contribute some translations of
the track titles for Tan Tro Nesa, and to point out a horrible,
horrible mistake in Katell's bio (not your fault obviously -- Wall
Mart got it wrong).

In the second paragraph, it says:

ALTHOUGH KEINEG RESIDES IN AND WORKS OUT OF DUBLIN, SHE WAS
ORIGINALLY BORN IN CELTIC BRITTANY. STILL, WALES SHAPED HER
FORMATIVE YEARS AS SHE SPLIT TIME BETWEEN HER FATHER, THE FRENCH
POET PAOL KEINEG, AND HER MOTHER, PLAID CYMRU, A WELSH ACTIVIST
WORKING FOR THE LIBERATION OF WALES FROM ENGLAND.

I have to admit that I have no idea what her mother's real name
actually might be, it sure isn't Plaid Cymru. You see Plaid Cymru is
just the name of the Welsh Nationalist Party. Plaid means Party, and
Cymru means Wales. It's what goes on the ballot papers next to the
box you put your cross in. And although I suppose it isn't totally
beyond the realm of possibility that her mother changed her name to
Plaid Cymru for some reason, I very much doubt that she would have
-- nobody does that sort of thing around here. It would be utterly
insane.

Anyway, here are some translations for you of the Tan Tro Nesa
(which incidentally means "Until Next Time") song titles:

1. UN FFORDD = ONE WAY
2. DIM ATEB = NO ANSWER
3. Y DYN ARALL = THE OTHER MAN
4. DÊL Y DIAFOL = DEAL WITH THE DEVIL or possibly more literally THE
DEVIL'S DEAL

1. LLOSG-EIRA = The literal translation would be BURN-SNOW but maybe
it should be FIRE-ICE? I'm not sure.
2. YSTRAD NOFA = I'm not sure about this one. Ystrad means VALE and
NOFA would equate to NOVA (an F in a welsh word is pronounced as a
V. A double F in Welsh is pronounced as a "normal" F)

3. TYNNU AR WAHAN = closest lit trans would be PULLING APART but the
song relates to relationships so I suppose it is more like "moving
apart"
4. CEFFYL BURGER = Horseburger*
5. DIWEDD Y GÂN = The end of the song

*This song was played in the program in the series where it was
discovered that someone was selling horse meat hamburgers or
something along those lines. I'm afraid my memory of all this is
very vague, so I could be totally wrong here.

Anyway, that's my contribution. I hope it proves useful in some way.
