If you get lost or need some help finding your way to the hotel or anything or you have a simple question please call me. Find a pay phone (costs 25 cents) and call my cell phone number 647-294-2282. If it goes directly to my voice mail it's because I am on the subway with no cell phone connection. So try again later. I will try to be available on my cell phone all day on Wednesday should anyone need help.

Once you get to your hotel room call me to let me know you have arrived, again if I don't pick up leave a message on my voice mail with your hotel phone number and I will call you back.

I will see everyone late Wednesday night when I help Gene make her way to the hotel from the bus station. Once I arrive I will have a welcome presentation for everyone and give you some pointers about being a tourist in Toronto.. The do's and don'ts

See you soon!

Trip Planning Jul. 30th, 2005 @ 10:24 am

Just a few days till the best meeting of the year. :)

I was looking for details on how to get to the hotel from the airport using the public transportation system. This is what I found:

Take the 192 Airport Rocket bus (South) to Kipling Station
Take the Green Line subway (East) to Spadina, St. George, or Bloor-Yonge
Take the Yellow Line (East/South) to College
Walk about 3 blocks (East) on Carlton St. to Jarvis St.

The Green and Yellow lines cross at those three stations, so I'm not too sure which would be best to transfer at. If they're all valid transfer points, then Bloor-Yonge would be best because that would make for the shortest travel distance.
Veg says transfer at Bloor-Yonge, so disregard the other stations.

If somebody here knows a better way, please correct me. :P

It might be kind of annoying waking from the sub station to the hotel with luggage, but oh well.

Well, thought I might Jul. 22nd, 2005 @ 12:05 pm

EC2005: Hotels and activities, and another note Jun. 7th, 2005 @ 01:27 pm
[info]genotoxin
I've posted the hotel and a list of activities on the JCF: http://www.jazz2online.com/jcf/showthread.php?p=288023#post288023

However, one thing I need to note is that people need to start confirming for sure that they're coming, hopefully within the next month. I'm trying to weed out the "Maybes" and try to get a better idea of who's coming, so if you can, let me know about your status within the next month or so.

And as the post says, I'm open to suggestions about activities.

» EC2005: Hotel + Activities
Okay, after contacting a few hotels regarding discount rates in Toronto, I've gotten the general idea that the cheapest deal would be at the Days Hotel Toronto (http://www.dayshoteltoronto.ca/) which could give us $129 CDN a night deals on the weekdays, for a group of about 10-15 rooms. Actually organizing reservations and roommates, and everything else, will need to be done soon.

One problem I noticed is that out of the activities Axie and others have listed, a lot of them seem fairly exclusive. Things like bars and clubs wouldn't really appeal to a lot of us, or we'd be too young for it. There are some good things which we should definitely do, like going to amusement park, and the arcade. I'm also curious about how difficult it would be to actually get a LAN party going. I'm not all that keen on playing JJ2, but it'd be fun to do that alongside UT2k4 and some other LAN-friendly games.

Thoughts?

» EC2005: Toronto crap for the locals
Two EC2005 things that haven't been covered yet that should be: Hotels and transportation.

What are our options? We'd preferably want to get a hotel that's within or close to the downtown area. Can't be too expensive (by that I mean preferably less than $140 CDN a night or so) and should have a fairly high amount of rooms - enough to fit the predicted 15-20 or so participants for EC2005.

Another thing is transportation. Which are the most reliable transportation methods in town? Which will we use to get where? I'm not entirely opposed to a lot of walking, though some people might be, so it would probably be better to find transportation that is easily accessable from the hotel. Good pricing is obviously another factor, but big cities are usually good for that.

I'll let the Toronto regulars handle this one, seeing as how this stuff is hard to look up online. Unless someone else knows something about this.

On another note, I'm assembling an activities list and will hopefully post it on the JCF soon.
» Haze's Hideout version something
Some of you may remember that I manage this tiny site called "Haze's Hideout". And some of you may have noticed how it's gone quite stale the past few months. This due to moving to a different server, which broke quite a lot of behind-the-scenes-stuff, and more importantly the site is undergoing another makeover. The 6th by now, if I'm counting right and hopefully one of the last.

Most of the work is done by now and thus I've decided to let you, members of the JJ2 LJ community, have a sneak peek at it. Consider this a beta-test of the new website, which should go live in a few days. ;)

So any questions, comments and bugs reports are welcome. I hope you'll enjoy this beta of the new site!

» EC2005 Dates and Location
With not-as-much-as-hoped input, it seems like we're settling on the following:
Location: Toronto, ON, Canada
Primary Dates: August 4th - 8th (Thursday-Monday)

iCeD made a thread on the JCF for keeping track of who's coming, and what we're doing, and that sort of stuff. Post if you can possibly make it.

Now that we know 'when' and 'where', we can start pulling together 'what'. So that would mean getting people's input on exactly what they want to do, and with that we can plan out the larger events that most people want to do.
» Boston shibbeh.
Okay, after procrastinating much about getting this up here. It looks like Toronto is the general consensus, but as a fall-back/mind-change/Toronto-gets-sucked-into-a-black-hole, I have harvested some general information on Boston. Organized into 3 different categories, I'm doing a lot of this from my own knowledge of the area. Lodging: Okay, honestly, hotels are pricey if you're in a big city. Unless you want to stay at a grungy motel on the outskirts, *cough*no*cough*, we're not going to be able to do this REALLY cheaply. However we have several options and it's going to be relatively simple to make this affordable all around. I think the best way would be to book as a group. To do this, we'd have to know exactly how many people are coming and how many people we want to a room. How much are we willing to pay for a hotel, even if we're doing a group reservation? (At least high-speed internet is a given. If all else fails, we can have an inter-room LAN!  I work at a wire company, I can bring spools of CAT5 cable.) We have the choice of shelling out and staying at a really nice place, or we can stay at a mediocre one for a reasonable rate. It really isn't hard to get really good prices, especially as a group, at a nice hotel, and if we're staying two or three to a room, we'd be splitting the costs internally, thus cutting it down that way. (We'd have to discuss how much privacy then we need; maybe some of us might not be comfortable with sharing a room & bath & sleeping with 3 other people we've never met before.)I've looked at several hotels and inns in the area online and talked to a couple of them. We have options. Transportation: You will need to fly into Logan Airport. You can take the T, the Boston subway system, right from the airport into the heart of the city(which is only a few miles away), and this form of transportation would be our best bet for the rest of the holiday. It costs about $1.25 per trip, with some exceptions, and day, 3-day and weeklong(7-day) passes are available(which I think should be something we would plan on getting.) The prices are respectively $7.50, $18.00 & $35.00.

As those who live in cities with subways know, we can get pretty much anywhere we need to go with the T. Trains run about every 10 minutes, from 5 AM to 12.30 AM. If we stayed out later, we can get taxis or some buses run until about 3 AM. Taxis are to some extent, expensive. Buses, however: are about a dollar per trip, though they aren't as convenient as the T, we would probably see a little more of the city as we traveled. Also, if the T doesn't get you somewhere, it's a safe bet that one of the buses will, so we can always fall back, and anyway it's another option. Entertainment: Okay, I don't really know what we're interested in. We have of course the traditional touristie stuff. Museum of Fine Arts, Fleet Center, Aquarium(woot its so rad!...), Faneuil Hall...um, things like that. I don't know how we feel about...generic things. There is always the exotic theatre(yay) and music and art thing. Lots to do in that area. I think I remember Spaztic talking about a concert - that would always be fun, assuming we could agree. Being that its Boston, I'm sure there would be one going on. There's always stuff. There are several areas to the city. I grew up in the Back Bay area, which is very trendy, elite, and packed with struggling artists, but it's absolutely beautiful and very vintage Boston. It's great for walking through. Newbury Street is a favourite of mine, (FYI, the place where the original Newbury Comics came from) but all the streets are absolutely fabulous shops and restaurants and clubs. The Prudential Building, Copley Square, the Library, Kenmore Gardens, and there's a pretty exciting nightcrawler scene, which again, could be out of our budget, and could be not in our interests at all, considering we're kind of..um, underage, but is worth taking a look at. I would personally spend 237462 years here, but I think we might be better off grunging around with a more native attitude. I don't really know the whole scene; you know, what's cool and what are places we could hang out, because honestly when I lived in Boston I wasn't even double digits and therefore not old enough to experience the real scene. This is, logically, the most correctly informative site on Boston: www.boston.com. However, it obviously isn't going to tell all the exciting underground clubs and stuff. Would it be fun to just spend a bunch of days in a city together? To me, EC2005 is about the people. It's not really about DOING something like an amusement park or something. More like a holiday and we do whatever we feel like. Granted, I can see how, at least where parents are involved, certain parties would be more comfortable having a fixed plan. Okay, well there's input on that.

» EC2005 Planning Phase 2
(copies from the JCF)

Lets begin working on Phase 2 using what we have so far from Phase 1.

Location:
Toronto and New York City seemed to be the top picks for locations. A couple people have gathered some information on Toronto, but still nobody has seemed to have collected anything for New York City. So while NYC is fading out of the picture, I have spoken with Ducky and she has been busy collecting information on Boston, so we will probably have two locations to choose from. Once Ducky is finished putting together details for Boston, and the information collected for Toronto is also put together, then we should be good to make a final decision on the city.

Month:
Overall, early August seems to be the best time for most people, so I guess that's what we'll be shooting for.

Days:
Here's where I have something new for you. Since we know we're going for early August, I'd like to try to pin down the exact days people want. I wrote up a quick poll for people to take so we can try to find the best match for that.

-> Date Poll <-

So everyone thinking they might come, take that poll. If you don't understand it, I'll try to explain it a little better. My personal recommendation for the prefered dates (in case you don't really care or have anything in mind for that) is something like from the 4th to the 7th. That way both week days and weekend are included.

Activities:
I think we have the gereal idea, but now we have to wait till we finalize the city.
» It's good to be back...
I finally dusted off the old CD and went looking for a server. Glad to see I'm not the only one out there that did. :)
» EC2005.
I know that this is perhaps the billionth entry about EC2005, but I had some thoughts that I needed to present to the general public before disappearing until (possibly) May 2005. Although I am going to be mostly 'away' because of the new semester, anyone should feel free to start a healthy discussion here; I enabled e-mail notifications for comments posted and can return to engage in debates. I demand actual input (positive or negative).

NYC would be rather expensive, and everyone probably realises this already. Some potential attendees have suggested that, to reduce expenses, people room together in larger quantities (exempli gratia, four occupants sharing a hotel room). I would not want to share a hotel room with three others, though I am perfectly fine with others doing that. Of course, it would be cheaper for me (and the other person) if I could find a roommate. Who would be willing to share a hotel room with two or three other attendees? Who would want one roommate at maximum? Who doesn't want/need to have a roommate (mostly for people who are planning on staying with their parents)? I know that certain attendees would be fine with, or even enjoy, having more than one roommate, while others prefer more privacy. Perhaps people could respond and discuss the options. It would be best if the sociable folks stay with each other and those that prefer having their privacy either room alone or in pairs. Therefore, in order to hopefully make this happen, I would like people to answer what they would prefer (in terms of roommates).

Personally, I can only deal with one roommate. I would need someone who is quieter and willing to leave me alone when requested. I also don't want to deal with someone who will bring others into the room without my permission (since I am a very private person). I can engage in conversation, of course, but I doubt that we would end up talking nonstop about something superficial. Basically, someone who is quiet and extremely tolerant of others' privacy issues would be ideal. :P

Toronto is supposedly less expensive, and more people have given specific suggestions regarding activities. Note the specific part. There are obviously many things to do in NYC, but we are lacking many specifics. Some of the Canadians in the area might be able to house people. I have never been to Canada befrore and lack sufficient knowledge to discuss the matter. (If anyone from #jj2 has contact with Sheldon, could you inquire whether or not I could stay at his house if we have EC2005 in Toronto? I believe that he said yes, but I don't remember everything.)

Two good suggestions for activities are going to a zoo and going to a museum.

Camping doesn't seem very popular. I would not want to go camping.

A concert would obviously be problematic and most likely expensive. I doubt that there is anything that everyone would like, and I highly doubt that any of the bands that are popular amongst the community members would be performing at the particular location at the particular time. Even a movie might be somewhat difficult to arrange. It's hard to find one selection that nearly everyone will agree on. If anyone has additional input, please comment. If about twenty people come, we might need to split up into groups. I don't know how this would work. But I would definitely like to know how others plan on making this work out so that people don't feel excluded or out-of-place.

Money! I don't know how much I can contribute to a Fund anymore because of personal issues. I have a moderately well-paying job and so forth, but I can't simply demand money from my mother if something happens. I also need to continue putting money into my bank account for university. So I don't know. It would be ideal if others could help me pay for minor expenditures since I splurged on WC2004, but I could probably manage without the additional support. I also want to spend my own money on things that I want (outside of EC2005), so there.

About the dates - I cannot come in July because of summer classes and possibly work. Please, hold the meeting in August.

Finally - yes, I shall be back in May, perhaps sooner, and I would like actual planning to have occured by then. I sincerely hope that I was generous enough for WC2004, but I would like someone else to contribute this time - preferably people who know the area(s).
» EC2005 Planning Phase.. 1½
I already posted this on the JCF a few days ago, but I guess I'll post it here to.

copied post )

Nobody has seemed to put any effort into this at all yet, even though it's rather important. People who know the possible areas would be particularly helpful in this, I'd think. Otherwise, my option would be to start searching the web.
» More activity..
There were requests for more activity here.. the question then is, what should it focus on?

- Jazz Jackrabbit 2, as a game (playing experience, ideas)
- The  community surrounding it
- Our own lives (like what is posted at the individual journals)

For example, people could post any experiences with JJ2 in their lives here, or indeed meeting plans like Mono did.. Maybe their favourite JCF threads, or JJ3 or feature proposals. Any ideas for topics?

There's also the Rabbitjournal thing on J2O, which I think will not contain the same content as this (if it would happen, i would prevent that. Because I ache for new sites besides J2O..it's fun reading other people's sites too, you know. And brings inspiration). It's community news generation there, so news about level packs, clans and other things, etc. I don't think it's likely there will be a 'competition' problem between the two.
» EC2005 Planning Phase 1
I posted this as a thread on the JCF, so if you could reply there, that would be helpful. (If you strongly dislike the JCF or for some other reason prefer not to post there, you can post here and I'll factor you in.)

Out of the success from the shortly planned WC2004 meeting, we knew EC2005 must happen. Many people have already shown great enthusiasm in participating in this meeting, including Jazzers all over the US and Canada, as well as maybe one or two from Europe. What we need to start doing now is to form a general idea of how we can pull this together. The purpose of this thread is to poll those of you who are thinking of joining so we can get some statistics to further work from.

Location
For the location, lets first start by tallying which states people could possibly make it to. Here's a general list of the NE US states around which we're considering: NH, VT, MA, NY, RI, CT, NJ, PA, DE, MD, DC, OH, MI, MN, IL, IN, plus ON and QC in Canada. If you can't make it to any of these, then it's probably not worth replying. And if you want, you can separate your list into 'likely' and 'less likely' categories for a little bit of detail.

Month
Next, this will be sometime during the summer, so when about in the summer might you be available? You can give this in general terms such as Early/Mid/Late June/July/August.

Days
Also, which days of the week would you prefer? If only the weekends would work for you, then you can say Sat-Sun. If only the first half of the week works for you, then you can say Sun-Wed. You can give the range of days you'd be available, and you can also give the number of days you'd like to stay around.

Activities
Now, what are we going to do? This is greatly open to suggestions. This could also depend on where the meeting ends up being, but for now try to give general ideas. Some possible ideas could be going to a theme park, wandering around some mall, going to tourist attractions or going sight-seeing, going to see a movie, going camping (like those crazy Europeans), having a picnic somewhere, having a LAN party, going bowling, or just hanging out somewhere where we can chat and goof off or whatever.

Funds
What we decide to do depends somewhat on if you're able to pay for it. So just in general terms, how much do you think you could afford beyond your own traveling and lodging costs that would allow you to participate in whatever activities that could cost money. Could you pay to see a movie? Go to a theme park? Help put together a LAN party?

So, if you could just answer those questions if you're thinking of joining, that should help us plan further. Also if you have any other suggestions as to what we should be polling, bring them up now.
» Updated Layout
There, I'm done with setting up the new layout for now. And it's complete with a seasonal background.
» little bit of news
After looking back through this community, Mono made a suggestion for a new layout, but I got both lazy and busy to do it...so now he's a co-maintainer of the commune.

Yay Mono! Yet another thing you can run!
