Installing Japanese Language Support in Windows XP
1. Go to the Control Panel
2. Double click on the "Regional and Language Options" icon, a new window should pop up.
3. Click on the 'Languages' tab.
4. Check the "Install files for East Asian Languages" box, then hit apply. Windows will install the language support for East Asian languages.
If you'd also like to be able to input Japanese text, you'll also want to do the following:
5. Click on the 'details' button under "Text services and input languages" in the Languages tab.
6. Click the "Add" button under 'Istalled Services,' a window will pop up.
7. Scroll down and click on 'Japanese' in the top menu. Leave the second menu alone. Click okay.
To set up your language bar preferences, click on the "Language Bar..." button at the bottom of the "Settings" window.
Installing Japanese Language Support/Input for Macintosh OS X.3
1. go to system preferences
2. go to "international" under the personal group
3. go to "input menu"
4. check "kotoeri" (all that's really necessary to be checked under that is "hiragana", since you can change what you input to katakana/kanji/etc. while you're typing without having to switch to that exact input method)
5. close! (you may have to restart)
6. to change input, go to the american flag on the toolbar, and click kotoeri. you have to be IN the box you want to type in at the time, i.e. if you are active on the desktop, you turn on kotoeri, then go to type in safari/i.e., you'll have to re-click on kotoeri IN the program.

Installing Japanese Language Support in Windows 98/2000/Me
NOTE: You may need your Windows CD for this.
1. Go to Control Panel, Regional Options
2. Under the General tab, look for "Language settings for the system". Check "Japanese" in the list (and any other languages you may be interested in).
3. Once Windows has successfully copied the necessary files, navigate to the Input Locales tab.
4. Under "Installed input locales", click "Add".
5. In the dialog that appears, select Japanese. Click OK.
6. Click OK to get out of the Regional Options control panel.
You should now have an indicator in your taskbar labeled "EN". Left-click on it to switch input locales.
