Because a lot of people keep asking....

Installing Japanese Language Support in Windows XP

1. Go to the Control Panel
2. Double click on the "Regional and Language Options" icon, a new window should pop up.
3. Click on the 'Languages' tab.
4. Check the "Install files for East Asian Languages" box, then hit apply. Windows will install the language support for East Asian languages.

If you'd also like to be able to input Japanese text, you'll also want to do the following:

5. Click on the 'details' button under "Text services and input languages" in the Languages tab.
6. Click the "Add" button under 'Istalled Services,' a window will pop up.
7. Scroll down and click on 'Japanese' in the top menu. Leave the second menu alone. Click okay.

To set up your language bar preferences, click on the "Language Bar..." button at the bottom of the "Settings" window.

Installing Japanese Language Support/Input for Macintosh OS X.3

1. go to system preferences
2. go to "international" under the personal group
3. go to "input menu"
4. check "kotoeri" (all that's really necessary to be checked under that is "hiragana", since you can change what you input to katakana/kanji/etc. while you're typing without having to switch to that exact input method)
5. close! (you may have to restart)
6. to change input, go to the american flag on the toolbar, and click kotoeri. you have to be IN the box you want to type in at the time, i.e. if you are active on the desktop, you turn on kotoeri, then go to type in safari/i.e., you'll have to re-click on kotoeri IN the program.

What is an IME (Input Method Editor) and how do I use it?

the funny thing is, with me, i can input japanese characters in most places perfectly (internet explorer 6, win98). however, with the ime and japanese language packs installed correctly, i still can't really view any japanese webpages. japanese script still just doesn't show up - with ONE exception of my livejournal friends page. all japanese text on that page shows up perfectly. it's so strange, and annoying, and i don't know why! :'[

It could be a matter of the browser not picking up on the character encoding properly. Some web pages put an HTML header on the page telling the browser which language the page is encoded in.

Usually in the "View" or "Edit" menu of your browser, there should be a selection for "Character Encoding." From that sub menu, you can select what language the page should be viewed, like "Japanese (Auto Select)" or perhaps the individual styles of Japanese encoding (like "Shift_JIS" or "EUC-JP"). Choose one of those and refresh the screen. It should display properly after that.

You're a life-saver, but just one question:
Um, for the macintosh one, well when you select the "kotoeri" thing..um what if it's just got symbols (with flag things also) instead of that word =s
I ticked the one with the red dot and then it had an mac-apple in it, because i assumed that that was the one which was Japanese, but i'm not 100% sure.
Is that right?
Sorry if i'm being really stupid, sometimes i'm easily confused..

in windows xp to get japanese you have to insert the operating system disk for windows xp. It's a blue disk.

Heck, I don't ever move a tank around if it doesn't have a support right up its butt. Although to say the truth, for a head-on attack group it's better to have an assualt paired up with an anti-tank to minimalize the number of CP used (since they can fire off up to 3 rounds of explosive instead of just 1).

Thanks for the tutorial, but I have a question about the IME. Whenever I try to imput something in hiragana, I can only type a, e, i, o, and u characters. I can use the soft keyboard, but I'd much rather be able to insert the hiragana/katakana from typing. Is there some way you can help me?

Oh, never mind. I already figured it out :]

Here are the steps if someone would ask:

1. Go to the Control Panel.
2. Go to 'Clock, Language, and Region' then 'Regional and Language Options' (a window should pop up).
3. Click on the 'Keyboards and Language' tab then click the 'Change Keyboards...' button. A new window should pop up again.
4. In the General tab, click Add, then from the list find 'Japanese', click on the + then, you should see 'Keyboard', click on the + again, and finally check 'Japanese'.
5. Lastly, apply all the settings.

So, now if you'd like to input Japanese characters, here's how:

1. You should now see an ENG thing in the right-side of your task bar after you have done the instructions above. That's the Language Bar, there you can change your input language and keyboard layout.
2. Click on the ENG (it means your default is English) and select JP (for Japanese), and don't forget to click on KANA, so you'll be able to write in Japanese characters.

Hope this helps! :]

I've found that you also need to click the Microsoft IME box as a part of your step four or else when you type all you get is katakana and it doesn't match up with the romanji from the english keyboard.Once the IME is installed as well you just click which imput mode you want.
