1:46 am - A very different Gabriel, part 2

I finally finished the write-up I'll be using in my play-by-IM campaign; take a look and let me know what you think!

2:22 am - New Superior idea: Archangel of Hospitality

isnorden
After reading a fansite about Haagenti's hypothetical redemption, I began thinking of another possible "opposite number" to Gluttony: an Archangel of Hospitality, who encourages mortals to provide for others' needs and keep them comfortable. This Superior would be as old as civilization, probably even a former servitor of David's who felt more compassion for the weak. And he'd probably be a Mercurian, since they're the most sociable and Earth-adapted of the Choirs. (I considered a Bright Lilim for the Word of Hospitality, since they're good at figuring out others' needs; David would have trusted an "obvious ex-demon" even less, though!)

Any suggestions for attunements, Distinctions, or invocation mods? I'd appreciate those very much, thanks... :-)

2:23 am - A very different Gabriel (part 1)

isnorden
As some of you know, I've made some major changes to my campaign world--some of which make otherworldly politics more interesting, and some of which reflect real-world religious beliefs. My version of Gabriel, in particular, does a little of both...

The details as I've worked them out so far )

I'm still working on the Servitor/Choir Attunements and Distinction-related abilities; they'll appear here as I complete them. (Speaking of which, what do you think of the following Distinction titles: Vassal of the Word, Friend of Heralds, and Master of Divine Truth?)

3:55 pm - New Ethereal Discord: Meta Mentality

isnorden
A character afflicted with Meta Mentality believes (rightly or not) that the world he lives in is not the "real" one. He sees his life as a book, game, or other fictional work and suspects that other "real-life" entities (living in a different universe) control his actions. At the lowest levels, someone with Meta Mentality might sometimes wonder why he was written into a scene he doesn't like; at higher levels, he might actually mutter die rolls, movie directions, or some other controlling data out loud. Extreme cases of Meta Mentality are dangerous, since the afflicted may lead his friends into unnecessary danger. ("No big deal, that explosion is just a special effect!" or "They'll just roll us up again if we get killed...")

Meta Mentality rarely affects corporeal players, since most of them live lives too ordinary to equate with a fictional world. Most of its victims are ethereals (who depend on mortal belief in the first place), although some celestials have suffered from this Discord as well. (Imagine an angel who believes he's on an inspirational TV show, or a demon who sees the world--literally--as the set of a horror film!)

[I haven't got the level mechanics or point gain worked out for this one, BTW--any suggestions?)

12:01 am - Quick questions about vessels...

undeadmuse
UPDATE: Thanks for the info on vessels, everyone.  I had one more question (posted under undauntra's response) about vessels and eating.

A couple of quick question about vessels.

How are they made/created?  They were originally purchased with Essence, but that rule changed.  Other than buying a vessel out of character creation points during initial character creation, how do you get another one?  Does it have to be given by a Prince/Archangel?

Another question I have is: Do vessels have all the bones, organs, blood, etc. that human bodies have?  In other words, are they medically indistinguishable from human bodies?  Do they have a heartbeat/pulse, normal body temperature, etc?

Inquiring Minds Want to Know.

Pre-emptive thanks for any info.

5:19 pm - Infernal Player's Guide Discrepancy

undeadmuse
Hi, I just joined this community. I'm preparing to play IN for the first time. I have a question:

What's the deal with the Infernal Player's Guide's (PDF) "Demon Creation Guide" section stating that demons only get 7 Forces to start with? The Core Rules (PDF) that I'm using says 9.

Is this a typo for the IPG? It's not in the errata. Is it a typo for the CR? Again, it's not in the errata.

I just wondered if anyone else noticed this and what the consensus was.

Thanks.

EDIT: Thank you all for the clarification about newly fledged demons and not standard starting PC demons being 7 Forces. The section of the IPG that I mentioned, (starting on page 120) implies that the creation guide is for regular Player Characters. I'm guessing, then, that step 2 of that guide section (where it states 7 Forces) is a typo.

Thanks again. I'm looking forward to playing my 'Son' of Lilith!

2:16 am - Six Degrees of In Nomine

isnorden
How many GMs here have based NPCs and adventure hooks on the "Six Degrees of Separation" principle? Basically, a PC knows Contact A who knows Contact B who knows Contact C, and so forth; not every link in the chain is friendly (or even similar), but the ones at the closest end probably are.

The NPC I created here is two degrees away from a Kyriotate of Water in my party. I took one look at the Kyrio's stats and the last two guys' stats, and thought "Road trip across the country, anyone?" Feel free to use him in your own campaigns with as much tweaking as you find necessary--but please give me credit as his original creator.

7:08 pm - Questions for Book of Songs owners

isnorden
I'm designing an Ofanite NPC (12 Forces, not Wordbound) with a mortal Role as a Christian rock musician. Some of my ideas might clash with the official rules, so I thought I'd ask people who owned the Book of Songs about them:

  1. How does Israfel, the current Angel of Music, feel about Jean and his servitors? The idea of a Lightning Ofanite with unusual talent on high-tech instruments appealed to me, so I'm considering a borrowed-servitor arrangement if the relationship between those Archangels is good.

  2. What Attunement would an Ofanite of Music get for his Choir? (I should note it in this guy's stats.)

  3. What basic Rites does Israfel offer his followers, and which is most practical for a musician-on-the-road Role?

  4. Finally, are there any Songs in that book which seem appropriate for that Role as I've described it? (Zack, to use his mortal name, probably has a few attack Songs; his typical audience is a VERY tempting target for demons and Hellsworn. In other respects, I imagine him as a combination of "miracle worker" and "religious entertainer", to use the labels in the core rulebook.)

Thank you again for offering whatever help you can...

1:17 am - New Celestial "Group" (for lack of a better term)

isnorden
While discussing my campaign with [info]jkivela today, I wondered what might happen to celestials who decide to join "the third side", instead of serving Heaven or Hell. At first, I considered turning them into Ethereals outright...but much later, I was inspired. Juat like Falling and Redemption, "Defection" would create a different kind of celestial...

10:27 pm - How's this for a low-level NPC?

isnorden
Before I post his stats, you should know a few differences in my campaign:

  1. New PC celestials start with 10 forces each, to make the math easier and allow for more variety in stats. (9 Forces is still considered the lower limit for Fledging into a Choir, though!)

  2. Oannes is not dead, although he did take quite a beating in the War; he's available as an angelic Superior and still on good terms with Janus. (I'm using the version found here, incidentally.)

  3. I allow some cosmetic variations in celestial forms, depending on the Word that a character's Superior embodies. An Ofanite of the Waters? Well, what do you usually get when fire and water conflict...?) As long as the change isn't drastic enough to make one Choir look like another, any reasonable tweak is fine with me!

  4. Finally, I let angels use the variant Numinous Corpus Songs that a few fans have posted on the Web; the official versions seem too demonic for the good guys, most of the time.

And now...the stats! (It's a shame he couldn't get a few Skills improved and still stay Discord-free...*shrug*)

under what condition could an Artifact resist the entropy of a calabite?

4:23 pm - Calling all cybergamers!

isnorden
I'm running a moderately "heretical" (non-canonical) In Nomine campaign through online chat; it'll be set in Madison, Wisconsin. You don't have to live there in real life to play...but familiarity with the area does help! I'll be posting a list of the biggest changes on my (forthcoming) Web site, but for now here are some ground rules:

  1. This is a good-guy campaign; any demon PCs must be honestly looking for Redemption (please run your backstory by me first).

  2. Besides celestials, I allow human PCs of most kinds--Soldiers for each of the three main sides, sorcerers, and mundanes. (Yes, I said "three sides"; in my campaign, the Ethereals are mostly neutral to the conflict between Heaven and Hell.) No Undead characters, please!

  3. The general tone of the campaign is light-hearted, with more emphasis on humor and otherworldly politics than on combat: though there will be some fighting, it's no hack-and-slash!

  4. Some rules for celestials and their Superiors are tweaked; in particular, a Superior who's canonically alive/dead might be the opposite in this campaign. A few of them have different Words as well. If you've got any questions about your favorite Superior's status, feel free to ask me first!

11:55 pm - In Nomine Deorum, anyone? ;-)

isnorden
After reading some of the IN material long ago, I toyed with using the system for a pagan campaign--an Ethereal-centered storyline in which the Purification Crusade never happened. The greatest threat to the old gods is not a direct attack by Heaven or Hell, but human disbelief: Soldiers of God insist that any otherworldly being which doesn't come from Heaven must come from Hell. The Hellsworn dismiss pagan gods and creatures as "fairy tales", giving their dark master more credit than he deserves whenever something supernatural happens. As for the angels and (true) demons themselves, they're usually too busy fighting each other to deal with the spiritual "third world"; however, one of them might lead an occasional skirmish against the old gods, determined to prove their side right.

Obviously, in an "In Nomine Deorum" setting, other pantheons are mostly intact and able to intervene on earth (although less dramatically than the God of Abraham would). All that's missing is a rule for determining when Ethereals intervene on those d666 rolls...

NOTE: The play-by-chat game I'm planning to run will NOT follow these variant rules; it'll be standard (canon) IN with a few house rules added and a light-hearted tone. I'm just throwing the IND variant out there as a hypothetical setting, the way "In Nomine Purgationis" has been.

I know that one of them will need to be the Game Master's Guide; which other two would you recommend as being important to someone who'll be running a campaign online? (I'm assuming that those PDF files from the official site cost as much as a typical paperback rulebook.)

3:36 pm - NPC help, part 2--more mechanics questions

isnorden
Please forgive my ignorance, since my collection of IN books is limited to the core rules and a few Player Guides...but I have a few more questions before designing the NPC mentioned in my last post. (I hope to at least get the GM's rulebook as soon as I can have a friend order it next month, but I digress!) In particular:

  1. What are the most important rules for a servitor "on loan to" another Superior? The more I think about Ursula's background, the more a Flowers/Children combination is starting to make sense for her. (There are even a few suitable locations in my hometown to serve as Tethers to each Superior: Madison's got a pretty well-known botanical garden in one part of town, and a children's museum close to the heart of downtown. Apart from actual Tethers, I imagine a Novalite favoring a couple of the older downtown churches with gardens in back.)

  2. What are the most important rules for powers earned from an allied Superior? As I mentioned in my last post, Ursula's Word probably attracted interest from both Eli and Blandine; being able to imbue her handmade bears with low-level Songs makes sense, and so does granting happy dreams to a child who sleeps with one.

  3. How many "hometown campaigners" invent minor locations as new character hangouts? The way shops tend to change owners quickly in downtown Madison, I imagine Ursula's latest vessel owning a small gift shop: flowers, cards, and her trademark hand-sewn bears would be the main items for sale. (Suddenly, "Nothing But Flowers" looks viable as an attunement she can use: imagine her spying on a suspicious-looking customer by blending into the merchandise! Her new Word would also allow Ursula and her servitors the same benefit when hiding among stuffed animals, though... :-) )

Thank you again to everyone who answered my last post; having experienced IN players around really helps me get a feeel for the game!

11:51 pm - NPC help needed

isnorden

*rolls up to the keyboard and delurks* Ahem...

I'm fairly new to In Nomine, having seen only the very basic rulebooks. (They're all I could get hold of so far--no bank account means no ordering online!) In any case, I'm thinking of starting a light-hearted campaign set in my hometown, and want to include a Word-bound NPC who shares one of my hobbies: imagine a card/gift shop run by the Angel of Teddy Bears! <big grin> I've given her a name (Ursula), a primary Role (salesperson), and a roughly estimated power level. (She obviously shouldn't measure up to the big-name Superiors--but being Word-bound and able to grant her own Rites, Ursula should rank above an average starting PC; I'm guessing 12-14 Forces.) Now for the parts I'd need to flesh out:

  1. Which Choir sounds most appropriate for an angel with her Word? I'm torn between Cherub and Mercurian; Ursula would be friendly and outgoing towards people in general, but also strongly interested in protecting and comforting children. (I see her celestial form as a largish teddy bear with working wings--picture an oversized version of those Beanie Babies that come out at Christmastime.)

  2. Which of the "official" superiors would she answer to? I can easily see ties with Christopher (kids and teddy bears go a long way back), but also with Blandine (teddy bears comfort sleeping children and protect from nightmares).

  3. Which Songs would an angel with her background and interests be likely to know? Probably, she'd know just enough offensive stuff to help mall security--but focus more on peaceful, comforting powers.

  4. Which Skills (other than her Role-related ones) would be appropriate, given her background?

  5. Finally, I need to round out her Rites and Distinctions: I can see her followers recovering Essence by repairing a child's favorite bear or donating several of them to charity, but can anyone here improve on that?

I'd appreciate any help that I can get from more experienced folks here. Thanks so much!

1:30 pm - Canon for...

maroon_ed
Writing this for my MHC page, and wondering what you all think? I've tried to stay to canon as far as I can offhand, but slanted slightly in the ethereal direction since that is what I'm doing with the PbP that it supports. (Come to think of it, I've omitted the parts where the Hindu and Santerian pantheons allied with the angels...)

Critiques? This is partly done--the rest will relate what's here to the events in game.

Spoilery parts white-texted and under cut--and at bottom of page. If page does not come up with white background, beware. Well, except for Methariel. You may want to avoid the last section under the break as well.

Indeed, scientists now say the planet itself is generating a constant, deep thrum of noise. No mere cacophony, but actually a kind of music, huge, swirling loops of sound, a song so strange you can't really fathom it, so low it can't be heard by human ears, chthonic roars churning from the very water and wind and rock themselves, countless notes of varying vibration creating all sorts of curious tonal phrases that bounce around the mountains and spin over the oceans and penetrate the tectonic plates and gurgle in the magma and careen off the clouds and smack into trees and bounce off your ribcage and spin over the surface of the planet in strange circular loops, "like dozens of lazy hurricanes," as one writer put it."

It's lovely.
