Holy wars [11 Oct 2005|01:35pm]

dpolicar
I wonder if Paris regrets his choice.

Does he, bleeding into Trojan sand,
remember Helen's hair and face, and smile?

Or, when her husband's armies charge his walls,
does he think "Could I do it all again
I'd pick Athena, lead my father's troops,
show Hector and Achilles who was boss,
taste Troy triumphant! Sweep across my foes,
bring Trojan rule onto the Grecian shores,
take Helen as my wife by right of sword,
and more besides! Paris the Great, I'd be,
and all would cheer my name."? Or does he pray
"Great Hera, Thou art wiser than I knew,
Thy offer I was foolish to refuse."?

Of course, it never even crossed his mind
to leave the golden apple there to rot,
prevail upon the petty princesses
to rule with generosity and love,
give over childish pique, and show true strength.

Let's not forget, when listing Paris' sins,
the real truth: in war, Eris always wins.

Hola, I'm New! [23 Apr 2005|02:09pm]

Hello, my name is Allegra and I'm new here! I love Greek mythology, and the Trojan War is one of my favorite stories. I just read The Iliad a few weeks ago and am currently reading The Odyssey. My favorite character is Hector, because he's so brave, noble, selfless, and kind. Well, I could get into an in-depth character analysis right now, but I don't think I will...lol, I could on forever on one subject you know, I'm very talkative ;) I also liked the movie 'Troy' okay, although there were some things that ticked me off, like Menelaus dying (what was with that?!)

Anyways, just so you know a little more about me, I'm a Christian and I love to read, write, draw and hang out with my friends. Some of my favorite things are: books (especially Classic literature), art, strawberry shortcake, Shakespeare, poetry, peanut butter (lol), quotes, horses (although I love all animals), wildlife, mythology, and movies. I'm also a bit of a tomboy and I love sports. Oh yeah, and did I mention I'm very talkative? Well, I hope to be seeing you guys around!

Would it be at all possible for someone to explain the Trojan War to me?

For some reason, we never learned about it in school, yet sixth graders are this year.

And i loved the movie Troy,
probably because i know nothing about the true story?

That'd be great of someone to help me out here.

There's a Troy radio-play coming up on BBC7, which I thought some of you might be interested in. I haven't any idea what it'll be like; this is the only info the site gives:

Troy

Sun 8 Aug, 13:00 - 14:30 (GMT) 90 mins

This enticing adaptation of Homer's poem follows the epic adventures of Paris and Hector, sons of Priam, King of Troy. [Rptd Monday, 2.00am]

You can listen again for up to a week if you can't catch it live.

Song of Troy RPG [22 Jun 2004|11:11pm]

The [info]song_of_troy RPG needs players (again)!

Namely, Hector, Creusa and Poseidon, although a full list of available characters can be found on the community's info page.

Song of Troy RPG

Around 1200 B.C., more than a thousand ships of Greeks from every corner of the Mediterranean Sea gathered at the port of Aulis to confer and wage war against the city of Troy. At the forefront of this attack were Menelaus, king of Sparta, his brother, Agamemnon, king of Mycenae and Argos, and Odysseus, king of Ithaca. All for the most beautiful woman in the world, Helen of Sparta (soon to be Helen of Troy) who had been "stolen away" by Paris, a Trojan prince. This is the story of the Trojan War, the fight for Helen between the Royal House of Troy and the forces of Greece. This is the Song of Troy.

This community is an active RPG built around the events of Homer's Iliad, as well as Book 2-3 of Virgil's Aeneid, and Greek dramas. Because we don't want this thing to end too quickly, the RPG will begin two years before the war, and end with the death of Agamemmnon.

[As taken from our community userinfo page]

Everything else you need to know about the RPG can be found in the aforementioned community userinfo page- such as the RULES-, but please feel free to contact either one of the moderators, Andrea (firedancer4usa@aol.com), ciorstan (ciorstan@comcast.net) or Klose (cathartic_klose@hotmail.com).

As I feared, there is some truly godawful fanfiction out there based not on the actual mythology surrounding Troy, but on the movie. I therefore made this (also because I don't feel like studying for finals)

Something that I've been wondering... [18 May 2004|11:50pm]

[ mood | thoughtful ]

I will admit that I do not pay the most attention to details when I read epics, so I missed a lot of stuff that others apparently caught. So I was wondering if people who know things could post here regarding the physical descriptions of the major Trojan War people, or whoever comes to your mind. Like... young or old, attractive or plain, what color hair and such... It would be muchly appreciated. If you could tell me the source too (just the name would work, like Euripides, Homer, etc) that would be most excellent.

Thanks very much, and I'm sorry that I can't find this out so easily on my own. X_x

I know that I commented on a lot of threads linking it, but I figured it'd be easier to just post my own review as a post here. I'll also be posting it in Greek_Mythology, so sorry if that's redundant. X_X

Anyway, here's my review of Troy... it's four pages long, just warning ya. :D

Troy Review [16 May 2004|11:00pm]

TROY Review

Troy is perhaps one of the worst films I’ve seen in a long time. I never thought I’d say this, but the Helen of Troy miniseries was actually better and more accurate. The acting, editing, script (and not to mention direction) in Troy were generally awful. As a huge Classics buff, I expected to only be upset by the disgusting number of canon changes. I was wrong.

SCRIPT )</strong></o:p>

DIRECTION )
 </o:p>

CAST )

COSTUME AND ART DIRECTION )</strong>
</o:p>

AND TO SUM THINGS UP…

There are films that are enjoyable to watch, films that are insanely boring, and films that are so bad that they’re fun to watch. In general, on an absolute value scale of -10 to 10, I would give this film a -7. It’s like watching a train wreck: you watch in fascinated revulsion. There are elements of the film that could be better in every department, and improvement in any of these categories would have grossly improved the film.

Is it a film worth seeing? Yes, but not in the theaters (or buy a ticket to a different film and sneak in).

Wait until it comes out on video or DVD.

x-posted to several communities. I apologize to your Friends pages.
