Homemade Knitting Needles x-posted to ghstlght74, craft_working, knitting_knerdsOkay, my friend mamma_fire_bear originally came up with the idea, so all credit goes to her. I know that she'll be making her own set sometime near the end of the month, but since I had the time now I went ahead and ran with it. I made my own set of knitting needles. All they cost was a mere $1.50 to buy a set of prepackaged, precut bunch of wooden dowels of varying sizes. Then through the magic of a pencil sharpener I was able to get a point on the three smaller sizes. Then found some wooden beads to place on the ends. I had some left over combination stain/polyurethane that I then painted them with after a bit of sanding to smooth 'em out. Then viola!!! My own set of knitting needles. The three sizes are a set of 9s, 10.5s, and 11s. I'm pretty happy with myself. Now to get ready for my first project with the 9s, my very own Dr. Who Scarf. I am such a geek. :oD |

Knitting Needles On Ebay *Cross posted like a mofo* Hey all I'm selling these 2 sets of needles on ebay. If this kind of post isn't allowed then feel free to delete it. I just wanted to get the word out about my needle sets. They're vintage needles from my grandmother and are in pretty good shape with very minimal damage to any of them. Some of them do have a little bit of tarnishing on the cap parts but not a lot. Thanks guys!

hand made buttons does anyone know how to make buttons out of yarn? my great grandma once showed me. she wrapped yarn around the handle of a knife, removed the tightly wound yarn and then wrapped it all the way around. i cant quite figure it out now though, she showed me ten years ago and she has since passed. thanks for any help you can offer! cross posted to la_knitters |

ghetto knitting blog Hi guys, I've been a member of this community for a while, but I don't think i've posted before. It's a great idea for a community, seeing as I have been knitting for a long time (since i was 6) but pretty much still knit squares/rectangles (anything else is just too much work/concentration for me). I guess I like knitting as therapy or to have something to occupy my hands while i read, watch tv etc, and don't want something so complicated i have to think about it. Right now i'm mostly making squares for afghans to be assembled by people in homespunhelpers and a yarn store in BlacksburgMost knitting blogs are about people who are totally nuts about knitting, knit all the time and knit fancy stuff. I was wondering if i started a "ghetto" knitting blog, whether people would read it. I'm not sure if i actually will do it, but if i do, it could be on blogspot (or some other blog hosting site), or even on livejournal (since most of the community i interact with are on livejournal anyway. This would be a blog by a person who knits simple patterns and likes using affordable (i dont want to say cheap :) yarn, and thinks it's weird to knit in public And to make this post more interesting, here are some knitting pictures!! I tend to create little summer projects for myself every summer. Last summer I got my massage therapist license at a community college and the summer before the daunting task of a sweater (which I ended up finishing before the start of my senior year, September 2005). Well this summer I decided that I was going to be the best fraturnity sweetheart ever and knit my boyfriend's fraturnity a blanket that they could hang up in the window of their house, use on their couch, or hang up on the wall of their house (which will be a brand new house by August of this year. I'm just having alittle bit of an issue of a pattern to pick or a design to use. I definatly want to use it in the fraturnity colors (purple, green, gold), I'm at the point of indecisive-ness (not a real word but it fits!) on whether or not that I want to use the crest ( http://www.lambdachi.org). I definatly want the letters on the afghan. Any help is greatly appriecated. Ive looked online at greek stores that specilize in making blankets and the details are soo intrecet. And I have untill August to finish it. Pattern suggestions are greatly appriecated. Thanks so much in advance!! x-posted: alot of places! Yarn for sale Hello everyone. I've been knitting since 1998/99 but lately I've been heading towards other hobbies, leaving me with a ton of yarn I've collected that I won't be using and a lack of money for my other hobbies. Some of it is new and still in the hank/skein, some is years old, some has just been wound and some has been used and rewound. There's acrylic, wool, silk, and some I don't know anymore. I also have a needle lot thats up for grabs, as well as a knitting machine and a basket. I'm in my last year of college and I don't want to lug all this stuff with me when I move. Anything that isn't taken by January 16th (when I'm done with my winter break) will probably just be tossed. I also have a cat so anyone with a cat allergy might want to be careful. I'll ship to anywhere in the US, but keep in mind if SE Minnesota decides to see snow at all before the 16th, it might take me a while to get it out. If anyone in the Winona/Rochester area wants anything, I'm fine with meeting up. Depending on time, I mgiht be able to travel further. Everything is Best Offer. I don't care if you want single skeins (in cases where there's multiple) or everything. I'm cheap. If you have any questions or if you want something, either leave a comment here or email me at rainbowjoule(at)hotmail(do)com. First one to ask gets it. I take PayPal mainly, cash or check works too if you are in my area and I give it to you personally.( Away we go... )Cross-posted |

Hello! I consider myself to be a beginning knitter. I learned to *knit* (as in strictly garter stitch) about 2 years ago, and made myself a scarf using recycled sari silk, which turned out much better than I thought it would. Out of sheer jealousy over the beautiful projects I would see on my friends list, I picked the needles back up recently and figured out purling and binding off, and made myself a pouch from some random Noro Kureyon I had on hand to practice my technique. I think my next project is going to be Zeeby's Bag from Stitch 'N Bitch - it looks pretty straighforward, although I might felt it just a little bit for added stability. I do have a question to justify my post - is Knit Pick's Wool of the Andes truly comparable to Lamb's Pride Worsted? How does it felt? I think Lamb's Pride is great, but it's $6.70/skein at my LYS and while I love to support them I'd like to find a less expensive option for a trial run on the bag. Thank you! |

Simple, basic, plain sock patterns? So this summer I made my first sock. I have lots of sock yarn accumulated over the years, and I'd like to make some socks with it. Does anyone have a really simple pattern for socks? When I say simple, I mean both easy and boring. I don't want lacy socks or patterned socks or anything but plain, boring socks. These patterns have been ridiculously hard for me to find.
