toe-up upside-down Monkeys [22 May 2008|11:41pm]

lanewayne
[ music | The Ting Tings ]

pattern: "Monkey" from knitty.com
yarn: Regia 4-fadig color in 5030, basically blue, white, and light brown - 2 skeins
needles: 0, 1, 1.5 circs - Magic Loop all the way!

The motifs are upside-down because I didn't bother to adjust the stitch pattern chart for toe-up knitting.

The toes and heels were done on size 0 needles.

The foot and most of the leg were done on size 1 needles.

The top of the leg and the cuffs were done on size 1.5 needles.

Also, for each cuff, I gradually added 8 stitches so that it would fit over my meaty calves.

The colourway is pretty blah to me, but I enjoyed making these socks and I love wearing them around the house. I'm so making another pair in this pattern!

I'm working on a toe-up sock in Kaffe Fasset's "Mirage Storm". These socks are for Em.

Also, I'm trying to figure out what I can knit with 700 yards of teal Mission Falls 1824 Wool. I'm thinking of doing a vest, since I don't have enough for a pullover.

goals for this year [26 Jan 2008|11:35pm]

lanewayne
what I want to accomplish this year:

1. Number 1 WAS "no new yarn until Stitches West", but uhm, I know that ain't gonna happen!
2. go through over half of my sock yarn stash before the semester ends. So far, Em called dibs on the Claudia's Handpainted in "Teal Party", and I'm on the second sock made from Colinette Jitterbug in "Bright Charcoal". I think the next yarn I'll cast on will be something Regia.
3. make something out of the green Rowan Big Wool in my stash - hopefully that long-sleeved shrug in Fitted Knits.
4. make something out of the teal Mission Falls 1824 Wool in my stash - maybe a cardigan and a beanie for Dina.
5. a shawl for Rachel's wedding. I'm buying the yarn for this at SW.
6. a pair of teal socks for Brian's bff Sarah as a thank-you present for putting together our Costa Rica trip. Get this, she has size 5.75 feet! ROCK!

***
Oh boy, was I truly relieved that KP has new lengths for their fixed-length small diameter circs in 40-inches AND 47-inches. YES YES YES!

***
on my needles:

I'm zipping through these socks because they're 52 sts around, instead of the usual 60 sts. Yay for Colinette Jitterbug!

So, yeah, I've been dabbling with Magic Loop.

This is "Child's First Sock in Shell Pattern" from Knitting Vintage Socks by Nancy Bush.

Things I've learned from doing this project thus far:
1. I wrote in a previous entry: "2.50mm does NOT equal 2.25mm. Like duh." Well, the first set of needles I bought for this project was size 1 Addi Lace circs, which are 2.50mm. What I should have looked at was the metric size because the pattern calls for 2.25mm. HELLO! Well, I worked on the sock, blissfully ignorant of the huge difference, until I saw how stretchy it looked after a few repeats. Curious, I tried it on and the cuff fit comfortably around the fullest part of my calf. Yo, I got huge calves! Frog frog frog.

2. I prefer 40-inch circs for Magic Loop. As flexible as the purple cords are for the 32-inch Knit Picks circs, they were still too short for my liking.

3. For plain stockinette socks, dpns all the way. For socks with lace, Magic Loop all the way. Even though I'm not knitting any faster with Magic Loop, I like the uninterrupted flow it gives me.

two pairs of socks and a sock in progress [24 Nov 2007|03:55pm]

lanewayne
October 2007 -

yarn: Louet Gems fingering weight in 'teal' and 'charcoal', purchased at Purlescence Yarns in Sunnyvale
needles: size 0 dpns; size 7 needle for bind-off

After a few weeks of wear and a few washings, the socks are pilling really badly. :/ Other than that, I look forward to knitting another pair with this yarn. In my opinion, liking how the socks feel on my feet trumps pilling any day!

***
November 2007 -

yarn: Araucania Ranco Multy in '301' (a lovely mix of robin's egg blue, merlot, rust, and violet), purchased at Babetta's Yarn & Gifts in Fair Oaks
needles: size 0 dpns; size 7 needle for bind-off

While fiddling with the skein on the swift, I noticed that I had four ends to deal with, instead of two. Huh? So I randomly picked an end and attached it to the ball winder. What resulted was a small ball that weighed 20g. Then I wound off the rest of it. The bigger ball was 86g and had no knots. For some odd reason, I like how whoever skeined up the yarn just added on more yarn without using a knot.

By the way, the socks used up only 84g of yarn.

Rachel, thank you for pointing out this particular colourway while we were browsing Babetta's. <3

Attached to the toe is a cheapy Susan Bates row counter. It's tied on with a bit of scrap yarn so that I won't lose the dang thing. ;)

Amy sent me a package~!

Misti Alpaca laceweight, Maxime Print sock yarn, and Andes wool yarn. WHOA!

Wait, oops, missing from the picture is a fluffy ball of Bouton d'Or Zephyr superwash laceweight yarn.

Check out the other goodies. :)

Thank you, Amy! <3 You're awesome!

Pajama Jammy Jam sale @ Purlescence Yarns = the only sale I went to on Black Friday

I got to the store at 6:05 am, and the place was packed!

the booty -

1. row counter
2. Malabrigo in 'forest'
3. Lorna's Laces Shepherd Sock in 'Black Purl'
4. Claudia's Hand Painted fingering weight in 'Teal Party'
5. Socks That Rock in 'Lucy'
6. Colinette Jitterbug in 'Raphael'
7. Regia 4-fadig color in 5030

Other than placing an order for Christmas gift sock yarn online, I decided that I won't buy any new yarn until Stitches West in Feb 2008.

More sock talk -
1. 2.50mm does NOT equal 2.25mm. Like duh. (I'll elaborate later.)
2. I like using the cheapy Susan Bates row counters for socks.
3. I really like the base yarn used in Regia 4-fadig color and in Araucania Ranco. It's a 75/25 wool/nylon blend, and it has a nice twist.
4. I placed my very first KnitPicks order a few days ago. The order consisted of a 32-inch size 0 circ and a 32-inch size 1 (2.25mm) circ. Yep, I'm trying out Magic Loop for socks.
5. I'm not giving up on dpns. (I'll elaborate later.)

FO - Meilenweit Colortweed socks for Em~! [22 Sep 2007|06:26pm]

lanewayne
Em's Christmas present is done done done! Yay!

yarn: Meilenweit Colortweed in #1004
needles: size 0 for the sock, size 7 for the bind-off

notes:
Magic Cast-On for the toe
60 stitches around
short-row heels
2x1 ribbed cuffs

.the socks soaking in a pot in the sink.

I can never get over how the hardwater in my apartment just leeches out dye, especially blue dye.

a proper FO post for my Fiery Bolero [16 Sep 2007|11:03pm]

lanewayne
I had fun with the self-timer on my little camera earlier...

pattern: "Fiery Bolero" from IK, Summer 2005
yarn: Debbie Bliss "Cathay" in #05 (100m/109yd/50g), a little over 5 skeins
needles: size 4 for the body, size 2 for the ribbing
date started: June 19, 2007
date finished: August 18, 2007

notes:
-If it weren't for the fact that I bought this yarn on clearance at 40%-off, I never would have made this project in the first place!
-Laziness and boredom are the reasons this simple project took me so long to finish. And would I knit it again? Maybe.
-I say this took a little over 5 skeins because the little leftover balls plus the gauge swatch weighed 46g.

"one is the loneliest number that you'll ever do" [14 Sep 2007|01:44am]

lanewayne
I've been going through old journal entries, figuring out what projects to list in my Ravelry notebook, and I came across this sock from last year:

It's a loner, that poor sock. And the reason I never started on its mate? I hate the needles I used to make it --- Brittany 5-inch dpns. 5-inch needles are too short for me! So after seeing that picture, I decided that when I do buy a set of 6- or 7-inch dpns in US3, I will complete the pair.

A reminder: the yarn used for this sock is Cascade Fixation. It is a FUNKY cotton yarn due to the small amount of elastic in it.

Another reminder: I do have a pair of socks made from Fixation, and it's like wearing Ace bandages on my feet. They are too thick to wear under shoes, so I just wear them around the house.

Meilenweit Colortweed in #1004, Susan Bates size 0 needles, 60 sts, Magic Cast-On for the toe.

Self-striping sock yarn is my new weakness, and I prefer the precision of the machine-dyed stuff over the luscious Yarntini hand-dyed sportweight from last time. Why? There were white spots between colours in the "gimlet" colourway, but Trekking and Meilenweit both have smooth transitions between colours. I do admit this: If I were to ever come across another skein of Yarntini at Knitique in Elk Grove, oh heck yeah, I'd so buy it.

I do hate that the base yarn for both Trekking and Meilenweit is stringy, scratchy, and super-splitty. Ah, the 3 dreaded S's.

Speaking of stringy... Melody superwash sock yarn is, indeed, stringy, but the dense superwash coating covers up the potential scratchiness and splittiness. I like the fabric it made in shawl form, so I'm curious to see how it will knit up in sock form.

After seeing pics on several blogs, I added Regia's Kaffe Fasset line to my wishlist. The colour combos for that particular line are sooo friggen cool.

By the way, the Meilenweit socks are for Em. They're supposed to be her Christmas present.

***
Current running tally of FOs, since August:
1. Hedera socks for Em
2. gimlet socks for Em
3. "half-square triangular shawl" for moi
4. Mandy's Candy Bag for a swap package
5. Fiery Bolero for moi
6. Fire on the Mountain socks for Em moi

Hey, didn't I say that I'd go yarn-shopping after 5 completed objects? Let's see if I can hold off yarn-shopping for myself after another couple of FOs.

So, the current sock on needles is my school knitting and my mindless knitting---okay, that's one project. What's the second? A Lace Leaf Shawl being done on size 4 needles and from green Zephyr.

I really loved doing the Lace Leaf Shawl out of Koigu for Rachel, so it's about time I made one for myself. I chose laceweight yarn for me because that's what's in the stash. Zephyr = shiny + yummy.

done done done!! [24 Aug 2007|12:57am]

lanewayne
Thanks to four hours of hanging out in the SJSU library, I finished the leg of the sock, minus the ribbed cuff. When I got home, I knitted up the cuff and bound off as I watched an ep of Ramsay's Kitchen Nightmares Revisited on TiVo.

The "Fire on the Mountain" socks are now drying...

These were originally for Em, but I decided to keep them for myself! Besides, I think Em would have been weirded out by the Grateful Dead-inspired colour scheme.

I wonder what my next project will be. Maybe it's time to test out the Claudia Handpaints fingering weight yarn in "Sharks" that's been in my stash since February. Ooo!

it's not really striping --- it's just as cool.... [22 Aug 2007|02:03pm]

lanewayne
I like how the yarn behaves in this finished sock, meaning, I'm not getting any odd jagged effects.

And it behaves on the leg as well because I kept it the same stitch count.

For the cuff, I went up to size 1 needles, did a round where I increased from 52 to 56, then I did twisted 1x1 ribbing for ten rounds.

So far, the yarn is also behaving in the second sock. :)
