Modpost: How to access #gardenofmaidens
... Take two.

Okay, for those of you who already use IRC, know how it works etc, it's the following room on the following server:

/server irc.zirc.org

then

/join #gardenofmaidens

If you're in a Rosa family, feel free to have a Rosa nickname if you like~. IRC doesn't like spaces in nicknames, so usually the underscore is used. So instead of "Rosa Foetida en Bouton" it'd be "Rosa_Foetida_en_Bouton". There's a limit of I think thirty characters in a nickname, but I'm sure none of us will be hitting that at all~

Zirc has a website which allows you to access the Zirc network direct from the website, without the need to download/install/etc anything new.

Go to http://www.zirc.org/chat and you will be presented with this screen.

Enter in your desired nickname and the room you want to go to - #gardenofmaidens - like so...

Lo! You're in. Hello there.

There's also Java, but I couldn't get it to work to be honest. It's there if you can make it work, in any case.

If you have mIRC or a downloaded IRC client, getting to #gardenofmaidens will probably be more like this...

This is likely the sort of screen you'll see when starting up IRC. Yes mIRC has a 30-day limit but as far as I know (see, I haven't reached the limit yet~) the program doesn't stop working once it hits said limit, it'll just bug you to pay for it at that point. Well, fine.

Put in your name, email, nickname and alternative nickname; you don't have to put in your real name or email address or even any at all if you really don't want to though, to my knowledge. The nickname is what you will be known as when on the network, and the alternative is for if the servers blip and you get disconnected and reconnected very quickly. Don't worry, you can get your old nick back once the servers have realised what's going on, usually a minute or two later. Don't worry about it if you don't know what I'm on about, in any case.

The bottom textbox is where you put everything in; at the moment you'll be at a blank status box. Put in /server irc.zirc.org to the box, as show in the picture above. Ignore the red text, it's just because I have a script installed, your box will just be blank.

Once you connect to the server, you'll get several hundred lines of rapidly scrolling text. Read it if you like, but it's usually just server information, quotes the server admins like, rules on the server (basically, "don't be a moron") and stuff like this.

Unless you've turned it off (like me), a box like this will pop up. As a default it'll have a whole bunch of IRC chatrooms you might (but most likely won't) be interested in having a look at. I've since deleted all of those since, y'know, I'm not interested in them. Enter in #gardenofmaidens like the picture shows, and press 'join'. If you press 'add' it'll take you to a screen where you can add #gardenofmaidens to that channel list there.

Or, you can just type in /join #gardenofmaidens if you, like me, have switched the popup box off. Whichever you like.

Anyway, once you've done that, hurrah; you're in. Welcome!

You might be interested in some of the basic IRC commands, too.

- The /me command

/me eats cheese

This is the /me command. Typing this into the textbox will come out with, for example:

* Rosa_Foetida_en_Bouton eats cheese

- Changing your nickname

Maybe you don't like the nickname you've chosen. Okay, it's possible to change it:

/nick Rosa_Chinesis_en_Bouton

This will result in

* Rosa_Foetida_en_Bouton is now known as Rosa_Chinesis_en_Bouton

- Registering a nickname

You don't really need to worry about this, but just in case you'd like to register a nickname to mark it as being yours, do the following:

/msg nickserv Register ufufufu thisismy@email.com

This would register your nickname with the password ufufufu to the person at thisismy@email.com. IRC will ask you to identify yourself on connection after this, to which you type

/msg nickserv identify ufufufu

And it'll know who you are. Names will lose their registered status if you don't use (or identify, I think) them for thirty days.

- Slap!

If you right-click on someone's name in the sidebar, an option entitled 'slap!' is shown. Clicking on this will result in you slapping the person you clicked to slap.

* Rosa_Chinesis_en_Bouton slaps Rosa_Foetida_en_Bouton around a bit with a large trout

Don't abuse this.

- MP3 scripts

... Or obnoxious MP3 scripts, either. It's okay to let everybody know what you're listening to, such as:

* Rosa_Chinesis_en_Bouton is listening to [Maria-sama Ga Miteru - Pastel Pure] at 128kbps | 4870kb | 04.10

Sure, fine.

* Rosa_Foetida_en_Bouton OMGSUPERMP3*SCRIPT I am dancing happily to [Maria-sama Ga Miteru - Pastel Pure] | {128kbps} | {4870kb} | {04.10} | THIS MP3 IS NUMBER 3750 IN MY COLLECTION OF 12590 | Type !I LOVE EATING CHEESE if you'd like to get this file from me! | PREVIOUS FILE: Tatu - Show Me Love | UPCOMING FILE: Darren Hayes - Heart Attack | Type !LOOKICANTYPE if you want to see a list of my entire MP3 collection! | I am using Windows XP right now | This is version 0.571 of the OMGSUPERMP3*SCRIPT and I downloaded it from www.omgsupermp3script.com! | This script was made by Uberl33t and Notsol33t | Your mother was a hamster and your father smelt of elderberries!

Will cause me to to go on a homicidal rampage (or at least go "OMG OBNOXIOUS MP3 SCRIPT" at you). It's nothing personal, I just can't see how anybody wouldn't find these chat-flooding eyesores irritating...

Anyway, basically... that's as much as I can think of. If you have any more questions, feel free to ask~... hopefully that's about it? Anyway, I look forward to being able to meet everybody and for us to be able to chat together in this way~~
