| | hopeful | ] | Every year my school has an event called "Tunnel of Oppression", which, though the name is kinda creepy, actually a very cool and powerful event. It consists of a series of short (30 seconds or so) skits about various forms of oppression. These are used to educate students about the hardships some people face that they don't even think about. Some examples are able-ism, racism, classism, body image, homophobia, religious intolerance and (this year) trans-phobia. I've been assigned to write the transphobia skit this year. It's going to be about the fact that people who don't present their gender in an "acceptable" way can get fired from their jobs, just like that.
I have a basic idea of what to write, but I thought it'd be a good idea to see if I could hear about real people's experiences, as I've been fortunate enough to not have it happen to me.
I appreciate any help that can be given, and thank you in advance.
A.

| Nipple Peircings |
[Oct. 12th, 2008|04:35 pm] |
Nipple Peircing Question: Now, I was reading in the memories a mixed review on pre-op nipple peircings. Its come down to the point where Friday is the day I either get them peirced, or I don't. I've wanted to do them for awhile, but however haven't got the guts to do it alone...I have to have someone who is stronger then me go because I have a tendency to want to just put the needle thru myself if they don't do it quickly...which most peircers won't, luckily its a friend of mine (who is licensed, and also a drag queen and gay boy so doesn't make me feel weird getting in front of a random stranger). I haven't had top surgery yet, and don't plan to anytime soon seeing it costs too much, and I am living off the money I had saved up while looking for a job, because of being laid off last month. I am only having to pay $30 instead of the $50-70 for both. I know that the nipple grafts will be getting done, because my aerola (sp?) is big, because I have D-DD chest. A friend of mine recommended wearing a tight sports bra when she had hers done, which I think sounds right, to avoid it getting caught on anything. So would wearing a tight sports bra instead of binding, just have the same effect as if a women were to get her nipples peirced?? and then eventually once healed, being able to wear a binder (we have already tested that you can wear a binder w/ nipple peircings and it still works, once healed, seeing my friend Jess uses a binder for drag shows and has the same size chest) . Now I am thinking it will be at least 3-5years, if not more, til I have chest surgery. So once scheduling, it will be approx 3-6 months in advance, I will then remove them (when scheduling it in advance).
Now with that all said, would there be any issues do you think that I may come into if getting them peirced friday night? Or with the tight sports bras idea? Or with surgery in the future? Please feel free to voice your opinions on this subject. |

| T |
[Jan. 2nd, 2001|01:39 pm] |
Hey guys!
Happy thanksgiving to those who are celebrating!
I have a concern and I was wondering if I could get some advice?
I started "T" in july of this year and I just reached the 3m mark! However I missed two weeks of my dosage right before the 3m period...this wasn't intentional! I was wondering how far back this has sent me?
I'm concerned with the changes....I have facial hair around my chin an neck and I like it but i'm pissed b/c I don't won't to be read as female with hair! I'm actually having a really hard time. I do shave but it still shows abit! I get a lot of looks on the street and my interaction with ppl have not been very good!
I'm trying to hang in there but it's tough....i'm looking for work and I still can't find a job! I might just have to see about going on disability for the time being!
The changes I've been experiencing hasn't been much...My jaw may be squared off a bit but I still look female! I'm worried that this isn't going to work for me!
Any advice? |

Greetings! A post of trappd_inside gave me a nudge - if I disquieted the honourable audience with my fears and doubts about top surgery earlier, I should give a report about it now. ( 2 be continued under cut ) |

| DC/VA Area Haircuts (Slightly OT) |
[Oct. 11th, 2008|07:08 am] |
If anyone's short on cash or just awkward at hair salons and in need of a haircut in the next couple of weeks there's an event going on that could be useful.
The Graham Webb Academy in Arlington, VA is having a Cut-A-Thon to raise money for the cancer ward of an English Children's hospital. On October 22nd they're giving a haircut to anyone who makes a donation. Any donation people can afford, they're not picky. The people doing your hair will either be senior students (all done with school exams, just working on hours before taking the state boards), licensed staff members, or one of our guest artists (some of whom do hair for things like Milan Fashion Week).
I actually attend Graham Webb and can say from first-hand experience that they're amazingly sensitive about trans issues. Pronouns can't be guaranteed the first time, but no one blinks if you correct them. I'm a transguy who just started, they graduated a group of transwomen just before I came in, and all the bathrooms are gender neutral save for one. It's also a ridiculously good school so you'll be getting a great cut at whatever price you can afford.
In the interest of full disclosure, I did just find out that the person who makes the most referrals does get an expensive set of cutting shears, but I don't expect anyone to remember my name so I'm not too bothered. I just think it's a good place doing something for a good cause so why not take advantage of it. Plus I know how it is going into salons/barber shops when you're just coming out or don't pass yet.
If anyone wants more info there's a Facebook event page here and if you just want to know about the school the web site is here.

| Missing work/medical leave after top surgery? |
[Oct. 10th, 2008|09:21 am] |
I plan on eventually getting top surgery... I was wondering, how much time have you guys had to miss from work in order to heal up afterwards? Did you have to take medical leave, or anything like that? How did you handle it? |

| Tattoos + Top Surgery...? |
[Oct. 9th, 2008|11:04 pm] |
So I'm turning 18 soon, and planning on getting a tattoo on my chest, more or less between my collarbone and nipple, etc. However, I also want to get top surgery eventually, probably in four or five years. Does anyone knows if chest surgery screws up tattoos in that area? I'm assuming it would, but I want a couple extra voices. If it does, I'll just put off the tattoo for a while, it's not a huge deal.
Thanks.

| | accomplished | ] | Just have a small success to share with people who would understand.
I've been on T 8 months now, and have not been able to do my shot on my own at all ever. I'm pretty scared of needles. It takes major guts for me to just stand still and let someone else do it for me.
Well, I just did my first shot on my own! Completely 100% start to finish by myself. No one else even in my house. I'm feeling pretty pleased with myself. As always, it was not nearly as bad as my wild imagination had me convinced it would be.
Just had to share. |

| Loss of Sensation post-top |
[Oct. 9th, 2008|08:27 am] |
Hey guys, I just wanted to throw out this piece of my surgery experience because I felt that I wasn't very well-informed before my own. We talk a lot about loss of nipple sensation, but no one talks much about loss of chest sensation. Personally, I not only do not have nipple sensation, 10 months post-op I have no sensation in a large part of my chest (about the size of a handprint on either side); I can't feel a piece of ice on that area or light touch at all.
Anyway, since I am less than a year post-op, please chime in if you had this experience and it went away, but otherwise I just share that this is a real possibility, or at least it was for me. |

| Primary Doctors pre-passing. |
[Oct. 8th, 2008|11:16 pm] |
I've read through the tags and haven't found exactly what I'm looking for.
I'm trying to find a good GP for non trans stuff. I haven't been to a doctor (aside from the t-prescribing endo) in at least three to four years; don't have a family doc in this city. Starting fresh. I've only been on T for three weeks, don't pass (yes, I realize the inherent flaws of using this word, but for the sake of brevity..), haven't had anything legally changed. So, what do I do? Make the appointment with new name, make a notation on paperwork of legal name? Other way around? What do I put in the sex box on the intake paperwork? If my insurance has trans as a named exclusion, can using new name/identity potentially get back to insurance provider and potentially mess up my claim for even this non trans issue appointment? It's nothing but a tangle of questions in my head.
I'm consulting my local trans community to hopefully get some recommendations for trans friendly doctors in the area--but barring good advice from them, what strategies have you all used to find a trans friendly primary doc?
Thanks for any advice given! |

My therapist is writing my letter for T. : ) Once he faxes it to the endocrinologist I can setup my first appointment. When you guys started did you get your first shot at the first visit? i was thinking that he would need to run blood tests and stuff. And then have me come back for the results and my shot. Just a hunch on my part. Hope everyone is having a good week. |

[Oct. 8th, 2008|11:02 am] |
Maybe a odd question, but did any ones bones start clicking on T? Googling says that there is nothing to worry about clicking bones, but, it's just they never clicked before, even if I wanted to make them click, but now every joint in my body is clicking quite regulary. Its unnerving. |

| Binding part 2 |
[Oct. 7th, 2008|10:29 pm] |
| [ | mood |
| | contemplative | ] | So I got my first binder in the mail today. THANK YOU to everyone who gave me advice about what size to go for...well I went for an XS. I am 5'5 127lbs and I'm a 34A. I almost dislocated my shoulder trying to get it on and when I realized it was easier to put it on as if it were a skirt, it was finally on. Fit perfect...My chest was a nicely flat. Look like pecs. I finally feel whole.
My dilema...my chest feels fine, but the skin on my back keeps bugging and the skin under my armpits somewhat goes over the binder. As well that the binder kinda goes into my stomach making it a little uncomfortable in that region...as well that sometimes it starts to roll up and crease into my skin which is really uncomfortable. I can breath and it feels fine except for the skin in my back and under my pitts.
Did I get the binder too small? Is there a big difference between xsmall and small? I like how my chest looks but the arm pit part is getting uncomfortable. not too mention the binder gets in between my stomach when I sit |
