 | 03:31 pm - Let's Trap Mayor Tooley and Relocate Her! Everglades Earth First! Statement to the Broward County Commission, Oct. 7th 2008
On September 25th, 2008, the Coconut Creek City Commission unanimously decided that 40 acres of pristine rockland tropical hardwood hammocks on the NW corner of Atlantic Blvd. & Lyons Rd. will be zoned for a Lowe's hardware store and shopping complex, also known as "Cocomar Plaza". This development stretches into Margate past the canal, where a Kohl's store and shopping complex is proposed to be built.
Not only would this proposed rezoning be an affront to the few remaining wild spaces left in Broward County, but it would also be killing large numbers of endangered animals, native South Florida plants, and possibly be building over pre-historic human remains, of which several nearby have been uncoverd by Broward County archaeologists. Other concerns expressed by community residents include: increased noise, light pollution, crime, urban sprawl, flooding, and increased carbon emissions. This proposed zoning is also seen as unnecessary since there are half a dozen Lowe's or Kohl's within several miles of the proposed site, with the nearest Lowe's being 3 miles away.
These concerns were made obvious to the commissioners and other residents of South Florida through public protests, interviews with media, and compelling speeches made at each commission meeting. The efforts were many and inspiring to see, yet Coconut Creek Mayor Becky Tooley and her commissioner croneys showed who they really worked for by bowing to the wishes of the greedy profit-driven corporations. They simply told us that the land was zoned for commercial development years ago. They said "you should have been there. Too bad if you weren't!"
Well, Mayor Tool, I mean Tooley, sometimes people have busy lives and do not have these ideas brought to their attention. Even if they did, the point is that the people who have elected this commission want this land to be preserved, and this commission was elected to serve the people of the community, not corporations represented by folks like Dennis Mele.
This has all transpired against the concerns of the residents of the surrounding area, with 100% of those attending the City Commission meetings (excluding developers) opposing development by a show of hands. It was these concerned residents that Everglades Earth First! took note of when first getting involved in July of this year. It was these concerned residents that evoked such passion for their community, their kids, and their natural environment. It was these concerned residents that packed the Planning and Zoning and City Commission meetings, organized petitions and public rallies, and showed that they knew quite a bit about why we need to save what's left of our wild spaces.
It is time that the commission acts like it works for the community, and finds a way to reverse the commercial zoning of this land. Some may think this fight ended with the Khol's ribbon-cutting hosted by none other than Tooley herself, but it has only just begun. Everglades Earth First!, in solidarity with the people of Coconut Creek and Margate, will not allow this pristine and precious piece of our natural environment to be massacred. The destruction of this land will bring nothing but embarrassment to the cities of Coconut Creek and Margate if it is followed through with.
At a time when environmental issues are more prominent than ever, with the looming threat of global warming and the extinction of over 100 plant and animal species every day, we cannot sacrifice any more. This and the threat that this development poses to the safety of children and property value in a time of economic instability are reason enough to stop this proposed development.
If the county and the city politicians wish to ignore their own constituents, we will plan more and larger protests with more media coverage. We will hold public events and presentations to help folks see the deep need for this land. We will tell everyone we can from surrounding communities and around the country. And most importantly, we will show No Compromise in Defense of Mother Earth!

 | 12:54 pm - Miami Walk for Farm Animals Hey guys,
I don't normally ask for this but I'm asking this one time. I'm participating in the Walk for Farm Animals on Sunday, Oct. 5th and although I already gave my donation, the site allows you to do some fund raising. This walk is a fund raiser for the nonprofit organization Farm Sanctuary. Here's a little more info on them:
Farm Sanctuary is a national, non-profit animal protection organization. Each year we rescue, rehabilitate and provide lifelong care for hundreds of animals rescued from factory farms, stockyards and slaughterhouses. In addition to operating the shelters, we work to gain legal protection for animals used in food production and to raise public awareness about factory farm cruelty and cruelty-free alternatives.
I think we all agree that animals of all kinds should be treated humanely. Watch this video and see if you agree:
Please donate! Even $1 is a contribution towards helping these animals in need!!
TO DONATE, PLEASE GO TO THIS SITE: http://www.firstgiving.com/priscillagomez
Thank you!!!
PS. If you feel this is inappropriate for the community, let me know and I will delete it.

 | 12:58 pm - Call in day TODAY, 9/17/08
Hey everyone - I am just passing this message along for some friends. Sorry if we're in several of the same groups and you see this a couple of times because I cross-posted it all over the place. This is pretty important though. . . If even 1/3 of the members of this group convinced 2 other people to call in, that would be a significant enough number of phone calls to stall this horrible bill in its tracks. Please please please pass it on - post it in your journal, other communities, and email it to all of your list serves. The nuclear industry in the U.S is proposing more than 30 new reactors - with an estimated cost of 6.2-12 BILLION USD per reactor. (SOURCE: nirs.org/neconomics/nuclearsubsidies2008.pdf ) Not only is Nuclear power is a FALSE solution to the issue of global climate change, but it's intrinsically tied to the nuclear arms industry. For inspiration on viable solutions, check out www.kilowattours.org/As a resident of a gulf state, I also hope that folks will oppose off-shore drilling. BUT... the mainstream media is devoting NO attention to the nuclear aspect of this bill, which is quite frankly frightening. Not too much of a surprise, though - considering that many of the more common outlets are owned by General Electric, which is the most profitable nuclear arms manufacturer in the world. (SOURCES: www.commondreams.org/views05/0403-25.htm , www.corpwatch.org/article.php , and www.freepress.net/ownership/chart/main ) Thanks! <3 ** From the Nuclear Information and Resource Service... ** GANG OF 10 BILL: BIGGEST GIVEAWAY TO NUCLEAR POWER INDUSTRY EVER NATIONAL CALL-IN DAY: WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 17 This is it. In the mainstream media, the Gang of 10 (actually, now it's the Gang of 20) energy bill is all about offshore oil drilling. And, to be sure, there's lots of that in the bill, which is expected to come up in the Senate late next week. But the bill would also be the biggest giveaway to the nuclear power industry ever. Unlimited loan guarantees for construction of new atomic reactors. That's right, unlimited. As much money—hundreds of billions of dollars--as everyone in the nuclear industry wants, when it wants, for as long as it wants. I'm sure I don't need to tell you how that would absolutely destroy our ability to effectively address the climate crisis and what a disaster that would be for our economy, for our nation, for our planet. How do these Senators think they can get away with this? Because they're not hearing from enough of us, often enough. They think this is a popular stand. We all need to stand up now and be counted. That's why NIRS, Physicians for Social Responsibility and other national groups are putting out the word for a National Call-In Day to the Senate on Wednesday, September 17. We need at least 10,000 phone calls to the Senate on Wednesday. We need the phones there to be ringing non-stop from dawn to dusk. Will you help? Capitol Switchboard: 202-224-3121 *Please call both of your Senators that day with a very simple message: Take taxpayer loan guarantees for nuclear power out of the Gang of 20 energy bill. (note: the bill does not yet have a number. It's called the New Energy Reform Act of 2008, but everyone will know what you are talking about if you just say 'Gang of 20 energy bill.') *Please forward this Alert to any and all of your mailing lists. *Please print this Alert and take it to any public meetings and gather places you go to between now and Wednesday. Post it at food co-ops and other central locations. *Please talk to your friends and colleagues, congregations this Sunday, PTAs next week. Spread the word. *If you want to e-mail your Senators, please do (you can do so from this link; NIRS' new e-mail-from- our-Alerts set-up still has some bugs,so we can't quite offer that yet). But also call! It is important to keep those phones ringing all day long! *Call even if you think your Senator(s) are hopeless. Everyone walking in the halls of the Senate should hear phones ringing everywhere, all day long. We can't let the nuclear industry get away with this. All that can stop it now are your actions. If we all just sit back and wait for someone else to take action, we will lose. If we all make those two calls—one to each Senator, and ask each of our friends and colleagues to make those two calls, we can show the Senate what the American people really think. And we can win. It is up to each of us. It's that simple, and that stark. Please take five minutes to make two phone calls Wednesday. And please drop us an e-mail and let us know you called (we'll be looking for 10,000e-mails in our inbox by Thursday morning!). Thank you for all that you do. Michael Mariotte Executive Director Nuclear Information and Resource Service (NIRS) nirsnet@nirs.org http://www.nirs.org 301-270-6477 September 12, 2008 P.S. For those who want more information: You can read a Physicians for Social Responsibility analysis of the nuclear provisions in the Gang of 20 energy bill here. The bill includes not just loan guarantees, but also more 'risk insurance' for new nukes, construction of a reprocessing plant, and much more. You can read a longer article on the issue I wrote for DailyKos here.

 | 03:39 pm - How you can help folks who have been arrested at the RNC Arrest tally from Ramsey County Sheriff's Office as of 10:30 p.m. last night: 284 total; 130 felonies; 51 gross misdemeanors; 103 misdemeanors.
Many arrestees are being held without booking in the Ramsey Cty jail. Not in the system yet, told no info & they won't see judges until Wed.
Though some people have been cited and released, the majority are still being held in jail. We’ve gotten many reports that people are not getting proper medical attention, are being refused their medication, and/or have been separated from the rest of the group.
Also, there are also many felony charges, which allow the state to hold the protesters for a longer period of time. Felony charges have historically been used as scare tactics against activists, and there is much less precedent for them to hold up in court. More often, these bogus charges are simply used to keep protesters off the streets and as a way to oppress and silence people.
Please show your support and solidarity by calling the jail at 651.266.9350 and demand that people are given proper medical attention, are given access to their medication, and are not separated from the larger group! Also, demand that arrestees’ charges are dropped and that they are released immediately! You can also call the Ramsey County Sheriff’s office at 651.487.5149 or the St. Paul Mayor’s office at 651.266.8510, as well your city council member, state representatives, etc.
Calls from jail to Cold Snap Legal Collective have been blocked - please call the jail - 651-266-9350 - and demand that they allow free calls to 651-356-8635
Check Cold Snap Legal Collective for the most up to date information.

 | 01:33 pm THE CAPITAL OF SOUTH OSSETIA IS WIPED OFF THE POLITICAL MAP
The day of August 8 has put a final and irreversible end to the claims of Georgia for this territory. This obvious fact just has to be recognized officially. Today, Moscow possesses an unquestionable moral right for declaring South Ossetia and Abkhazia as territories of Russia. The will of the peoples, expressed earlier at the public referendums, is to be satisfied, as well as their natural desire to be protected by a strong nation.
Saakashvili spent the whole term of his presidency provoking Russia for physical response – to his verbal humiliating statements, to the capture and interrogation of officers of the Russian peacekeeping contingent by his henchmen, to the selection of an alternative government of South Ossetia etc. Thus, when Georgian aircrafts and artillery were systematically bombing living quarters and hospitals of Tskhinval, the center of the breakaway South Ossetia, and killing injured peacekeepers, he was just doing his job. He was doing what he was instructed to do by his US employers. Tskhinvali, as the center of the unrecognized state of South Ossetia, does not exists any longer. What does exist is the Russian city of Tskhinval.

| 02:42 pm - Georgia Hi, this video is directed to an American public and the rest of civilized Western world. I am a Russian citizen, I live in United States for a long time, for over 10 years. I happened to be in Russia now and I caught all this "action" that's taking place in South Ossetia, a region in Georgia. I never posted on youtube, but I couldn't hold myself from doing it now. I had to do this. My message to American public is meant as a wake up call. American and other Western media especially CNN is feeding you complete horse shit! Russia did not invade and did not attack Georgia. It was a response to a horrible war crime committed by Georgian president Mikhail Saakashvili, this irresponsible man who just can't stand Russia, hates us, and will kiss America's and Europe's ass just to get a chance to join NATO and European Union. America has always supported Georgian "democracy" and I suspect actually that it was America who instigated Georgia to commit this crime.... on the first day of Olympics! How ironic is that? But please don't take this allegation too close heartedly, my point is not about whether or not U.S. government had any role in this, my point is to give you truth about what really happened Thursday night
So again, Russia did not invade or attack Georgia, as your media outlets are saying.
A brief geography and history lesson. South Ossetia is a very small region about 40 miles by 40 miles in the northern Georgia. It's population is around 70000 people. It borders with Russia. Today, many of the residents of South Ossetia are Russian citizens holding Russian passports, it's our people. South Ossetia had claimed independence from Georgia in 1992. Obviously it was never recognized by any international organizations. In 2006, they held an election where 99% of the voters supported independence from Georgia, and the turn out rate was 95%, it was monitored by a team of 34 international observers from the West. It still was not recognized by the world. As an analogy I would like to bring Kosovo situation, Serbian region in the south that was illegally snatched from Serbia and made into an independent country. Please look it up on Wikipedia and see how similar this situation is. How ironic is that America never supported Southern Ossetia same way it supported Kosovo. Obviously, it was made to show Russia how unfriendly the rest of the world is towards us.
Thursday night, Georgian military started an attack against South Ossetia. It was yesterday. They shelled the main city of Tshinkvali. They killed over a 1000 people. The excuse was to "restore the constitutional order in the region". BULLSHIT! This attack was an attempt to commit "ethnic cleansing", it was an act of genocide. They shelled civilian houses, schools, hospitals, without any warning. They also captured several villages near Tshinkvali. Reports say that they attempt to kill anyone of the Ossetian nationality. It was a pure act of Genocide. Wake up!
Russia couldn't watch this atrocity happening to its own citizens. We had no choice but to bring in our military into the region and protect our people. Whatever happens next the world needs to know, that the cause of this conflict is Georgia and its president. Before you accept what your media tells you, before you get fired up by McCains irresponsible allegations and comments, try remember all the lies that American media had always fed you, try to read news from other media outlets, not russian, but other parts of the world, other than U.S. or U.K.'s media.
America needs to wake up and stop doing what it's doing. Stop seeing an enemy in Russia. Stop using countries like Georgia, Ukraine, Poland, Latvia, Estonia who are basically acting like prostitutes of U.S. government in their public acts of hatred towards Russia.
And finally need to say, Mr. SSHAshvili that's how we like to call him. S.SH.A stands for U.S.A in Russian. Mr. SSHAshvili will pay for what happened yesterday.

 | 06:40 pm - New radical community for finding friends. Hello, I apologize if this is a repetitive post in your f-lists, but please bear with me as I announce the following:
add_a_radical (Livejournal Radical Networking Community) Is a newborn community in which its purpose is to link individuals together with common interests in the political spectrum--in particular the radical and revolutionary edges of the table. I created this community in the hopes of making new friends with similar views; as well as having the chance to meet different people who have varying experiences in life--I feel everyone should have a priority in their life that demands for them to speak their mind, and exercise freedom of expression and 'out of the box' thinking. I feel that most of the "Add_me" communities meant for meeting new writers on livejournal are somewhat lacking in these uniting interests, and thus, have felt obliged to create such a community as this one.
Hopefully this community will prove useful as a resource for activists and thinkers to meet new friends with common interests.
Thank you for taking the time to read your invitation to the LRNC!
