Relics
It's not like there was a lot of room on Serenity to keep a collection of anything but memories, mind. But she had a few treasures stashed away in their bunk.

A pearl hairpin that was once her great grandmother's and was sharp enough to be lethal in close quarters. A coin from earth-that-was, given to her by her father when she left home--golden and bearing the image of a woman who lead an expedition to an ocean, once. The shell casing of a bullet that Mal had dug from her thigh.

A washer, given as an engagement ring.

this is quite brilliant - you truly have a gift for fitting so much into so few words. each one of those items, only given a sentence of description each, says volumes about the person who holds them dear. pared down but not at all sparse. excellent.

thank you.

*swoons* Perfect Zoe, calm yet with hidden affection. Great choice of items and their meanings to her, especially the last one. So cute!

Thanks. I wondered about the...something of Wash giving a washer as a ring, but I couldn't think of what else would work, really. :-)

Came to this from Tara's coretex.. Perfectly conceived, beautifully executed, spare and elegant. I am envious.

Pardon my ignorance, but what is Tara's cortex?

Tara (LJC) has a fanfiction rec page where she reviews and recommends fanfiction from all over the net. I have found her choices uniformly excellent, as you might expect from such a gifted writer. Here is the link: http://fireflyrecs.diaryland.com/ At the bottom of the page you can review all her prior recs back to the beginning. Enjoy.

I also came here through Tara's Cortex recs, though it's been quite some time since you wrote this. The last line is so perfect, and the idea of a washer engagement ring is brilliant. Zoe and Wash have always kinda flown their marriage by the seat of its pants, and that ring makes all kinds of sense to me. The other objects fit Zoe as well: elegance and violence and strength in one small paragraph. Lovely.
