what the fuck
You're a straight, white, middle class male.

Why the hell can't I talk to you about privilege?

Oh. Because it makes you "feel guilty." Better not do that then.

Why would they feel guilty if they were guiltless? And if they aren't guiltless, then shouldn't they instead work to make themselves and the world a place where they didn't have to feel guilty for oppressing others?

Oh no, but they're much happier with a paper bag over their heads, pretending they are the height of virtue.

Did you see the post I deleted about this? Mine went off in a huff to shower after reading it. He seems to believe that the word "privilege" is an ad hominem attack whenever its used.

I did not catch it. You could email me if you wanted to share.

I had to explain to mine that saying "not all men think that way" is truly insulting and in a way, it's excusing the actions of the men who DO think that way.

What was that about Mercury in retrograde?

Long story short: thread on our common forum about racism devolves into a "how can we make things better for the straight white male?" because one of them came in, spewed his privilege all over about reverse racism and his being called one bad name means he's just as oppressed as POC, and everyone cowered at his feet. I resolved to keep out of privilege-laden discussions on that forum because no-one knows how to deal with the SWM-syndrome and my way of dealing with it would get me soundly banned.

[The Mercury in retrograde thing was more personal -- I've been putting my foot in my mouth over the internets recently, and had a couple of LJ errors about things posting before I was done with them and then refusing to let me edit them and get rid of the stuff I wasn't going to/didn't mean to post. Even though I don't believe in it, that planet keeps poking me in the eye.]

I'm sorry he reacted like that.

But, I'm glad to see I'm not the only one who has trouble pointing out privilege to the stubborn men we love.

God, call the waaaahbalance. If he had to exchange his 'oppression' for ours, I bet he'd keep his.

"Oh noes, someone called me a cracker once! That is just as bad as being disenfranchised and/or scared for one's life on a regular basis: what are them different-colored people and homo-se-uals complaining about?"

Well, yeah, I mean obviously queer/female/not-white(is there a word for people of every ethnicity other than white except that? it sounds clunky..)/disabled/working class/etcetcetcetc people have like such a huge amount of not-guilty privelage that we keep on shoving in the straight-white-ablebodied-middle class-men's faces, all day, every day.

I go with POC (people of colour) some times, but I believe that's more specifically for Black individuals, rather than encompassing all non-white ethnicities. I don't know. There should be a handbook; I would hate to accidentally get it wrong.

Exactly. I don't want to use offensive terms for anyone, but I don't know what terms people prefer, largely because I'm a white person in a coutry where the overwhelming majority of people are white too. Which makes me full up with white privelage, and without anyone around here to ask about how to not act like a prevelaged asshat.
If ya know what I mean :)
