 | 07:14 am - Two things... Sorry if they've been mentioned before, but, my guess will be they haven't or I wouldn't be here making the suggestion.
The first one is actually stating the fact that to make the suggestion I wanted, I had to search for this journal, and nowhere on the main Elfwood journal, nor on the Discussion part of Elfwood, nor even in the FARP guide did I find a link to it... maybe adding one somewhere would be nice ? If it exists, I'm sorry, must have overlooked it.
The real suggestion, is that it would be nice to add the size limit of personal pictures in the Extranet. The only reason I know is it's 25 kb, is because the sad little birdie told me so when I tried to submit changes. It's not really a necesary change, just one that'd make things just a little bit easier and, well, clearer.
Thanks for taking the time to read.

 | 11:49 am - "The Shire" As A Fanfic Term I reread the Wyvern's Library Rules today.
I noticed something in the Fan Fiction section that runs into some problems: ... The usage of the word "hobbit," "the Shire," and the elven language Quenya are all examples of fan fiction. In this case, of course, we're referring to J.R.R. Tolkien's "Hobbit" and "Lord of the Rings" series. True, most of these terms belong to Tolkein. The Shire, however, could be appropriately used anywhere. The word is used in the real world. Merriam-Webster Online defines shire as 1 : an administrative subdivision; especially : a county in England. With this definition, you could have Joe Mann coming home to the Shire of Landvalley, affectionately known as the Shire, in a world that has nothing whatsoever to do with Tolkein's Middle Earth. The use of the same term as Tolkein would be pure coincidence. For that technicality, I suggest that "the Shire" be taken out of the quoted sentence. Current Mood: hungry Current Music: The Cardigans

 | 02:04 pm - Publish Nonchanges! This would probably have made recovery from the recent crash slightly easier, had it been implemented.
You have to go through the same process to update something not requiring a ticket as when you do. Therefore, when ticket lineups are closed, they also don't let you add anything not requiring a ticket. Right now, tens of thousands of Elfwooders want to make changes to their private info and passwords, which have nothing to do with submitting tickets, but can't because ticket lineups are closed. Shouldn't there be a separate process for giving your private info, changing your bio, and generally adding no Mod-requiring works of art?
Every single Elfwooder is stuck with me. I'm not playing the minority in asking for this. Current Mood: concerned Current Music: SNES soundtrack -- Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest (music by Dave Wise)

 | 11:41 pm - a new segment for rules? We as a communiy seem very happy to bring up questions as to what fits into genre. and we seem content to do it here in LJ. we have under rules a mini ERB FAQ but no link to a normal FAQ as to general picture/story content/rules. i for one would like to see perhaps one day in the future if it reaches the top of a very long list of things to do (for which i am fully appreciative of all the staff do) is a FAQ under rules on the main page for both wyverns and sci-fi/fantasy. there have been a lot of questions asked on LJ across a few commnities that i always feel help clear up why some of the rules are in place. maybe links to those entries could be put up or something, so that they are within easy reach and perhaps it would cut down the number of times people ask the same question of 'why isn't this allowed'?
course... it might not too... :P

 | 11:50 am - The "100KB" rule at Wyvern Is it possible to get an automatic size check on Wyvern's Library like there is in the galleries? It was a bit frustrating finding out that my story got rejected simply because of a size rule after 3 weeks of waiting.

 | 12:41 pm - Suggested additions for the FAQ Q: "How do I put a linebreak in my profile or image descriptions?"
A: Type <br> where you want a linebreak.
Q: "How do I put a link in my profile or image descriptions?"
A: The basic form is <a href="[URL]">[LINK TEXT]</a>
Replace [URL] with the web address of the site you want to link to. "http://www.google.com" is such an address, for example. Do make sure you include the http://, otherwise the link will not work.
Replace [LINK TEXT] with the words you want to have used as the link.
Example:
<a href="http://elfwood.lysator.liu.se/art/n/o/none/none.html">Klimpen's gallery</a>
will show up as: Klimpen's gallery

 | 11:40 pm - Extranet: Picture Description: Techniques Used I refer you to the "Edit Info" page for each picture. Under the heading "Picture Techniques Used" is everything I could possibly think of except smudging. In my opinion, it would be a good idea to add this option. Contrary to popular belief, smudging isn't always a given; it's not always used with pencils and even if it is, the artist may want to highlight pictures that have used a considerable amount of smudging compared to others. Think of anime pictures coloured in the style of blockish shading, or even cartoons. What about line drawings? I accept that if you do approve this, it might be difficult to add it to the search engine. Current Mood: full Current Music: FFIV - Epilogue: Part 1 of 3

 | 11:49 pm - ability to control updating and publishing the recent post in the elfwood journal reminded me of an issue i had a few months back, where it was rather irritating to have to wait for something to go through a ticket line that probably didnt need to.
is it possible to try and modify how the changes are published. i realise modifications to stories porbably need checking over... but could there be two separate functions? (maybe there is and im stupid i dont know) so there's an update button and a publish button?
or perhaps even a way to have a checklist for publishing.. where you can select from the list of new/updated things what you want to go through to the ticket line?
i dunno if its a big enough of a problem for this to be necessary... just an idea

| 05:12 pm - Idea for Mod's Choice improvement I posted the following message in Elfwoodrant but I found out that there actually a suggestion livejournal so I'm going to post a copy here as well:
I just thought of something that may help resolve some of the anger and frustrations toward MC. I think it is nice to have quality and diverse artwork displayed at the main page. However, the real problem arises from that fact that MC is given on a purely subjective manner: Mod sees picture, Mod thinks picture is worthy, picture gets Mod’s choice. Since Elfwood is a website for aspiring artist, wouldn't it be great if the Mod's actually gave a brief explanation as to why a certain piece is chosen. Maybe point out some of the technical strong points or just tells us why they picked it. I think when people understand the reasons behind the chosen pieces then there would less annoying comments like "this sucks" or "why did this get picked?" etc. and it would be a more constructive way for others to understand why their pieces weren't picked. I think it would be a win win situation.

 | 05:07 pm - after the MC massive rant and massive response i had a thought. MC's are given to pieces of 'exceptional' standard. why not have a separate MC for potential? expose those artists who ahve art that is 'good' but not 'exceptional' a lot of artists improve through CC, and this could be a good way to expose more artists with high potential.
just a thought... to see what other people think of the idea...

 | 06:19 pm lately ive found myself spending my time on deviantart then elfwood and that kinda makes me sad. i really like elfwood and the fact that there are real artist there and not hack jobs and art thieves everywhere. But yet i still dont seem to be visiting elfwood as much as i used to. The reason, i beleave, is that its hard to follow when your favorite artist update. The only way really to find out if there is anything new with some of your favorite artist is to manually go and check each and every gallery. I have a dialup connection, so it takes a bit to load up all the thumbnails and everything. Its like, why bother. Its such a hassle to go through so many gallerys and find only one or two updated for that week. I just wish there was something like on deviant where you could have a watchlist and get informed when new art was put up on your favorite artist page.
god, i know it would prolly be a pain in the butt to code and get working and everything. But it would make elfwood a lot more friendlyer. I mean, elfwood is sappose to be a community of artist, yet i feel so disjointed from everyone.

 | 02:44 pm - Of Guilds and Rings. Anyone who has been around for a while and has browsed Elfwood thoroughly enough would have heard of such a thing as a 'Gryphon Guild', which is a ring of artists on EW who are interested in the said mythical beastie.
So why not make it possible for Elfwood artists with a common interest (be it a mythical creature, a favourite author or even style and medium) to band together in a ring within the Elfwood site.
There could be a special page for these 'Guilds' or 'Rings' (or however else they may be chosen to be called) and the the page for each guild would contain a short description of its theme, its logo/coat of arms and the list of people belonging to it with links to their Elfwood galleries.
To be a member of any guild an artist has to have a certain percentage (which doesn't have to be very large) of pictures in their gallery that follow the theme of the guild. The page could also have links to any tours which fall within the guild sphere. Each guild should have a responsible person at its head - most likely the person who put it together in the first place - who would have to keep it up to date and there should also be a minimum number of members to start a guild (4-5).
I thing this suggestion would really help Elfwood members to find other artists of common interest as well as pictures of a particular themes and in particular medium. It could serve as another tool to bring the artists of common interest together.
What do you think?
N
p.s. If anyone is going to say there are already similar things in Elftown, I would tell them that that place has grown into an entity quite separate from Elfwood and itself is not so simple to navigate. What I am talking is something as simple as a links page, but which I think could be of real value. Current Mood: optimistic

 | 04:44 pm - What happened to FARP? & Suggestion to suggestors I know that the FARP articles are done by elfwood artists, so this could technicaly be a suggestion to Elfwood Participants instead of Elfwood.
It has been almost 2 months since an update for FARP has come out. I know it has troubles with the scripting (white text and all that), but still, I would like to see some new art/writing tutorials. And before you tell me to go and claim a tutorial to write, I plan on doing so as soon as I finish this little suggestion. There are a few topics in FARP that have been claimed, so I know that at least someone is working on makeing tutorials. And I plan to do so also.
This is a suggestion to all those who make suggestions. Instead of just saying what would make elfwood better, try and make elfwood better, too. Do what you can, for some, that would be commenting on new artists, or encouraging people who don't get too many comments, writing a tutorial, or maybe for those who know some scripting, offer help to elfwood. I know that some people are doing just that, and this is just a suggestion and by no means is ment to hurt peoples feelings (If it does, I am sorry I didn't suggest this sooner). This is only a suggestion, and by no means must you do any of this, but if we help elwood, we are helping everyone in elfwood.
So the two main suggestions in this post are:
to Elfwood: Please, Fix FARP... to Elfwooders: Please, Help make Elfwood better... Current Mood: content

 | 07:18 pm - I have an idea, too! I read the last post and got this idea:
Wiould it be possible for elfwood to use a hide comments option, or something similar? If you look at livejournal, you'd see what I mean! One could, in theroy, so the picture click a "post comment" botton, and then go back to that picture, or, click a "read comments" botton to see what other people think. That way, well, it would help the really long comments and keep an artists page clean.
Dunno if that would work in EW, but it's worth a thought, right? =) Current Mood: thoughtful

 | 05:53 pm I have two suggestions, and while neither are original complaints, they don't seem to have been posted here before.
Firstly, would it be possible to have Elfwood automatically email an artist or writer whenever a piece of theirs is used in a tour? Until fairly recently, I believed that I had no pictures in tours, as I didn't know that the only way to actually find out is to visit the actual page (whenever I wanted to see a picture or read comments, etc, I'd go to the Extranet, where tours don't show up). I certainly don't mind being on tours - in fact, I'm flattered - but either way, I want to know about it. An email seems like the most convenient way to me. Perhaps it could even be optional, like the comments email.
The other thing is about those annoying margin-breaking comments along the lines of "it's so CUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU-lots more U's-UUUUTE!!!!!". They decenter the picture (sometimes moving it off the side of the page completely) and make it very difficult to read the description and other comments. Could some sort of check be made when a comment is posted to prevent this? I know nothing about programming, so maybe there's nothing that can be done, but something that automatically breaks up 'words' that are longer than a set limit would be really nice. The only problem I can see with that is if the commenter is trying to give the artist an URL, but if the string-breaker isn't too overzealous, that shouldn't be a big issue.
Just a couple of suggestions.

 | 02:11 am - Favorites Folder I thought it would be cool to add a section (or page) to the elfwood galleries that would have the person's favorite things on elfwood; such as art, stories or fellow members. It would let the members not have to learn a bunch of hypertexting to add links and such and it would free up some space in the bios. Current Mood: stressed Current Music: misc.

 | 12:22 am - My two cents Uh, hi y'all. I just joined, and I have these two suggestions that have been swimming around in my head, so here they are.
1. I would like to be able to view the full image while commenting rather than the thumbnail. It's a little frustrating to try to absorb every detail of the image before I click the comment button so that I can be sure not to miss something in my comment.
I think it would make it easier for people to type more productive and constructive comments when they can view the entire image that they're commenting on.
2. Get rid of the language filters. I get the feeling this suggestion won't be very popular, but the language filters just seem like a waste of effort. They're way too easy to get around. Somebody can type "this fuking sux @$$" and the filter will let it pass. Besides, most flamers can't type anyways.
And if the filters aren't taken away, could there at least be some information about what words will not be allowed, seeing as words like "suck", which isn't necessarily a negative word, can get you in trouble.
It just seems to me that if you're so sensitive that you can't handle a comment like "this is crap you suck lol" then maybe you shouldn't be posting your work on the world wide web.
***
I guess it seems pretty ungrateful to be given a free service like Elfwood and still have something to complain about. Infinite thanks to Thomas and all the Elfwood pantheon for your patience.

 | 10:54 pm - How about a writer's section for 'other genres' I'm a budding writer, and I really like that Elfwood gives me a place to post my fiction - but only when I write fantasy, science fiction, horror, or similar. Only when it is what they call 'genre fiction'.
I've been searching the web for a place like Elfwood for my other writing, and I've simply not found a community where I'm likely to get as many readers enjoying what I have to say. Most of them want to make the -writer- pay to post, and offer themselves up not as a place to share fiction and form a community, but to get critiques by print-published authors and maybe get print-published yourself.
Call me odd, but for me it is not about finding some printing house to carry me, but about finding all of you and all those readers. I don't need to get paid to feel good about my work, I need to get feedback.
So I'm just fine with a community where readers drop in and read my works without every giving me a dime.
But...
Fantasy isn't all I write, and I would like to have a place to put my other work that was just as good of a community.
So I'd like to propose elfwood open up a second writer's area - for 'other fiction' Perhaps with the requirement that your fantasy work always outnumber your other work to keep that place from overtaking things here.
But, it would be nice to have that place exist somewhere, and this seems an ideal place to be able to do it.
My Elfwood page: http://elfwood.lysator.liu.se/art/b/r/brianfw/brianfw.html and my writer page is currently in the upload queue, waiting to go online. I suspect it will be here in the end: http://elfwood.lysator.liu.se/libr/b/r/brianfw2/brianfw2.html But as I post this, there are 633 items ahead of it in the line, so it will be a few days most likely.
