05:55 pm - Podfic: The Inner Dark
As part of the [info]amplificathon, [info]luzula has just posted a reading of my Earthsea fanfic The Inner Dark. It's in mp3 format, and you can download it from here.

[info]amplificathon is an annual podfic challenge designed to promote the diversity of podfic across fandoms and pairings. This year it's running from April 7th to June 2nd.

09:34 am - looking for an excuse to write Earthsea fic?
[info]majoritython, a ficathon about women and people of color in positions of political power.

A quick look through the Earthsea novels reminds me that I can't think of anyone in this fandom in a position of political power who *isn't* a person of color or a woman. So, any takers?

05:00 pm - Challenge 14
Theme: Women
Letter: E
Quotation:
my heart's grown heavy, my knees will not support me,
that once on a time were fleet for the dance as fawns.
This state I oft bemoan; but what's to do?
Not to grow old, being human, there's no way.

Sappho (transl. Martin West)

Challenge responses may use any of the three individually, or two together, or even all three, if you're feeling in the mood. The letter can be a person, place or object with that initial letter (Isolate Tower has a lot of suggestions), or whatever you will.

Challenges remain open indefinitely; previous challenges can be found in the memories. If you'd like to suggest a challenge, or even take over doing them, do comment!

Theme: Weather
Letter: C
Quotation:
Experience is never limited, and it is never complete; it is an immense sensibility, a kind of huge spider-web of the finest silken threads suspended in the chamber of consciousness, and catching every air-borne particle in its tissue.
The Art of Fiction, Henry James

Theme: Winter
Letter: B
Quotation:
Downhill I came, hungry, and yet not starved;
Cold, yet had heat within me that was proof
Against the North wind; tired, yet so that rest
Had seemed the sweetest thing under a roof.

01:01 pm - Resuming community challenges: Challenge 10
Spurred by the interest in Earthsea at [info]yuletide, I'm restarting the challenges. I plan for three prompts:

(a) A theme
(b) A letter
(c) A quotation

The letter can be a person, place or object with that initial letter (Isolate Tower has a lot of suggestions), or whatever you will.

Challenge responses may use any of the three individually, or two together, or even all three, if you're feeling in the mood.

So, for now, Challenge 10:

Theme: Resolution(s)
Letter: A
Quotation:
I had seen birth and death,
But had thought they were different.
('The Journey of the Magi', TS Eliot)

As before, challenges remain open indefinitely; previous challenges can be found in the memories. If you'd like to suggest a challenge, or even take over doing them, do comment!

May your new year be filled with magic!

11:32 am - New Year's Resolutions challenges
[info]yuletide has three Earthsea challenges in their New Year's Resolutions 2007:

Recipient: Aimeek
Characters: Any
Details: I read a really good crossover between Earthsea and BtVS, and I'd love to read another one

Recipient: Minerva McTabby
Characters: Ged, Jasper
Details: Ged/Jasper slash preferable; gen with those characters would also be lovely.

Recipient: Smaragdvogel
Characters: Ged, Vetch (no details)

Anyone can participate in NYR. It runs until the next Yuletide starts (usually around November), although filled requests are removed from the list. Stories must be 1000 words minimum and contain all the listed characters.

03:35 am - Recommendations from Yuletide
There are a couple of lovely Earthsea stories at [info]yuletide this year. Though they're very different from each other, the two share a strong canonical feel.

Lighting the Lamps, by [info]solvent90
'After the desert and the dark, the bright complexity of village life had been a strange new pattern to learn, a maze she stumbled in, feeling young and awkward and foreign.' A quiet, unsentimental vignette, with excellent characterisations (Tehanu)

The Veins of the Forest, by [info]ellen_fremedon
'Metteir wore the crimson standard as her cloak all winter and spring. And when in summer she bore a son, she swaddled him in it, and she called him Azver, which is 'war-banner' in the Kargish tongue.' Luscious prose studded with precise details characterises this backstory (The Farthest Shore)

If anyone has yet to discover it, the While We Tell of Yuletide Treasure archive has more Earthsea tales from previous years, plus many other literary & fantasy fandoms

12:04 am - Yuletide
I'm sure everyone reading here is well aware of [info]yuletide, but just a quick note to remind that Earthsea is one of the available rare fandoms, and there are currently five requests. The only entrance requirement is being at least 18 (unless you've previously defaulted), and sign ups close on Thursday 2 November.

08:06 am - More Tenar Fic
I posted this story awhile ago on FFnet, and for some reason never got around to posting it here. It's the final installment in what has become a loose trilogy about Tenar’s life on Gont. I’ve always been fascinated by the gap between the Tombs of Atuan and Tehanu, and these stories were my way of trying to bridge the distance between Arha and Goha. That said, this story is theoretical, not canonical. Chronologically, it could never happen. I’ve stretched some time frames and squished others, so that the events I wanted to meet could. Also, the Master Hand in the story is not intended to be the character who appears in A Wizard Of Earthsea or Le Guin’s later works.

Standard Disclaimers Apply: Tenar and the universe of Earthsea belong solely to Ursula K. Le Guin, and this story was written solely for amusement, and not profit.

07:50 am - Naming the Land (Tenar/Ged--Hard R)
I've written some Earthsea-themed drabbles, but this missing moment from Tehanu spoke to me. So here's my first post here!

Coincidentally, it was written as a birthday gift for [info]aberforths_rug!

Title : Naming the Land

Rating : Hard R

Warnings: Middle-aged sexuality. So there. :-)

This story contains sexually suggestive material. If you are under the age of eighteen—or the age at which such material may be legally viewed in your locality--please do not click on the link below.

Length: ~2250 words

Summary: They lay that night on the hearthstones and there Tenar taught Ged the mystery that the wisest man could not teach him. (Tenar/Ged, Tehanu missing scene)

Thanks to [info]scriblix for the beta!

The poll came down in favour of accepting fiction based on adaptations, with appropriate header labelling. I've amended the description text for the community to state this.

08:35 am - Challenge 9: Dragons
Tell us stories of dragons... Why is Yevaud such an atypical dragon? Is Kalessin really Segoy? Are there any dragon-men? What's it like to fly on the other wind? What's Bar Oth's story? How did dragons separate from humans?

Previous challenges are still open if this topic doesn't spark your interest.

09:09 pm - Poll reminder
Just a quick reminder that there is an ongoing poll about whether this community should accept fiction based on the various adaptations of Earthsea.

I'll leave it open for another week so that everyone has a chance to vote.

Meanwhile, don't forget this month's challenge, Crossovers
