on my way home from work at about 1:45am, i was about halfway done on my two-bus commute, only to smell bagels baking down the street...

bags and bags and bags of them. i took about 12 from assorted bags, there are many different flavors and sizes, and they last forever in the freezer!

oh san frandisco, how i love you.

    helpful suggestions
So I worked in a hotel for awhile and what I noticed is all the items from the rooms being thrown away.

After I quit I notice that I needed an iron... So I went diving at the hotel I worked at and sure enough there is a iron and ironing board. The iron works great, and the board just had an issue folding up, but it took me less then 2 mins to fix that problem. The iron seems like it just got thrown away due to a little crack on the side.

There are also tons of sheets and blankets that get thrown away too. I've noticed during renovation they were throwing away lots of chairs, tables, tv's, alarm clocks, and mattresses in one of those huge temporary portable garbage bins things whatever they're called it won't come to mind, but yeah.

I suggest you go at night and search for renovating hotels. I know at the smaller hotels there is one person on duty and usually they are sleeping in the back office at night. I know I did working audit. I would avoid during the day/evening due to pissy managers.

Also any traveling broke folks out there it is really easy to score free full service breakfast's from hotels in the morning. My beau and I hitched hiked across the states and got treated to breakfests at many hotels along our route. Look clean and act as if you were staying there waalaa eggs, biscuits, pancakes, waffles, ham, sausage, oj... ect. Some even have business centers were you can access the web, as well as free razors, combs, shampoos, soaps, tampons, sewing kits, blah blah.

we found a whole dumpster full of fruit and vegetables! a lot of them were perfectly fine.
and we found some bread. X] ha
so i'd say, pretty fulfilling night.

However, I'm staying in Richmond for awhile and was wondering if anyone knew any good diving spots here.

    help!

    haa
okay so i really wanna get into diving, but i'm not really sure of any good places for it.
i was with Hanniel on the infamous diving trip where we scored a porn shot and old case of cheap beer. x]
although it was a lot of fun, nothing too useful, if you get my drift.
    any ideas??
    thanks!

    Any tips?
    Hello everyone!

I have been interested in diving for a while, but I didn't actually attempt it until last weekend... My friends and I went to a local shopping plaza and went through at least 10 dumpsters. All we found though was a porn shot (haaha) and a case of cheap beer. Now, I don't know if you can actually describe dumpster diving, but maybe we weren't being thorough enough? I just feel like we were missing something. I'm getting ready to move out on my own, so I'd really like to get good at diving if I can, haa.

Does anyone have tips on diving in general?
I'm really interested in food, so if you have any tips or experiences to share, I would really appreciate that as well.

I'm in the Southern Maryland area, so if anyone knows of some good spots to try (since our first try was obviously a bust), that would be really helpful.

    Thanks so much!

NOOB and sooo excited about this new found (to me) idea. I have DD'd for work (digging up documents and stuff) but not just for fun.

Any Birmingham, Alabama divers or suggestions on stores to 'hit?'

    Olympia residents?
Hey, I live in good ol' Olywa and was wondering where I might find some good dumpsters.
I'm kind of a noob, seeing as I've only dumpstered a few times (at Evergreen for the end-of-year scores! Woo!).
So, does anyone know of any good spots?
Also, I'm just interested in non-food items for now because my food situation is good. (With the exception of any nice bakeries-- I love me some baked goods.)
The only food dumpstering I've ever done is at a bakery on Capitol way- It's pink with big bay windows, and she had the best chocolate cake in her dumpster. :)

    Thanks! ~Caitlin

I've lurked this community for years, and now I am finally ready to contribute!

I'm back home from college, and I've decided to dumpster every night on my bicycle. I live in the middle of suburbia, so the dumpsters don't tend to be picked over. Last night's loot:

    - Brand New ( returned ), functional, portable induction stove that sells for $200

    - Le Creuset enamel kettle ( slightly dinged, perfectly functional)

    - Collapsible measuring cups ( perfect condition )

    - A kevlar bike tire, unfortunately it had a rip in the sidewall : (

    - Brand New ( returned ), functional dog shaving kit that sells for $130

    - Some calcium fruit chews

    - Fancy tooth paste

    - A metal mesh bin ( fixable)

    - Some sort of grilling device (perfect)

Today I had the idea of building a sweet linux computer using dumpstered computer components. I'm hoping that this will be realized by the end of summer, because I really want a machine that will play Spore!

Since my last post here I have found:

-white 3-shelf DVD/book shelf--one of the rounded ones that sits in a corner
-half a bag of pastries and donuts
    -4 card tables
-large rectangular cushion thing; my mom is taking that and the card tables
-bag of that fake cotton snow stuff you put around your christmas tree, looks like quilt batting

My mom also said she furnished her whole apartment in college by dumpster diving. I know she had mentioned DDing before but I never asked her about it. Awesome.

I've never dumpster dived before, though I've known a few who have. It was pretty big in some of my family when I was younger but I never seemed to pick up on it. I've always been curious, though, and I kind of want to give it a shot. I live in Boston and it's rich, bratty, college-kid heaven. I'm assuming I could find some good things about town. Unfortunately, I'm not very assertive, or sneaky, or whatever you need to be in order to crawl through a dumpster. Boston is yuppy-ville and I'm nervous people are going to have nasty reactions. Obviously, I don't care about the looks or what they'll say, I'm afraid that their nasty reactions will lead to cops or the like. I guess I should research laws? Is it ILLEGAL to rummage through trash? All I know is that I can't afford to live and I'm also pretty damn curious, so what the hell!?

Do any of you live in Boston? I'd really like some advice on this before I get myself in all kinds of trouble... or harm... or something.

    THANKS!

    Seattle Dumpster Diving?
    Greetings fellow dumpster divers,
I just moved from Santa Cruz, California -- a land where you're doing something wrong if you ever have to pay for bread -- to Seattle WA, and I have yet to learn any of the dumpsters around here. Food prices around here are killing me, so I'd love any hints in the right direction, or even to meet up and go dumpstering and make some friends out of this.

    Thanks.

Any excellent spot suggestions for Canton,Ohio ? Main concerns are currently furniture. and all the food places we've checked have compressors but I'm sure we're just not looking hard enough.
