Update infos [Jul. 23rd, 2008|10:13 pm]

iamjunkie

Hello everyone!!

I posted an entry like age ago! I want to update with my pregnancy and baby. Good news, I am no longer pregnancy, whew... I miss wear my old clothes. My daughter is born on May 19th instead of May 17th. I was almost 41 weeks pregnant and doctor was planning to induce it. I gave a natural birth (without epi and etc). My daughter weight 7.7 and 19 half long.

Now, she is 2 months old. She started to hold her neck still and move forward where she want to see. She is very alert baby and love to see new things around her. So, I decided to print lot of black , white, red outline shapes photo and put it up on the wall where the crib is. (I should take pic so you can get an idea). Recently, she got vaccines and it was hard on me to see her cry. She weight 13.2 (what a big baby).

I made a mei tai carrier for her but she doesnt like it. I think I have to wait till she is little older like 5 to 6 months old to use mei tai carrier. I like my first one but wanna to make other one.

I would post pictures of her but I seem couldnt post picture without show the link. Any suggest??

Milk! [May. 20th, 2008|07:13 pm]

jeni_mama

OMG, my DD, Jeni, finally signed "milk!" She's going to be 1 year old within 2 weeks soon. She has been picking up a lot of words in sign language, but the word "milk." I didn't know why, especially when I've been nursing her so frequently even to this day, and every time I nursed her, I signed "milk" hoping that she'll sign it. Today, she was walking toward me and signed "milk" and started to pull my shirt up. Finally, she got it!

two things...

I use the sonic alert system to wake me up if jude cries in the middle of the night. my ancient clock's vibrator kicked the bucket so I seized the chance to upgrade to their insanely adorable sweetheart model ($36 w/ free shipping off amazon!). when the clock arrived, my excitement turned into horror and disappointment, because it does NOT come with a built in recivever. the situation was resolved after a few rounds of email tag with a rep from sonic alert... so if you're planning on getting a new sonic alert clock, the SB1000 model is the only one with a built-in recivever.

and I've got a question...

we moved to an apartment complex and my five year old has been making new friends. it's awkard for me, because his playmates will come up to me and try to talk to me. my son will tell them that "mommy cannot hear, she talks with her hands" but I do not think that a five year old child would really understand and it shows, because they continue talking to me. it's awkard for me, because what am I supposed to do other than smile blankly at them?!? I do not really like the idea of my son having to interpret for me, so it makes me sad when I see him trying to explain why his mommy doesn't talk to his playmates without any results. pointing to my ears and shaking my head doesn't always work... what else can I do that will not require my son taking the role as an interpreter?

Age: Just turned 25 on the 29th
Location: Fairfield, CA
Job: Full time student/full time mommy
Children and Ages: Jeni, will be 10 months old on the 1st
Hobbies: Snowboarding, photography, scrapbooking, reading, outdoor activities, etc
More about me: For the most of my life, I grew up in Sacramento, CA and attended hearing elementary schools with DHOH program. Then I went to hearing middle school and high school without DHOH program. I was the only deaf student there 'cause my parents wanted me to attend same school with my brother who was 10 months younger than me, instead of going to school with DHOH program that was so far away from home. I was the first child, so of course they didn't want me to go away to Fremont school. However, I managed to convince my parents to allow my youngest brother, who is also deaf, to go to Fremont for school. Anyway, I'm engaged to Jeni's father, who is hearing. We have been best friends since our freshman year in high school, and became together romantically after we both graduated from high school. Now we have a daughter together. I live for that baby girl.

Hey everyone
My son seems to be drooling tons and tons lately and wanting to suck on his pacifer lots or on his hand or anything. Is it possible he could be teething? Any ideas? I've read that it can start as early as 3 months. He's 3 months and 9 days old.

Spitting up through the nose [Nov. 29th, 2007|07:29 pm]

ariesroses
[mood | uncomfortable]

My son has been spitting up a few times through his nose and then when that happens he arches his back big time which freaks me out because he coughs and tries to breathe. I've read that this could be too much food for him eating or due to the bottle or too much bouncing. Anyone out there has experienced this and come up with solutions? I am planning on calling the doctor tomorrow. He will be 3 months old on Dec. 2nd.

story time [Nov. 7th, 2007|01:07 pm]

[mood | cheerful]

my 3 mo old DD, cassandra does  a mini baby flip-out full of laughter and smiles and squeals when i sign Aesop's to her in full ASL  with all the facial expressions and space placement and question-answer mode like "see door? (nod-nod)  knock!".  she really doesnt respond well when i read out loud to her, or use english-based signing.  only ASL for the bebe. haha.  i suppose its just naturally more visually entertaining, but i thought it was neat. shes thoroughly entertained, even more so than if i am making random nonlinguistic faces like sticking out tongue or raspberries.

another upside is signing asl really simplifies and clarifies these stories, keeps her attention longer.

Baby/toddler signing [Oct. 20th, 2007|11:20 am]

curvedmetal
[mood | curious]

I'm curious if and how your children sign. When did they start? Did you follow any "instructions" or did you just wing it and do what came naturally?

It always amuses me to hear about how hearing people teach their babies "baby sign." At the risk of sounding snotty, I think it's silly how they're so proud that, say, their 10-month old can (badly) sign one thing. I've looked in "baby sign" books and been shocked to see incorrect, made-up signs touted as ASL. What the? Do the people who write these books think there's no chance that someone who knows anything might look in the book?

I might be jinxing myself horribly here, but I sure as heck hope that my baby will be able to sign at 6-7 months old and know a few words by 10 months. I also hope that my rugrat will be able to sign as fluently as a toddler can before she utters her first word.

Anyway, I'd like to hear all your stories about your babies signing (or not signing). How did it develop? What did they sign? When did they speak? Did they then sign and speak? Etc.

communication with infants [Oct. 17th, 2007|04:26 am]

dionysian
I've been thinking a lot about mother-infant communication since I am deaf, my baby girl is hearing, and my partner & family are hearing. My partner is the only one who signs consistently. I cant lipread him for the LIFE of me, so he learned sign... but i speak pretty well and he understands me very well, so he signs and i speak. thats kind of odd about our relationship, among other things. The other odd thing is that I don't think I speak to her enough. I just feel like she has absolutely no clue and no interest in my speech, and its very unrewarding to do it on a consistent basis. She perks up more for sign than she does for speech. So I have been signing to her at the same time as I talk, sometimes, and just doing silly babble to her, and a lot of times I am just quiet with her and let her look around and wiggle and offer her things to grasp or look at. I just wish I felt more comfortable chatting away with her, especially in public. But I have some kind of hang up, it really does feel like i am talking out loud to myself, and i feel so silly when she has no response and stares off. Maybe her interest in my speech will improve once she starts to comprehend the world in general more, its just kind of a concern because I know she needs lots of stimulation even though she cant respond, and I feel like I'm not doing what I'm supposed to be doing.  Her dad seems to have the same issue, even though he is hearing, he just makes random babbly noises at her, nothing that would lead to her understanding real words or connect speech to actions.  She coos and ahhs at him more than with me though because he "responds" with his own oohs at the right time.  She probably already learned that I dont respond enough to it since i have to hold my hand on her neck or chest to feel the cooing. :(

So in any case, I found this study that studied infant communication differences between hearing and deaf mothers. I like reading journal articles but I hate summarizing them, sorry.  The important stuff is on the first 3 pages and in the end at "discussion" :)

Curiousity and question [Oct. 15th, 2007|10:22 am]

[mood | calm]

Anyone out there use breastmilk and supplement/formula for their little one?

First time mom here and my breastfeeding is going okay except taking an emotional toll on me since he seems to want to eat every 2-3 hours. The feeding goes for about an hour and then an hour later he wants to eat and I can't get anything done sometimes. So what I am doing now is to pump the breastmilk to store it and then have supplement/formula on hand in case he's still hungry.

hello everyone :) [Oct. 12th, 2007|08:57 pm]

dionysian
Just thought I'd start things off with a post!

This afternoon, I was out at Atlanta's big flashy mall, Lenox mall. I could hardly deal with how many people tried to talk to me about either the baby or the wrap the baby was in. My fault for having a HOT PINK wrap, I guess, but it was still kind of stressful, being deaf and all, with the attention. At one point, I moved the baby from the front carry to the tummy carry, and she got cranky and was crying (she has a freaking loud cry) and an older couple came over and the lady said, "whats wrong with the baby?" haha. "Geez, I dont know, she has this problem called NEWBORN?" IN any case, I told the lady, "I think she's looking for something to suck on" and the woman said, "Do you breastfeed?" while simultaneously pushing up her breast with her hand, lol. Who knows how many other comments and murmurs I missed since that lady is the only one that came right up and engaged me. A food vendor guy was also trying to talk to me about the wrap, and every clerk in the stores I went into kept coming up to look at the baby. I try really hard to give off the vibe that I'm not too interested in chitchat with others in order to avoid any misunderstandings and whatnot from them being hearing. But today was hard to blend in with a baby strapped onto me in hot pink. ha.

How many of you babywear or plan to? For those of you who may not know what that is: check out www.thebabywearer.com or www.mamatoto.org to find out about slings, wraps, podegais, pouches, mei tais and more!

I find babywearing really calms my 8 wk old girl down and makes our outings really pleasant, she hardly ever fusses or cries, and if she does i'm able to notice and chill her out easily. And also since she is probably pushing close to 14 lbs now (I know, ha) it really makes holding and carrying her easy on me :) i hate strollers, for the most part, they are so bulky and i find myself having to check on her all the time and getting nervous that I might miss her yelling.

In other news, I tried out the back carry tonight, finally. I was too nervous before, but I got help from my partner to just spot for me as I did it by myself, and it was surprisingly easy to get her set up. I had her head really close to my shoulder so I could just peer over behind my shoulder and see what she was doing. I had concerns about back wraps, cause I worried if I cant hear her, I might not notice her crying until she was pretty much bucking and shrieking... but I could see her over my shoulder just fine with a little glance. I kind of hoped she would help me test if I could notice her crying on my back, but she was just too happy in the wrap the whole time. In case you cant tell in the pics, her arm is up near her mouth and shes resting her head on her arm and shes probably sucking her little hand.
