This seems wrong to me, since the restaurant, Ciampa Manor, and Alderman Connolly have all been in Davis Square for decades, without any trouble. I don't see a good argument for restricting the hours of non-liquor-serving businesses.

My apartment's NStar account is in a roomie's name, so I haven't been able to log in and try to sign up yet, but the site implies that there are not location restrictions, and that these options are available to all their customers. If you've already signed up, I'd love to hear about whether you ran into any issues.
My favorite bit, because it's so true:
Eager customers line up out the door and onto the sidewalk waiting to get to the counter and see what the choices are that day. Bhetia has a devoted following and chats with each fan at the small counter, greeting many as old friends. It's more a community happening than a tedious wait in line.
Guru is also expanding into the space next door (where the Chinese restaurant was before the fire) and will have a much larger kitchen and larger take-out area including a few tables. Presumably in warmer weather, there will be tables outside on the patio, too.
If you haven't tried this place yet, get thee up the hill to Teele (and a bit past) and get some. They also catered the last Theatre@First cast party and there were rave reviews. Yumyum.
[I am in no way affiliated except as a happy customer.]
Following Ron Newman's comment about the new Somerville News website, I had a look and poked around. An opinion piece about the diminishing influence of the Davis Sq. Task Force in the community caught my eye. Do any of the folks here who are on the DSTF feel the same as the sentiments expressed in the opinion post?

Join the Somerville Bicycle Committee for the 16th Annual Tour de Somerville, this Saturday, October 18th. We'll meet at 10 am at Seven Hills Park, behind the Holland Street T entrance in Davis Square.
From there, we'll trace the entire boundary of our city, from leafy Alewife Brook and Tufts University to gritty Assembly Square, Inner Belt, and Boynton Yards. Occasionally, we'll cross over into neighboring Cambridge, Arlington, Medford, and Charlestown, to see what the city limits look like from the other side.
The ride will be about 15 miles long, with a rest stop at the Somerville Boys and Girls Club's Blessing of the Bay boathouse on the Mystic River. Redbones will provide refreshments at this stop.
A route map and cue sheet are posted at http://SomervilleBikes.org . In case of rain, we'll postpone the ride to Sunday, October 19, same time and location (and we'll announce that on the web site).
For more information, contact Ron Newman, rnewman@thecia.net , 617-628-8895.
That said, here's an invitation to this year's event:

Does anyone have experience with pest control services (other than getting a cat or a dog)? Any recommendations or warnings?
Thanks.
Residents of Somerville are invited to register for adult coed volleyball tomorrow (Oct 15th) at Winter Hill School Gym from 6:30-8pm. It will be for all levels of play. Level of interest will determine if a league and a schedule of games can be started or if just open nights for pick-up games are needed. Due to the size of gym, the rules will need to accommodate some slight changes.
There will be one or two volleyballs if anyone wishes to stay and bump the ball around. Any costs will be determined after this night. Entrance to gym is located on Sycamore St.
Any questions call the Recreation Office at 617-625-6600 ext. 2990.
The LJ cuts are not working for me today, which is bizarre since i use them all the time. Most recently for my giant roadtrip photos, so i don't think it is photos or photobucket causing the issues. No clue where the formatting errors are being generated. Best of luck with the viewing, and let me know if the issues persist and i'll try a fourth round :)
List of stuff only:
( List of stuf without photos! )
The same paperback book is used for scale in some photos. No making fun of my fluffy reading material during this stressful move time, mmmmmkay? :)
Yes, i know there are formatting errors. Camino is not cooperating with me today. Bad Camino.

Making fun of my camera phone, since my actual camera is 200 miles away, not fair ;)
Email me at this username at gmail dot com today, tomorrow, or Thursday. After Thursday it's all going to Salvation Army, unless you dibs something i can put it on the curb. Due to the holiday our trash day is Saturday this week, so you would have 2 days to get it before it gets taken - that would make me sad, since i'd prefer to donate anything that doesn't get claimed instead of having it end up in the trash.
Contact me. Let's make a deal :)

www.amnesty133.orgThe Burren is always nice to us and its our "home base" every other month. The bar will provide some food and I will have nametags if people want to wear them. I hope to see many of your tomorrow night.
At some point we have to decide where to go in November, so I'm open to suggestions.
Three ways to register:
- Go to your local city or town hall. All of these will be open until 8 pm on Wednesday to accept voter registrations.
- Pick up a mail-in registration form at a local library or post office (and probably some other places to), fill it out, and mail it in. It must be postmarked no later than tomorrow (Wednesday, October 15). The South Station post office is open 24 hours.
- Print out a National Voter Registration Form, fill it in, and mail it in. It must be postmarked no later than tomorrow.
I was reading the NY Times today, and ran across an article about a MA based charity Homes For Our Troops. They remodel exisiting homes and build new homes for returning veterans who have been injured in the war and need adaptations in order to lead more independent lives. The story went on to explain that the federal bennefit for veterans that have been permanently disabled by war injuries is around 60,000, which isn't much when you are trying to build somone a new home with adaptave tech, and that vets rely on agencies like these to fill in the gap. I'd really like to do something to help, and I like to cook and bake, so I thought a bake sale would be a fun way to raise some cash for this organization.
Does anybody know how to organize something like this? I'd love to have a table out in the square, especially right around thanksgiving (I make a mean apple pie), but I don't know what kind of permission I would need. Also, while I love to bake, I would be appreciative of anyone who would be willing to pitch in, either with baked goods or a smiling face, or even an appetite and some change.
any input or feedback you have would be greatly appreciated.
They'd be more useful if 311 worked from cell phones.

From the menu on this site, it looks like mostly Brazilian pastries and sandwiches, but the signage on the building mentioned "Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner," so perhaps they are expanding their fare in this location. I would be psyched to have a real breakfast place within a stone's throw of my house (no offense to the Neighborhood and the Ball Sq., but they are a sliiiight hike).
No, ripping up the trellis in my yard and dumping it, and the plant that was growing on it, on the sidewalk is not funny. No, it is not clever. Congratulations, you made me feel like shit.
Yeah, I heard you last night at 2 am. I even looked out the window to make sure you were just fucking around your car after the bars closed. I'm kicking myself for that too, thanks. I hope that after you sped off you got pulled over for a well deserved DUI.
Who the hell does that? Who the hell comes up with shit like that and who the hell finds it funny? Yeah, you made someone miserable this morning, points for you.
So, to all the people walking along Day St who looked confused as they were walking under a misplaced arbor, I can assure you that it was not my idea.

It's a good week for free films at Tufts. I recommend "Lars and the Real Girl" showing tonight and "Persepolis" showing on Wednesday night.
Tufts Film Series has an extended weekend with "Lars and the Real Girl" Sunday, 10/12 at 8 pm and "Be Kind, Rewind" showing at 4 pm on Monday for Columbus Day. Next weekend, you can see "Step Brothers" and "Wanted".
"Der bewegte Mann" is showing on Monday night and "Le Grand Voyage" on Tuesday, both at Tufts.
A couple of student groups added films at the last minute last week, so keep you eyes on the BFF Calendar or check out Tuftslife.com for last minute additions.

I know there's stuff in the memories and I am looking that over but want some extra info too, so!:
After a month of semi-rough traveling my back/neck/shoulders are a big twisted mess. I need a massage something fierce.
*and*
None of my pants fit! I need a tailor, particularly one decent with designer jeans.
In neither case is cost a huge concern. Being near the red line in camberville would be nice.
Tonight Oxfam Cafe at Tufts University is having a free concert featuring Daniel Francis Doyle , Yellow Fever , and Old Abram Brown . Show starts at 8 and we'll be serving free fair trade coffee as well!
Check out our myspace for more free and cheap shows throughout the semester!
I was going down Thurston Street (near where it starts on Broadway in Winter
Hill) and I saw a lot of shoes, some still in their boxes, and a sign that
said "free". The guy who put them out there said the black ones were special
bike shoes that are designed to attach to a pedal, though there were more
kinds than just those. The shoes were in front of the house just before 67
Thurston (couldn't discern what the actual address of the house was that
they were *right* in front of).

Poll #1276472 2008 Mass. State Election Questions
Open to: All, detailed results viewable to: All
Question 1 - Repeal state income tax
Question 2 - Decriminalize possession of small amounts of marijuana
Question 3 - Ban dog racing
This proposed law would prohibit any dog racing or racing meeting in Massachusetts where any form of betting or wagering on the speed or ability of dogs occurs. The State Racing Commission would be prohibited from accepting or approving any application or request for racing dates for dog racing. Any person violating the proposed law could be required to pay a civil penalty of not less than $20,000 to the Commission. The penalty would be used for the Commission's administrative purposes, subject to appropriation by the state Legislature. All existing parts of the chapter of the state's General Laws concerning dog and horse racing meetings would be interpreted as if they did not refer to dogs. These changes would take effect January 1, 2010. The proposed law states that if any of its parts were declared invalid, the other parts would stay in effect.
WHAT YOUR VOTE WILL DO
A YES VOTE would prohibit dog races on which betting or wagering occurs, effective January 1, 2010.
A NO VOTE would make no change in the laws governing dog racing.
I'm a big fan of the statement of opposition which basically ends with "if you pass this law, we're gonna f-ing sue."

SUMMARY OF QUESTION 1
As required by law, summaries are written by the State Attorney General, and the statements describing the effect of a "yes" or "no" vote are written jointly by the State Attorney General and the Secretary of the Commonwealth.
This proposed law would reduce the state personal income tax rate to 2.65% for all categories of taxable income for the tax year beginning on or after January 1, 2009, and would eliminate the tax for all tax years beginning on or after January 1, 2010. The personal income tax applies to income received or gain realized by individuals and married couples, by estates of deceased persons, by certain trustees and other fiduciaries, by persons who are partners in and receive income from partnerships, by corporate trusts, and by persons who receive income as shareholders of "S corporations" as defined under federal tax law. The proposed law would not affect the tax due on income or gain realized in a tax year beginning before January 1, 2009. The proposed law states that if any of its parts were declared invalid, the other parts would stay in effect.
WHAT YOUR VOTE WILL DO
A YES VOTE would reduce the state personal income tax rate to 2.65% for the tax year beginning on January 1, 2009, and would eliminate the tax for all tax years beginning on or after January 1, 2010.
A NO VOTE would make no change in state income tax laws.
