    Sexy World
... is the name of the rubbish new cartoon I've just finished making.

Click here to watch on my website

Or click here to watch on Newgrounds and vote 5 for it, because all support is appreciated and everything.

    • Clocking in at over seven minutes long, this cartoon is a bit of an epic.
    • It's taken me about ten months to make, although there have been numerous distractions and things. It spent its fair share of time in "production hell" and all that.
    • Despite the prodigious sexiness of this cartoon, I'd guess its content is roughly "PG" rated.
    • I'm aware the sound goes slightly out of synch towards the end. Not sure what's causing this yet. I'm working on it.
    • My next project will be a music video, although I'd probably best remain tight-lipped about the details for now.

    The Nursery
Well, finally, my novel-writing project is at an end. It is a science fiction/fantasy tale (in case you wondered about the "Warren" thing, I have used a pseudonym, to stop my work from being confused with this man's).

The book will be available from online bookstores such as Amazon within the next few weeks (probably by mid-April) and it will also be possible to place an order for it from high street book retailers by quoting the title and ISBN, but in the meantime it’s available now to buy in print or PDF download direct from the publisher.

    See preview page

Support independent publishing: buy this book on Lulu.

I have set up a myspace page to promote the book, which you are all very welcome to visit and add to your friends list if you like, to help spread the word.

Back in September I posted a link to my first Flash movie. It was about a hedgehog and it wasn't very good. I've been away and practiced a bit since, and now have my second movie completed.

Work-safe. Best viewed with sound. About 1 minute 37 seconds long. Sorry to anybody, if I told you I was going to see Killing Miranda tonight, but hopefully this justifies staying in.

    Second attempt
Following the rejection of my manuscript by the first publisher I sent it to, I have just posted a submission to these people, as I was thumbing through a copy of The Writers & Artists Yearbook yesterday evening, found their details and thought they looked vaguely promising.

This company doesn't accept submissions by email, but they will take an unsolicited sample chapter + plot synopsis with a self-addressed return envelope, so that's what I've just sent them (they don't seem to have any particular preferred fiction genre). Unfortunately, as I was printing out the sample chapter yesterday evening, I noticed that half of it was missing; through some stupid accident with the copy and paste controls (probably a few months ago, late at night when I was tired) I seem to have erased 2,000 words from chapter 1. I did manage to restore the missing text, partly from an old backup CD and partly by retyping bits from handwritten notes, so it won't be a problem in the future. However, I strongly suspect the manuscript I sent electronically to the last publisher had this big chunk missing. (sigh) Well done for that Howard - give yourself a lollipop for being special.

Umm, yeah, so I just submitted my manuscript, at long last, to MacMillan New Writing (macmillannewwriting.co.uk). MacMillan's a pretty huge and well-established publisher, but they recently started this new branch to cater for first-time novelists, and they're looking for works of any length or genre, so I thought they'd be worth a go. They also accept entire manuscripts by email, which is something of a rarity at the moment and saves a fortune on recorded delivery postal costs. Maybe that's of use to some of you too, maybe not (?)

According to their site, I can now expect a response in six-ten weeks.... (smiles through gritted teeth)

Earlier today I became aware of a short story competition that I'd like to enter, and thought I'd let you peeps know about it too in case it's of interest.

    http://www.acblack.com/shortstorycompetition

2,000 words maximum and it has to be on the subject of "night" - well, this is [info]creativegawth, after all. The closing date is the end of this month, but I still think I'll give it a stab.

On a mostly unrelated topic, has anybody here ever considered using a psuedonym? I've not had any of my written work published so far, but I've recently begun thinking about using a different name for when I send things off get rejected. I have a famous namesake at Harvard University who's written numerous books - my website picks up about one query every year from confused psychology students who think Dr. Gardner's inexplicably moved to the UK, had a face transplant, grown his hair and taken up illustration/short fic writing, so I'd dread to think what might happen if I ever do make it into print.

So, if you were in my shoes, what would you call yourself? After all, Blackadder III reveals that Jane Austen was in fact a huge Yorkshireman with a beard like a rhodedendron bush, so I guess anything's possible...

    Eat My Shorts.
I recently finished work on a twelve minute animated backdrop-movie to be used by Kreuzdammer at their live shows. With luck (ie. the post office being open today so that I can send them the discs) they might be screening the film at their next gig at the purple turtle, Mornington Crescent, on the 5th of January.

Walt Disney it's not, but here's a very brief snippet )

On a similar topic, I worked on a ten minute sci-fi film about two years ago as a 'runner' (ie. I manufactured a few fake magazines, posters and a life-sized cardboard cut-out of one of the characters as props) for a production company called Retro-Juice. It's called Plastic and, after some delays, it's getting its premier screening at the Kurzon cinema, Soho, on the 15th of this month. I can't vouch for how good the film is, as I've not yet seen any of it, although I'm hoping to be there anyway to find out. I've not been told much about the ticket situation but (to the best of my knowledge right now) you buy them there at the box office. As it's a very short film, I'd imagine it's beeing screened along with a few others.

I've been off work today on yet more sick leave. I don't know whether I've come down with an entirely new cold, or if it's the same one coming back to torment me again because I donated blood last Thursday and went to a couple of parties at the weekend, which probably weakened my immune system. Regardless of the cause though, my staying home today turned out to be a blessing in disguise:

    About fifty minutes ago
I finished the first draft of my novel!!

    (does The Dance of Triumph)

Of course, there is still plenty for me to do here; there's a massive long list of corrections which I need to get through, arrange all the different bits in some sort of order which will make sense to a reader and then proof-read it to look for any problems which I'm not currently aware of (and there's probably a few of those). I still need to find out exactly how long the whole thing is as well, as my crap word processing software doesn't tell me. I'm sure it's over 120,000 though anyway, which is a healthy length and has taken me about twenty months to write.

But in any case... I'm a happy boy right now!

A bit too much time on my hands?
A while ago, my girlfriend bought a novelty ceramic mug, which had lots of little LEDs around its circumference and whenever this mug was picked up it would bleep and the LEDs would all flash in sequence. This was amusing enough for a while but recently the electronics driving this thing went senile and the bleeping/LED flashing switched on by itself and wouldn't shut up.

For more than 24 hours we waited for the batteries to die but when they did not, I was left with no choice but to take the mug outside onto the patio and destroy it. The ceramic part was smashed to smithereens but the electronic innards survived the trauma and I disconnected the batteries to finally shut it up. I had a strange feeling that the mug's innards might one day be useful and they've been sitting by the computer ever since.

    * For the benefit of anybody reading this at MI5 - it's NOT a bomb! *

This is the idea I came up with earlier today while having a bored daydream. Basically, you open up the book and it bleeps and flashes at you. I used to make weird and pointless objects like this during a period of unemployment in 2001 - it would be quite fun to make and I think I might have a go sometime in the next few weeks. The crucial ingredient I'm missing though is a small (about 4 x 6") book, reasonably thick and preferrably with a leather or leather-effect cover. A Giddeon's Bible or similar would be perfect. Does anybody have anything like this knocking about that they don't want any more? Unfortunately there are no charity shops near to where I work, so I don't know how I can obtain such a book easily.

    it's a con!

WikiPedia has this to say about Conworlds and the like.

I've been having a look at the WikiCities website, and found a few possile resources for people wanting to construct worlds, though most of these are pretty undeveloped at the moment. I'll put up some links to more complete websites giving guidance on creating backdrops for your stories at some point. Remmeber, it's not just fantasy and SF that need thought about the world around them, some of the same thought processes can come in useful when you're thinking about how contemporary characters would interact with the real world.

    Howdy,
First posting here. This a little story I wrote not so long ago, which is a kind of parody on the one thing that nobody had heard of prior to the internet - Slash fiction. There's also a few digs at a certain series of hollywood fantasy films, the latest of which might be out at cinemas very soon!
Needless to say, there's some rude bits, so it's not exactly work safe, but it's not exactly slash fiction itself. Read the thing and you'll get the jist of it! Click below if you're somewhere where no one can look over your shoulder-

If I rewrite this at some point I'll have to insert some mention of that lake before the phaedon gets pushed into it... Be easy on me, I'm doing this to get into the habit of writing, rather than create great literature. About time I did something with this community - reckon I'll write a story (or something). I read recently that anyone who wants to be a writer should set themselves a target number of words to write every day and stick to it. The number posited was 400, though if this is found too easy then the target should be upped. I have no idea what I'm going to write, but I shall try to write something every day. Feel free to tell me what's wrong, but don't just tell me it sucks, tell me why it sucks.

    my first attempt )

I suggest anyone who wants to (okay, there's only four of us so far) has a go at just writing every day (though put 'em behind an <lj-cut> if you post them).
