Many a craft ;)
Hello all!
Here are some things that I have been working on & putting off taking pictures of ;)

I've been saving up long strips of fabric that were left over from my sewing ~ we are talking about the width of a piece of yarn (less than 1/2 inch). I tried to crochet them before but didn't like the mixed colors together, so this time I saved some more & broke them up into 3 groups. Here's the first one ~

I just made these to hold things in the work room on the closet/shelves, so nothing too fancy. This one was more of the size I wanted~ When I work I push the bumps to the inside, which can look good on its own. The second pic is with the bumps out ~ I like this basket better this way ;)

That first pair is mine ;) Made from Scrabble Tiles drilled on the corners. I love the beads I found ~ cream colored with a darker strip running through so they almost look like wood too! The earrings below say "EGO" & "ID" ~ I made them for two friends. They are very light too, which I wondered about.

These are nothing special, but my first head pins, so very fun ;)

BOOKBINDING~
I would like to use some of my small fabric scraps to cover books. Before I was looking for cheap blank books to cover, but now I'm wondering if it would be cheaper to make the whole book myself. What do you think? What is your favorite/easy binding method?

GLUING FABRICS~
I am also wondering the best way to do the fabric ~ I glued it down & coated it like decoupage, just to see. The picture above is a test project on a book I'm already using. The top of the fabric was very rough though, so I would like something good to coat it with. Any ideas? I threw some packing tape over it just to seal it & cover the roughness, but not a good solution for real.

SCULPEY ~
And one last question... I just bought some Sculpey to test out & saw "Fimo" & "Primo" brands at the store. I'm thinking the Fimo is not as durable, but other than that I have no idea what the difference is between the three brands. Fimo has some really nice glittery clays ~ any experiance with these?
Thanks so much!!

Wow, I don't usually comment, but those baskets are amazing. Could you maybe describe how you did them?

Umm... the strips are about 3/8" inch (smaller than 1/2, larger than 1/4 for an idea)... I tied the strips together on the ends, leaving a little over an inch & then just used it like yarn. I made a circle for the bottom & then worked upward evenly.

Every time you get to a knot, try to catch the ends of the strip inside of your next crochet as much as you can. Push knots & anything else to the back... It does not really matter if you catch the ends because the threads coming off the strips will tangle & keep this from unraveling if anything happened (trust me, it's hard to take out your work!)

Some of the bumps on the inside of the basket are not actually from the knot, but the knot will stop the strip from going through the crochet & leave a little extra fabric hanging off the back. I think I used a single crochet, but I might have made the thing up! ;) and a pretty large hook.

I like your crochet baskets, the one with the "bumps" on the outside is my fav.

I like the fabrics on your book. I was scrolling through and I thought you designed a face. The red and white circular patterned piece (midway down the spine) looks likes an eye, like somebody is peeking through; and the orange and brown make what looks like a chin.

Cool ;) I am thinking about planning it more & making images with the colors later on ~ now I must just figure out what I am doing!

I love the earrings! The I.Q. ones are very cute, and I especially love the head pin ones. Did you use a tutorial, or just make them up as you went? What kinds of materials did you use?

For the ones with the spirals on them I just made them up as I went along. The pin is beaded with dark iredescent seed beads in two sizes. I also used a black glass bead just below the spiral & inside of the spiral. The spiral was bought like that & keeps its shape ~ I don't remember whereI bought it, sorry! It took me a bit to figure out, but you can pop your bead inside of there from the side & then work the pin through the holes. Pretty fun to play with.

i just bought the big white hunk of sculpey and it's much softer than fimo. there is another sculpey that is tan that looks more a bit more plyable. fimo is nice but you have to condition it really well. i've never used primo.

what kind of drill do you have?

Ah, I should have mentioned that it was actually "Fimo Soft" & it was much softer than the Sculpey clay.

The drill is just a basic one of my hubby's ~ we just got a really small bit for it. We also have a Dremel, but no attachments yet.

You really don't like to throw things away huh? :-) Just kidding. Way to go on not wasting anything. And the baskets are amazing.

Hehe ~ I'm not anal I swear!
It's just because I sew all day for a living, so I end up with lots & lots & even more scraps! Since I make patchwork I use a lot of if & try to throw out as little as I can... because I would be making a lot of trash!!

And now that I'm in this community I feel like I'm throwing out a lot less of everything!! Who knew you could make vases from old lightbulbs?? ;)

Did you get those tiles out of an actual game, or do they sell replacement tiles? I need to know 'cuz I'm planning on making my fiance a gaming table with a scrabble board, and don't want to have to buy the game to get the tiles!

I bought them off of eBay ~ so not sure where they got them from. You can buy multiple sets at a time on there. Or you could find one at the Thrift Store & it would probably cost about the same.

Glorious!!!! Absolutly Glorious!!!!
*amazed*

Out of the 3 clays, Premo is considered the best, then Fimo, then sculpty in durability after baking. Sculpty can be down right brittle for thinner projects.

However, It's the reverse order if you want to talk about workability. It's harder to get Primo to a workable state than the others, but it's still worth it.

The key is to mix what you like with the good Premo. Or mix with the fimo....just don't trust sculpty by it's self.....

Love your fabric baskets. Nice use of colors!

Reminds me of all the plastic baskets that I have made over the years.

Everything is really nice. I'm kind of awed, actually. :)

I've dabbled in bookbinding and I would say that the running stitch is probably the best in terms of balancing ease and looks. There's also coptic stitch (more complicated) and what I think is called stab binding which is easier but doesn't look as nice. Good luck!
