I am *SO* proud!! ~A Shirt~
This is my first attempt at screen printing a shirt, and I love it!!
It is a picture of Robby the Robot from the old Sci-Fi movies ;)

The only part that messed up was on the letter "Y" there is a glob... I didn't run the ink over the letters well enough the first time, so I just went ahead & laid it back down & did more over that spot. I knew it was risky, but figured I would either fix it or not have lost anything. I even like the little blob... like the shirt has its own battle-scar from all of the trouble it took me to get all the supplies! (Stupid Hobby-Lobby)

I know I had a lot of questions when I was getting all of my supplies together, so, after much reading, here is what I decided to use~

I mainly used this tutorial for the whole thing, except I took the advice of a few people & did not stipple the paint on with a brush. I used an old phone card, which worked wonderfully & I think it was easier to handle than an actual squeegee or more official tool would be.

I did use the embroidery hoop, but I think I will build my own screens like CraftyDame talks about in this and this post. I liked the idea of using the hoop for multiple projects, but it was hard to keep the fabric taut... I think that is actually what happened to my "Y" since there were a lot of ripples down there. I plan on using the light-sentsitive emulsion as well, but wanted to try the cheap technique first.

I used Organza fabric (the tutorial mentions tulle, but don't get the kind with wide holes, like bridal tulle)... and Mod Podge to block out the negative space. I bought the Ceramcoat Textile Medium mixed with their Acrylic Paint. I have not heat set it yet, but don't think that will be a problem.
I like using the Textile Medium & am planning on buying some white paint to mix with it too ;) Oh, and I got the shirt on clearance at Target $4!

For the picture, I found an old toy illustration that I liked the position of him the most & then used my photo program to rotate & reposition the limbs a little. I like his arms reaching up, like he's asking for a hug! ;) I printed this out the size I wanted it & used it to trace a general outline. I wanted to do most of the drawing myself so I re-drew it with a sharpie & stylized it more ~ making sure to use thick lines.

My only questions ~ I saved the left over Medium & paint I had mixed in a little tupperware that I have used for acrylic paints before. I am wondering if anyone knows how well this keeps? I guess I will just see how smooth it is when I pull it out again, but it was all pretty cheap so I don't really mind if it doesn't keep.

wow. that's a great job. i've used a real silk screen, and the actual photo process, and it took me about twenty different tries to get it as good as your shirt. i'm jelous.

and robots, rock it.

Awww ~ thanks!! I read & re-read all of the tutorials & asked questions too before I touched the thing, so I think that helped me out a lot. And a life-time of drawing & crafting doesn't hurt ;) ~I can't wait to get the emulsion!!

oh! ps, with a question:
what kind of mod podge did you use? when (if) you washed the screen, did it compromise the glue? i like the idea of using acrylics with the medium for screen printing... did you use regular tubed acrylics or fluid acrylics? was the result thick/stiff or not unlike regular screenprinted decals?

sorry for my questions, but your fabulous results made me what to try this even more. :)

Oh! I should have mentioned something out the Mod Podge actually ~
I asked about this before I tried it, & got some mixed responses, but I had already bought a big bottle of it so I used it. I would not recommend buying it for this purpose, but if you already have some, it seems to work fine. The glue does turn cloudy when you are cleaning it, but it looks like it will just dry again & not mess anything up. You probably want to use something water resistant if you really think you will be using the screen alot.

The paint I used was just the cheap kind you get at the craft store in the little bottles. I've only used (tubed) artist's acrylics before, and these acrylics seemed more liquidy, but I don't know if they are "fluid" or not... I think that is what you were asking ;)

... I am just about to heat set it ~ Right now it is not very thick at all & is flexible. Pretty much like you would buy in the store! I don't think the heat will change it, but just keeps it from washing out of the fabric.

i'm a fan of mod podge. i assume you used the regular kind (matte or gloss). i ponder now how outdoor mod podge would work since it's meant to be waether worthy and thus water proof.

those are usually considered liquid acrylics. i currently have tubed (a little more thicker) acrylics which i use for painting. their a little more pricey so i'll have to see about getting me some cheap bottle acrylic paint so's not to have to sacrifice my painting supply :)

let us know how the heat setting goes. i may just end up using acrylics+additive for my future silkscreening ventures, instead of buying special ink right off the bat.

ps yet again: these acrylic... would you recommend using them (sans additive) for regular paper (or similar) surfaces using this technique... if you can say right now?

That is what I figured you meant about the acrylics... I actually did an acrylic painting exhibit in college, so I have a ton of the tubes! Had just never heard the term ;)

The heat setting just involved ironing it for 20 seconds, or whatever the back of you bottle tells you. Did not seem to change it a bit & I wore it last night.

I actually tried doing a text print on a peice of paper before I did it on the shirt... just to make sure I didn't have any huge problems with the screen before I used it on the shirt... and it did help me get comfortable with the process. I just used the paint mixed with textile medium because I was about to do the shirt, and the print was on cardstock. It was not horrible, but the lines all bled a little bit & are not crisp. I didn't try it on paper without the medium mixed in, but it seems like it would work better if not as liquid?

What is it if not a stencil? I think it's a stencil and that's what matters. I don't think you have to join. Your shirt is a metric tonne better than most of the dross up there. Silkscreens are still stencils in my opinion. Go and see, and then decide whether you should post it, but I think you should post it :-)

This might sound odd, but if you can tell me how to post it there then I'll do it ~ the only way I could figure out how to add to craftgrll was to click on the "livejournal userinfo" & then post from there. I don't actually keep a journal, I just post it straight onto here.

I couldn't find that on the stencilry page ~
Thanks!!

You have to join on the userinfo page, where it says 'click here to join' or what have you, don't worry, they don't need an application or owt, then when you write the entry in your own journal where it says 'update to' at the bottom and it says your name, scroll down that list to '_stencilry' and you will update to them instead of your journal. Or check the Livejournal FAQs. Blech, this is why I'm no good at tutorials.

Thank you so much for helping!! Success ~ I have posted it! And it was a wonderful tutorial ;)

I was just worried about joining because I thought it would automatically stick all of the entries on my friends page, but it gave you the option not to, so I went ahead & joined some other places!

I was wondering if you'd found out how well the paint and medium kept in a container together? I'm using golden stuff which is kind of expensive!

The container I was keeping it in is not thouroughly air-tight, but it was fine to use later. If you keep it in a good paint container I'm sure it will be fine ~ but if you are worried about ruining the paint, just mix a small amount before you use it. That is what I normally do... You can always mix a little more if you run out.
