Dear People Who Make MoodThemes and Use My Instructions,

Do me a favour. You know that I have no problem with you linking to my instructions post or using my instructions in your own post, but please remember to put the adminconsolescode.txt file in your zip. When you don't, I get comments asking where it is, as though I made the theme myself. You put hours into making your mood theme, so just take 30 seconds and include the file in your zip file before you upload it.

The file you need to include is here. Right-click and save the file, or you'll be led to it on a webpage, and then you won't be able to save it. But before you add it to your zip, check two things:

1) Is the file format right? I save all my mood themes as .jpg, but if yours is saved as .gif, do a find/replace to replace the .jpg to .gif. Otherwise anyone who tries to use my admin console codes with your .gif theme will just get broken images, and then I get the questions.

2) Change the "80 40" to whatever the widthxheight is on your mood theme. Do NOT skip this step. I tell everyone to check that the width and height in their codes is correct before uploading, but most people don't. If they don't, your nice mood theme that looks like this for you:

Could end up looking like this on someone's lj:

Or worse, this:

Why is this? It's because LJ doesn't care what size your mood theme actually is, all it cares about is the size that you tell it in your codes. Save yourself some cringing when you see your work looking like crap and double-check that the numbers at the end of each line in the admin console are correct.

If you have any questions about uploading your own theme, please don't hesitate to ask. If anyone would like a step-by-step tutorial on how to upload your theme, just let me know.

Wait, I don't get it. What does 80 40 mean?

That's the size in pixels. 80 pixels wide and 40 pixels high.

They're the dimensions of the moodicon -- if you don't change them to be the dimensions of your moodicon, the image will be distorted, because LJ will think it's 80x40 even if it's, say, 100x60.

Thank you so, so much for putting up this info about the adminconsolescode.txt file. I was directed here by someone who made a moodtheme and they did leave out the file. Why don't people listen/read instructions?

Anyway, thanks again!

Fabulous tips, thanks! I was just wondering since I'm new to making moodthemes; which site do you upload your folder to? Because I've looked around and every site seems to only be able to upload files, not folders with files inside like the moodtheme pictures and the adminconsolescode.txt file. Would you do it with a DeviantArt account? Please help I'm really stuck. :)

Hello! I'd just like to say thanks for all these instructions - I was just uploading the first moodtheme I've made from scratch and tearing my hair out because it wouldn't work - turned out it was one little thing I hadn't done (changed the .jpgs to .pngs). So thank you so much for this, and for your tutorials on installation too, it's made the whole process totally painless. You rock! :)

I'm in the middle of making a mood theme myself and I just wanted to let you know that once I'll post it, I'm gonna link to both your insturction posts simply because they are very well written and the explanations are easy enough for everybody to understand. So thank you for providing the posts to everybody - and I already made sure to save the adminconsolecodes.txt with my finished moods. Thank you for sharing this too. You rock! ♥

Yes, you have the best instructions bar none. I tried writing my own and 1. it sounded like a plagarized version of yours and 2. it was more confusing.

So I've decided to blatantly link to your instructions. Yes I have and I want to thank you for being so generous in allowing us to do so.

I'll be pimping your site all over mine because I think you have the most well organized informative and skillfully done mood site and I have no qualms about admitting that I am not the organizational brains behind my operation. I say why reinvent the wheel?

I hope you don't mind.

I have a question. I've read your help on making your own mood theme and think I am set. I just have one question. How does this number relate to the name?

moodtheme_setpic 12345 90 http://www.hosting.com/accomplished.jpg 80 40

There are 132 different moods, so what do I do if I want to add more moods to my theme. Can I just add in more numbers and moods. Say like 133, wanko. Or will that confuse LJ? I hope that I'm making myself clear. I'm trying to incorporate some specific fandom related moods. Any help would be appreciated.

The number is the ID number for each mood, it's how LJ knows which mood the image URL corresponds to, since it doesn't read the text of the URL in order to label the mood name. Because of this you can't add any more moods, if you were to add a 133rd number it would just give an error message. LJ has 132 moods, and I'm afraid they're the only ones you can specify a mood image for. You can change the name of an existing image when you post, to make say "angry" "furious", but it can't have its own specific image.
