Fandom: NCIS Pairing: Jethro Gibbs/Tony DiNozzo Length: both about midlength Author on LJ: sperrywinkAuthor Website:Unknown Why this must be read:I love good dialogue. I especially love dialogue that sounds true to the characters. This story has it. And it's got a good , slow build-up that seems true to characters. I love Tony's uncertainty and Gibbs' reaction to it. Classic and the sequel, Classic 2: Tony Wakes Up Questioning His Orientation

Fandom: Buffy the Vampire Slayer Pairing: Buffy/Xander Author on LJ: nemo_gravisAuthor Website: NemosityWhy this must be read: Nemo is one of the few of us who write Buffy/Xander and he doesn't pull his punches either. These stories are not light and fluffy. His Buffy and Xander are both flawed, and who wouldn't be after all they've been through. In the first story, Buffy meets Xander in Cairo, they get drunk and things happen. The second story is three years later and they are both still deeply affected by that night in Cairo. The second story is longer with more plot, but both are deeply insightful into the minds of Buffy and Xander. Lots of angst, lots of revelations, no shortage of sex (very explicit in places) and the possibility of future happiness. Neither of these are to be missed if you love Buffy/Xander. Title: ColorsAuthor: AnarossFandom: Firefly/Buffy the Vampire Slayer Pairing: Spike/Zoe Washburn (mentions Spike/Buffy and Zoe/Wash) Author on LJ: None that I know of Author Website: Here at Just Rewards Why this must be read: Anytime you put someone from a show that is set in this time into the Firefly universe you have to tread very carefully. When I initially came across this story I was willing to buy that Spike might have survived to five hundred years in the future. But that's not the case here. I won't spoil how he gets there, but he arrives after the events of the movie and fits in really well. Spike is hurting, as is Zoe and they form an unusual bond. Now I love Zoe/Wash so it takes a superb author to make me buy her with anyone else and Anaross is that author. There are two endings, I prefer the more serious one, but keep reading for the epilogue that brings everything full circle once again. This story is everything one could hope for in a good cross over.

Title: them downtown boys sure talk gritty by Victoria P. Pairing: Kaylee Frye/Dean Winchester Length: 1955 words Author on LJ: musesfoolAuthor Website: AchromaticWhy this must be read: musesfool is a great writer, and Dean and Kaylee are perfectly in character. It's fun, it's flirty and it's hot. Both fandoms lend themselves well to angst, which I love, but sometimes it's nice to see our favorite characters enjoying themselves for once. This is a great fic, when one is in the mood for a sexy pick-me-up. "She's a beauty," Kaylee says, running a hand over the perfectly kept engine, gleaming in the low light of the room. The Impala is as old as Serenity, but sleeker, built for speed and power more than salvage or smuggling, and Dean keeps her in beautiful shape.them downtown boys sure talk gritty

Title: Emerald City by nilahasi Pairing: Daniel Jackson/Anthony DiNozzo Author on LJ: nilahasi Author Website:unknown Why this must be read:I love plot. Don't get me wrong; I love PWPs just as much as the next fangirl, but good plot makes my toes curl. I like this story because I love the plot. It does read like an episode, but with all the good stuff - the slashy bits - thrown in. I love this Daniel and this Tony and I love them together. I would love to read a sequel, but I like the possibilities left open by the ending. Very enjoyable read. Emerald City

Title: What The Ducklings Did On Their Summer Vacation by Roga Pairing: None Length: ~6600 word Author on LJ: rogaAuthor Website: List of ficsWhy this must be read: The end of season 3 left Chase, Cameron, and Foreman jobless and what better way to employ them than sending them off to Atlantis? That's surely a better plan then what happened in the show at least. This fic has plenty of giggle moments while keeping everyone nicely in character and the characters from the two shows play nicely off each other in roga's hands. Title: Star-Crossed by Belladonna Pairing: Chris Larabee/Martin Fitzgerald (Vin Tanner) Author on LJ: belladonna_sw Author Website: Belladonna's page on WWOMB Why this must be read:
This was the story that got me into Mag7 fiction. Belladonna is a great author who brings both fandoms together through an undercover assignment of Martin's. We get the family aspect of both the Mag 7 and the WaT teams, as well as some humor, angst, a suprise cameo from another fandom, and a twist at the end. Buck snickered and Ezra and Danny looked at him. “What’s so funny?”
“I get a kick outta the way Malone says ‘Martin’. You can hear the New York accent, plain as day,” he shrugged.
Ezra shook his head, “Simple things for simple minds.”
“Bite me, Ez,” Buck replied succinctly.
“How do you guys ever get any work done?” Danny asked, honestly curious.
Chris snorted. “Whips and chains, usually.”
Vivian laughed out loud, her brown eyes dancing. “Now, why am I not surprised.”
“Hey, we’re not that bad,” Buck protested. Ezra rolled his eyes at the patent untruth in that statement.
With an eyebrow raised, Chris challenged, “Oh yeah? What about filling up my office with blown up condoms?” Danny snickered as Vin giggled. “Or how about the time you and J.D. tied all of the beer cans from my trash to the back of my pickup? Or the time Ezra hired the stripper to come into the office for my birthday, the same day that the Judge showed up?”

Title: A Ring in the Black Sea by basingstoke Pairing: Jack/Teyla Length: ~6600 words Author on LJ: basingstokeAuthor's Website: snogging puppets Why this must be read:
I must admit I'm not really an SGA fan, but I absolutely adore this story. The backstory posited for Jack (this was written well before Adam, etc.) is fascinating, sad and poignant all at once: "No. There isn't a gate where I come from. The Wraith never found my people. We found our own reasons to kill each other," he said, his mouth twisting. "I think they must all be dead. Even if they're not, it's not worth going back there. But the military got me off that planet, and I found a new place. New people--that I loved. Dearly," Jack said. He let out his breath and smoothed water across his face with both hands. It was a gesture of grieving on Alaeon, bringing the salt water to your face to mix with the tears that you shed. The waters at Alaeon were vast and shallow, warm and salty, threaded through with fingers of land. On the land, people from all worlds had built benches, cairns, simple piles of stone or steel or plastic. Clothing, weapons, all the trappings of your people were left on the land when you took the water. In the water, you were nameless. In the waters of Alaeon, the tears of all the Pegasus galaxy mingled. If you found you could not cry, all of Pegasus would cry for you.
The pairing between Jack and Teyla isn't a "relationship" or a romance so much as a brief encounter, but one that has a long-lasting impact on both of them. And in typical basingstoke fashion, there are moments in this story where you will laugh out loud, because she captures the characters' voices brilliantly and brings out their lighter sides so well. Crack Van Collision, a.k.a. cross-over day. Title: Moving On, by Astolat Pairing: Superman/Lex Luthor Author on LJ: astolatAuthor Website: http://www.intimations.org/Size: 19,100 words Why this must be read: Well, if you want to know that, then you'll enjoy reading this wry excerpt: Lex heard the impact from his office: the windows of the penthouse shattering on the other side of the building. "I'll have to call you back, Jensen," he said, and hung up on his call.
He poured Scotch for himself, a glass of fresh orange juice for Clark, and leaned back against the desk to wait, trying not to look too hard at his feelings. LexCorp had smashed past Wal-Mart and become the biggest corporation in the world five months ago when the new regenerative drugs cleared FDA approval and the stealth fighter contract came through the same week, setting off a stock-buying frenzy that had made his assistant's assistant a millionaire and the executives all billionaires. He'd smiled and drunk champagne with the board, shook his father's hand and looked at the baffled spite in his eyes, and gone to bed with the amazingly uninhibited activist from Greenpeace who'd crashed the party to throw oil into the punch. Afterwards he'd lain on his back staring at the ceiling and felt nothing: no excitement, no thrill.
He'd given away two and a half billion dollars in the last week alone, and the month was going to end up in the black anyway. One of his think tank people had come up with the idea of building an artificial archipelago in the South Pacific and declaring it a new nation under LexCorp governance, inviting people to become citizens, just to have something to do with the money. They'd bought a couple of islands to get started and already had a waiting list.
He owned five governors, twelve senators, thirty congressmen, and some ridiculous number of local politicians, not to mention most of the greatest city in the world. He had no children and five divorces and one alien enemy, and only the last one of those stirred any emotion in him at all anymore.
He didn't even know what had provoked Clark this time; there wasn't much going on. Nowadays he didn't break the law so much as he told his people what he wanted and they had the laws subtly changed to allow him to do it. He hadn't had anyone killed in years; people didn't stand up to him anymore. He'd been debating whether to run for president or throw it all away and turn costumed supervillain; or possibly both in that order. For all he knew, Clark was high on red kryptonite and coming here to kill him, and all Lex could feel was a glittering, sparkling thirst for something to happen.
The doors peeled themselves back and away, the haze of smoke and debris in the hallway cleared and a woman stepped into the office: six feet tall, red hair rioting over her shoulders, with the inhuman beauty of a supermodel after image manipulation except for the thin clinging film of grey dust on her skin and a trickle of blood down her arm.
"You're not who I was expecting," Lex said, contemplating her. He felt alert, alive. He thought he could taste Clark in this, two steps removed or less; and if not, at least a challenge, something worth caring about.
"I am Maxima of Almerac," she said, "and your defenses are pathetic. They could never have kept out Kal-El."
Lex smiled. He knew who she was. "They're not meant to," he said. "Can I offer you a drink?"_______________________ This is simply a magnificent example of Crack Fic - you can't wait to see what happens. Luthor's a suave sucker who gratifyingly gets his way, no matter that he peeves the Justice League by *ahem* getting his man - any time he wants. A-a-a-a-and, there are so many chances to imagine lush love scenes along the way. Fine cracktastic yum. {Extras: mutecornett's printable lex luthor paper dolls featuring Lex's Galactic Get-ups.} Moving On, by Astolat

Title: Full of Secrets by Jennifer-Oksana Pairing: Mulder/Scully Author on LJ: n/a Author Website: web archived or Gossamer listingWhy this must be read:This fantastic crossover follows Mulder and Scully after their first case together in 1992. They are assigned to a murder case in Twin Peaks, WA, that may relate to the 1989 Laura Palmer case. Even Dale Cooper is a suspect. In tone, this is more "Twin Peaks" than "The X-Files" - or it's "The X-Files" on one of Darin Morgan's really good days. Hilarious and even sexy, this is definitely worth your time, even if you're only familiar with one show or the other. Full of Secrets (or alternative Gossamer links, part one and two)

Fandom: DUE SOUTH Pairing: Benton Fraser/Ray Kowalski, Ray Kowalski/OMC Length: ~10,000 words Author on LJ: sisterofdreamAuthor Website: none Why this must be read: Because it's an encapsulated history of punk music in Chicago. sisterofdream is an extremely talented writer who brings Ray and Fraser to life with all of their little quirks and idiosyncrasies. She gives us a Ray who is a perfectly capable cop without Fraser, who still has skills for undercover work, who is competent. At the same time, she shows us an insecure and jealous Fraser, one who doesn't know how to approach Ray, who doesn't know how to deal with his feelings. Watching these two fight for what they want, trying to reach an unspoken accommodation feels very real and true to the characters. In addition, sisterofdream has created a cast of wonderful characters that add life and color to the story. Add in a detailed landscape of Chicago clubs and you've got an throughly enjoyable story. The narration style and the way the characters talk is both perfectly in character for both Supernatural and Pushing Daisies. Because I've been waiting for this crossover ever since I first saw Pushing Daisies. Because this would be the perfect way for Dean to get out of the deal. Dean and Sam in this are exactly as we see them in the show, Dean's scared but accepting, and Sam will try anything to save his big brother. Fandom: TORCHWOOD Pairing: mostly gen, a bit of Jack/Ianto Length: novella-ish Author on LJ: ninjasnanoAuthor's Website: none listed Why this must be read:
The team's wild goose chase to the Himalayas is great fodder for a story, and Kingdom of Air takes full advantage of it. The detail is extraordinary, and Ianto's POV really shines. His character has never felt more capable and well-drawn. A prologue, five parts and an epilogue: Kingdom of Air.

Apologies for the late start! I'm Apathy, and I'll be driving the van for Alan Moore's Watchmen, the comic book series that redefined the superhero genre. You may recognise Alan Moore from such comics-turned-films as V for Vendetta, The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, and From Hell, although he probably wishes you didn't. Sadly, with the exception of V for Vendetta, adaptations of his work don't have a great track record. With the Watchmen movie slated for release in March 2009, now is a great time to get into the original comic, so that you, too, can authoritatively bitch and moan about the movie when it comes out. (Although it's possible that it won't suck. Here's hoping.) In all seriousness, though: it is a fantastic and haunting read, and I cannot recommend it highly enough. Anyway, on to the overview! It's 1985, and the world is on the brink of nuclear war. When former masked crime-fighters start turning up dead, one of their old teammates begins the search for answers. However, this is more than just some vendetta against old superheroes.... ( Who watches the Watchmen? )
