New, but full of advice anyway
I'm new to this community... I barely know how to sew a seam. But I do quilt, so I can do a lot of very accurate seams. I figure I could do a corset. I should have Simplicity's easy Civil War corset 9769 pattern in my mailbox soon, I've bought pale green cotton duck fabric, and I'll order bones once I have the muslin finished so I know the lengths.
I started by reading everything in the community from the beginning. While I did that, noticed a few question on binding: what bias is, how to make it, how to go around corners neatly, etc. Those I can answer.
You can find out a lot about binding on quilting sites. It's how quilts are finished, and there are lots of obsessive quilters out there. This site has an explanation of straight grain vs. bias binding, how much binding you can make from a certain amount of yardage, and how to make continuous bias binding. This one has some of that, and also shows you how to miter corners while binding.
Hope this helps!
