Just a quick post to ask if anyone would be able to answer my question.

I found this picture and also this one, of a pair of Indian Rose jeans. It's maybe difficult to tell from the picture but do you guys think these have maybe been overdyed with a light beige/sand colour? Or could it just be the lighting?

I've found a pair of grey jeans that I think are exactly like this - same soft-looking fabric and shape - but they're just plain grey, and I'm wondering if dying them with a beige colour would have this effect, or just end up changing the entire colour of the jeans.

I got this dress a year ago for christmas
and it just sort of took a place in the back of my closet.
I've never worn it because theres something about it
I'm not too keen on it.

It's navy blue
and a sort of strechy fabric,
except for the belt/sash which is satin.

Any ideas for alterations/deconstructions?
or should I just get rid of it?

Ideas? )

adjustable dress

This dress can be worn MANY different ways, but I like it best this way, or as a skirt (not pictured). It ties in the back!

I wanted the Le Sac dress from American Apparel but didnt want to spend $40 on it... So I made a similar version, and adjested the straps differently than they have pictures on the website

As soon as I can, I'll post a pic of my latest work, but I had to tell about it!! My son is at an Anime convention this weekend, and wanted a costume. He chose a doable one, a pilot from the DAIguard anime.

Following a picture he printed out for me, I started by getting a gray long sleeve sweatshirt and pants from a local thrift. I bought yellow and black ribbons in various widths and doubleback fabric tape from the fabric store. I used the tape and ribbons to make the bands of color around the sleeves and torso, and the tape made it easy! Next I bought a black T-shirt at the thrift, cut off the short sleeves and stitched them to the tops of the original sleeves. Next, I made 'elbow pads' and a 'pocket' from white felt, and used the tape again to attach them. I used a black permanent marker to draw black 'stitch' lines on them. I used a red permanent marker to make the number 1 on the chest. All along, I struggled to figure out how I could make a collar for the top. I got an idea; I stitched shut one of the pants pockets, then cut off the material inside. I cut it into strips and was able to get enough to fashion a collar and attach it. I drew more black 'stitch' lines on the collar and shoulders, added black felt details to the collar and a velcro closure. Done!!

My son is thrilled with how it looks, and I'm proud of figuring it all out!!

80's trends

Hi!  I was just leafing through fall fashion mags.....(prob my fave thing to do most days!) and was reading about the new trend toward  80's styles, colors, etc again.  Whoda thunk it?
Well I was going thru some older clothes of my daughter's to put on ebay, and found this shirt......It was not from the 80's but it is  inspired by the 80's.  It is more PUNK genre, really, but the basic style is very 80's.  It got me thinking .  .......IT  took a basic  off the shoulder shirt...could be sweat shirt, baseball jersey type, tee shirt, whatever....this was 3/4 sleeves.....and added two little mesh straps that looked like there was a mesh tank

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=220274463041&ssPageName=STRK:MESE:IT&ih=012nderneath

This would be so easy to replicate.   I have included a link to my auction so you  can see the shirt....I did not make it....but I might try to...The mesh color-coordinated with the design on the shirt.  All we need now are some scrunchies.........

Hoodies

I just wondered if anyone had any interesting ways of decorating a basic hooded sweat top? I don't want it to be plain and boring, I've already thought of tie-dye, perhaps knitting some bright i-cord and threading it through the hood, but I really can't think of anything else...!? Ideas anyone? Thanks in advance!

Hi everyone, I'm new to LiveJournal and am looking to make some friends and get some tips. I love wearing lolita fashion and am a beginner in sewing, hoping to make and sell original clothes some day. I love to combine lolita with rockabilly and diy kitsch style fashion- turning vintage and retro prints (like pokemon bedsheets and super mario fabric) into lolita-style jumperskirts and accessories.

I can't wait to start talking and making friends, and I hope to receive plenty of feedback and criticism- I still have a lot to learn! ^_^

Yay! Finished something!

I made a t-shirt quilt out of my high school t-shirts, an old blanket, and some plaid fabric my mom found somewhere.  I tried putting the picture below the cut, but I'm not very successful.  Help?

I had some before/middle pictures, but my camera ate them.  Along with pictures from two different weddings......   My sewing machine really didn't like the bias tape, but I plowed through.

A question for all you wise ones out there.  I have a shirt that I really want to do some shirring to.  I have elastic thread but I'm not sure where that goes on the sewing machine.  My machine is kinda old and pretty simple, so I pretty much have two options: the top or bottom.  Help?

Hey guys!
I was wondering if anyone knew the measurement of grading between different sizes of clothing... or if you knew where to get information from.

Thanks

The Dress

Okay, ladies, I've got a hypothetical situation for you. If I were to buy this dress and some blue dye, combining the two would technically make a light green dress, right? I love the flow of that dress, but hate the color. The other pattern is hideous as well. I'd also add some sleeves and a higher neckline, but that should be the fun part.

What do you think? I'm pretty sure it's possible, considering it's a cotton dress, but I'd like a second opinion. I realize this would be easy to just sew myself (make the top, then gather the yards of flowy cotton as I sew to make a ruched look, then sew on the ruffle) but I'm curious about the dye job itself.

Fall Fashion textures a thrift shopper's dream

Hi!  I haven't posted in forever!  I was just thumbing through my new copy of Harper's Bazaar and thinking about the new textures for fall.  I've seen a lot of heavy,  ornate brocade type fabric that almost    looks like upholstery fabric.  My 19-year old  daughter  calls it Jackie-O Fabric, and she wants a Beige-oatmeal colored skirt.  We thrift-shop surgeons can have so much fun shopping and redoing these older pieces or even using swatches of upholstery fabric you find in a box.  I have a skirt tutorial on   http://www.ehow.com/how_2227475_skirt-pattern.html
that might be of help in making a basic skirt out of some of these textured treasures.

The   other texture I have seen so much of for fall is lace..... Lace fabric is shown in almost every collection  everywhere!      All kinds are out there,  but especially an antique-looking lace, and not always a fine lace...sometimes a similar weight as tablecloths you can find at the thrift stores or antique shops.
Thrift stores and antique shops are full of table cloths in all kinds of styles and fabric contents.    The first I would look for is Battenburg, which makes a beautiful blouse.  I am sure that surgery on these garments is going to be "high-risk" , but we will figure it out....(I'm  not above using glue or fraycheck!)  Battenburg is the lace that is like a tape connected together by stitches.  I have seen a lot of dark blacks and blues  used for blouses  in this fall's collections.  This would probably necessitate some RIT dye, but  wow.

Well.....I'm excited about the prospects for fall fashion surgeries!  Most of my stuff is for my daughter, but maybe I will come up with something great for me too!

Don't forget the basic surgery and probably the most valuable to you.......taking a garment and making it your size.....they used to call it ALTERING a garment.  But if you can do that....the world is your oyster.  There are also lots of people who will pay you well to do that for them....I think it is encouraging that so many of you younger generation are learning these wonderful and valuable skills!
Happy Crafting!
