Wet winter, pt.2
St.Petersburg, Russia, January 8, 2005. The embankments of Neva River. The yellow building on Vassilievsky Island is Alexander Menshikov's palace (early 18th century.) The taller 18th century building on the left is I don't know what :)

Iceberg is a mountain of ice :) No, those are just icefloes, blocks of ice. This part of Neva is relatively narrower and deeper than that above Palace Bridge, it's about 200 feet (60 m) deep in the middle, so the current here is faster than above, and ice doesn't last long when winters are relatively mild (like this year.) Above the bridge, there's more ice (I'l post a photo later.)
Last year we could cross Neva by walking on ice, this year it was impossible (we go to St.Pete every January for Xmas vacations - Russian Xmas is January 7, not December 25.)

The building farther left from Menshikov's Palace is the Academy of Fine Art - since the 1750s the highest art teaching institution in Russia. It's a pity one cannot look at it any closer beacuse though the building itself is nothing that special for St.Petersburg :) the ramp to the water there is quarded by two sphynxes - straight from Egypt :)http://artroots.com/ra/morephotos.html

Yup. I knew that. I only forget that the Academy is on Vassilievsky :) Well, typical for a hopeless мааааасквич, what else would I say? ;-))

BTW here's a bit of (opens in a new window) my Chicago (a hopelessly tourist-ish look, I know :)))

здание слева называется "академия художеств".

на его куполе сидит пятиметровая екатерина. недавно отреставрированная и вполне себе блестящая.
