Help a Pro-Life Christian Film-Maker - Vote for His Film! [07 Dec 2007|03:34pm]

kruszer
Hi everyone, I’d really like all pro-lifers here to support a pro-life Christian documentary maker who is also a good friend of mine, John Hetherington. He’s been working on a documentary that I think could easily become the Inconvenient Truth of abortion. He’s already interviewed prominent pro-life and pro-choice figures – including Canadian figures Joyce Arthur and Dr Henry Morgentaler. This film could be BIG.

John is currently entered in a short film competition which if he wins would give him an internship in England with Academy Award Winner David Parfitt and the Trademark Films Production Team…. Imagine how that could boost his odds of having his documentary recognized on a wide scale – and getting our message out there!

So here’s what I need ALL of you to do: Go to http://shortfilm.projectbreakout.com and register so that you can vote. Then find ‘A Word on the Street’ by John Hetherington and vote for it. (http://shortfilm.projectbreakout.com/media_page/entry_id/45)

You can vote for it 15 times per day – EVERY DAY!

John is currently hanging around 5th and 6th place but in order to pull into the top three (top 3 per week move into the finals), he has to have at least 50 to 60 people who vote 15 times every day. Please be one of them and pass this on to ALL your pro-life contacts and pro-life friends. Let’s make this happen and help our pro-life brother give voice to the voiceless!

(To see more ‘A Word on the Street’ videos (his precursor series of cross-country street interviews), go to www.youtube.com/abortedartist )

Amnesty Writeathon, San Mateo [30 Nov 2007|01:01pm]

ladycatherina
Announcing that I'm hosting a local Amnesty Writeathon event - a group letter and petition and holiday card-writing day tentatively scheduled for Saturday, December 8th from 12-4 (drop-in) in the Laurel Meeting Room of the San Mateo Library. 55 Third Street, in the downtown, off of South El Camino.

http://www.amnestyusa.org/Individuals_at_Risk/Global_Writeathon/page.do?id=1108452&n1=3&n2=34&n3=65

Designed to coincide with International Human Rights Day, the event involves writing letters, signing petitions, and sending holiday cards to forgotten political prisoners around the world who are persecuted for nonviolently expressing their political or religious or cultural viewpoints. In the past Amnesty has supported democracy activists, environmentalists, ethnic minorities, religious minorities, women's rights activists, and many others. Amnesty is nonpolitical and nonreligious in itself and simply advocates for freedom of expression and against torture, arbitrary jail sentences, the death penalty, etc.

I'll bring cookies, tea, stamps, international Putumayo music, preaddressed envelopes, and some stationery my supervisor gave me today at work to donate to this event.

This is listed on the Amnesty Writeathon web page - already received a couple emails from interested people. All are welcome and we may go out to dinner as a group afterwards if people would like.

In addition to supporting human rights, this event is a great way to network with intelligent, successful professionals! One never knows whose company may be hiring, or who may know of awesome events happening in the SF Bay Area, or who may have great ideas to assist your university's student organization, or who may know someone who knows someone who...etc.

For those unable to make the event in person I can post links in my journal to the letters and petitions we're writing so you can sign on or mail letters of your own (as well as YouTube links of some musical highlights supporting human rights).

Please comment here (or email me) if you are interested and I will keep you posted.

Would be appreciated if some people here helped promote this on Facebook or elsewhere on LJ :)

Portland/Donald Miller/Imago Dei [29 Nov 2007|01:21pm]

genuinelyhopefu
I'll be in Portland, OR from Jan. 5th-12th for an externship. The externship will most likely be in a building downtown and I'll need to stay somewhere where I can access easy public transportation. I've heard that there's a hostel in the Northwest section of the city that is pretty nice and safe. Is anyone from the area that can give me any feedback? I would like to avoid getting a hotel if all possible since I am a poor grad student, but I want to stay somewhere safe since I'm a mid-20s girl staying by myself. Has anyone had any experience renting a house for a week? I know Portland is a pretty progressive city and craigslist usually has a lot of temporary housing available. I am a little nervous to try but the money saved could definitely be worth it.

I would also appreciate any idea of things to do while I'm there. I know winter is pretty bleak there but I'm sure there's still some fun coffee shops/bars to check out. The real reason I'm wanting to do an externship/possible internship for this summer is to check out Imago Dei and see what's going on with the Christian community out there. It seems like a really cool place. If any of you know people there or even know someone at the church that wouldn't mind having someone stay with them for the summer to babysit or something like that, I would love the opportunity and experience. I keep 3 little girls every Tuesday to help out with expenses while I'm in grad school so I feel comfortable with all ages. Otherwise I'll just find a one-bedroom apt, but I thought I should at least check around just in case.

Thanks!

wishing to not be wishy-washy [23 Nov 2007|02:19pm]

bellarapture7

i'm not so sure that people are really actively following this community (or lj too much at all anymore), but I'll give my question a try in here.

Women as Pastors of a church -- Yes or No & more importantly Why? There's got to be more to it than just a chromosome bias. Every instruction in the Bible seems to me to have been given to us out of love - so what is the love-based reason for an answer to this one?

I'm looking for scripture-based answers and not just opinions. Likewise, it'd help if it wasn't just pointing out a reference with no commentary on it. I help to lead a youth group and currently there are a couple of young ladies in the group who are natural born leaders. This topic has come up recently and a few of the boys have managed to discourage the girls from taking initiative to lead. My opinion used to be a lot different than what it has been shaped to be right now - just from experience and what little God-given insight that I think I have been blessed enough by God to receive, has taught me. I kind of feel wishy-washy on the topic and I wish that I had some clearer convictions on it (especially as a leader). So, I'm seeking some answers from people who've wrestled for an answer with God on this topic to shed some more light my way. And as always, I'm not looking for a debate. If by chance someone does read and does speak up -- hey, thank you! :-)

Read and write, kill your television! [19 Nov 2007|04:52pm]

ladycatherina
In support of the Writers' Guild of America's strike for compensation when their work gets streamed on the Internet, sign up here to pledge to read or write yourself instead of watching TV at least one night a week.

Not all Hollywood writers are wealthy and successful - some are "starving artists" who remain unemployed and work second and third jobs between writing gigs. I've personally met some members, actually of the Screenwriters' Guild, and they traveled the country in a trailer performing at poetry slams for extra cash to live on in between gigs - and I'm sure many WGA members are in a similar situation.

Some writers produce content mainly or exclusively intended for the Internet, and the Internet is growing in influence and writers should be compensated for the use of their work.

And - writing/reading on your own will be fun! Whether you produce poetry, a memoir, a novel, short stories, vignettes, even decorated shopping lists - or finally finish that novel you've been meaning to get to someday, you'll open yourself up to new horizons.

Gulu Walk 2007 - Be an Icon [18 Sep 2007|04:38pm]

ladycatherina
Reposted from [info]ugandacalling - I would like to invite everyone here to join me in a "virtual walk" where we get together and comment, read links, and send petitions (and fundraise/donate if able) to help those affected by the civil war in Uganda. The official Gulu Walk is October 20th, and I'd love to go in person and help out, but the day is hard for me as it tends to be the same as the Cancer Society's annual breast cancer walk, which I attend with my mom. But I'd love to help raise awareness for ending the Ugandan civil war anyway, please comment if you may be interested in some kind of virtual walk (we can just comment and sign petitions, no pressure to fundraise).

Just received an email from World Vision today encouraging people to keep signing their non-denominational petition for other nations to lend moral and logistical support to the peace talks in Uganda: https://secure2.convio.net/wv/site/Advocacy?page=UserAction&cmd=display&id=128

I also encourage as many people as possible to get involved with their local Gulu Walks, as they support organizations on the ground in Uganda assisting people with health, education, etc. http://www.resolveuganda.org/node/305

Even if you are not able to raise money, there are volunteer positions available on walk day helping people check in, find the route, etc. And just coming out shows support and can help make it more likely that people will organize a Gulu Walk next year in your city. Great project for a volunteer club, even one not specifically focused on Uganda.

I'd also like to see a virtual walk for people who do not live near a city with a Walk! This applies to me as I'm in the SF Bay Area and so far there does not seem to be a San Francisco walk yet. Let me know if anyone's interested in virtually walking, and I will contact the Walk coordinators. We can still fundraise and then email or chat via AIM on that day and all send petitions or something, or promise to walk on our own in the future.

Should you choose to sponsor me, here is my Gulu Walk page: https://secure.e2rm.com/registrant/personalPage.aspx?EventID=12619&LangPref=en-CA&RegistrationID=351649

I quoted Neo from the Matrix and Gandalf from Lord of the Rings...

luis palau [27 Jun 2007|11:06pm]

Luis Palau is coming to my area and a lot of churches around here are organizing groups to go. It's a free event and I'd love to see some of the bands who are coming with him, but how is Luis specifically? I don't know much about him. Is he super conservative? That makes me a twee bit nervous.

And thanks!

The Face of Jesus [26 Mar 2007|09:54am]

The Face of Jesus

The face of Jesus:

marred more than any man--
spit upon,
slapped,
thorn-pierced,
bloodied,
sweating,
the beard plucked,
twisted in pain--

For my salvation.

A glorious face, now.

Let its light shine on me, O Light of Life.

Let Your radiance fall on me, Sun and Savior,

Lighten my darkness.

Then grant me this by Your grace:

That I, in turn, may give

"The light of the knowledge of the glory of God" (2 Cor 4:6 AV)

As I see it in the face of Jesus Christ.

Please, I need prayers.

Some family members and I are going to court in a sexual abuse trial. I was not a victim however, I may be summond as a character witness. That means testifying for the victims in their defense. Not only is it an emotionaly charged trial as you could imagine, but I am praying with all my heart that justice will be done, and tho I belive the Lord will prevail, I just want prayers for my family. It's an extremly difficult time.

Please pray for justice for them and that I get some sort of paperwork to show my employer to appear in court. ( i have yet to aquire a supenea) I promised them that I would be there for them no matter what "come hell or high water", and I intend to make good on my promise.

They are so important to me, and between the truth and our faith, I know God will be be there with us.

"for he gives his angels charge over thee to keep thee in all thy ways"

I just ask for your prayers please to help us in this difficult time. Thanks

television [05 Jan 2007|07:29pm]

vinyl86
Hi I'm new! :)
Several of my LJ friends are part of this group so my joining was sort of a band wagon thing.

Name:
Meredith. Or "m". Or Miss Fancy Pants.
Age:
20. 21 in a week!
Occupation:
In between jobs--I'm on family leave from a job that I plan on giving my two weeks notice for soon.
Denomination (if any):
Technically Methodist, but my core Christian Faith is more important to me than my denomination
Political party preference (if any):
Democrat, but I vote for people, not parties.

And I have a question:
What are your favorite religious programs to watch? I've been searching for one and I can definitely testify to the notion that most tele-evengelist programs are not for hippies like us :)
