It's another sign of the apocalypse! Run! Run!

... But seriously, I was thinking just the other day that my widdle hometown was truly the last place in America without a Starbucks on every corner. Alas, that is true no more!

it was only a matter of time.
i was shocked when i came down here and starbucks seemed to have overlooked such a large campus town...

I'm not familiar with the issue, but could someone please explain to me how Starbucks is going to cause Green St/Espresso Royale to go out of business?

i don't believe that will happen... starbucks has lots of compitition in chicago with caribou coffee and such, espresso royale will be around for a while

Whew. I'll try to keep this brief.
The chances of Starbucks blowing Green St, Espresso, Paradiso, et cetera, out of business are obviously very low. Hence, my reasons for opposing Starbucks being for entirely different reasons.

I'll try to keep it as brief as possible...

1) Keeping money local instead of corporate. A Green Street Coffehouse is going to contribute more to the local economy than a Starbucks,

2) Consistently keeping employees JUST below the health insurance threshold,

3) Consistently ignoring the fact that their corporate power could be used to improve the situations of coffee farmers, which Starbucks currently DEGRADES, by forcing prices down to the point that they've actually had NEGATIVE profit margins a few times),

4) Only offering Fair Trade coffee for sale in bean form, instead of actually USING IT IN THEIR COFFEE,

5) Contribution to the corporate homogenization of the country,

6) Misleading and deceptive sales practices (ask how many shots of espresso go into each of the sizes of drinks that they sell),

7) I think their coffee sucks.

And now, for my special Bleeding Heart Liberal icon...

Aren't they a public company? So really they have to do what's best for the share holders, right?

oh -- my favorite reason for being anti got left out.... troops sent a letter saying they loved coffee and would like some sent to them, and the company said that they oppose the war so the troops couldn't drink their coffee... (short version, and yes i know its true and not an urban legend)

IN short, Starbucks is the devil incarnate. My roommates LOVE to take me to the suburbs (I'm originally from south-central IL) because I FREAK out when there's a Starbucks every five seconds. They think it's hilarious.

Don't forget the really slimy practice of going to the landlords of local coffeeshops in any town they want to infiltrate and offering to pay more rent. That one just makes me so mad.

I remember when Potbellies opened and some person was quoted in the DI and said in affirmation "It's about time they brought down some of the good Chicago chains down here." I was very irritated with a range of emotions I can't even really describe and I really just wanted to scream "Just get a sandwich at a local place. There are lots to choose from. Give your money to people you know or at least feasibly can know, you dork, not people you don't!"

Oh please oh please get your sign and let me know where you'll be so I can actually guide poor innocents away from the consumer giant and to other places.

Not particularly a pro- or anti-Starbucks comment, but I feel compelled to point out that there is no link between "corporation" and "not-local." I can become a corporation all by myself. A lot of the local businesses you deal w/might in fact be corporations. So, that argument needs to be rephrased to be convincing.

I have friends who work(ed) at Green St. Coffeehouse, and the previous owners were (IIRC) based in Madison, or at least moved there during their tenure as owners. The current owners are also, AFAIK, not locally based, i.e. they live in Chicago or also Madison or something.

If you'd like, I can clarify with my internal contacts.

(Still, I'd rather drink coffee there than any f*$@ing Starbucks. Sheisse.)

I heard from a reliable source that it's not 'til Oct., but they seem much further along than that. So my answer to this would be that they're opening by October.

July 15th, 6 AM, according to the sign on the door.

And ditto to the sucking at being helpful. When i last checked this, there were 30 comments, none of which said anything about the date opening.

Good luck getting a job.

I heard it was opening in July.

And remember when including Espresso Royale that they also are a chain based out of Ann Arbor Michigan, and have places all down the east coast.

I always wondered why people grouped them in the local coffeeshop group...

So when [info]benchilada directs people to local, non-franchised, non-chain shops, please leave Espresso off the list.

I work at the potbellys nextdoor and got the skinny. The starbucks WAS going to open this week, but there were some delays on some of their construction materials. So the bottom line is that yes, they are opening in about a week and a half (whatever date is on the door, i forgot what it was).

I would just like to point out that Espresso Royale does not franchise...

The Espresso Royale on Goodwin and Oregon is the oldest coffee shop in town and the first espresso bar, having opened way back in 1987.

And at least 2 local coffee shop owners got their start at Espresso Royale...
