| 2007-2008 Season Post-Mortem Part 11: "Lost" |
[Jun. 13th, 2008|06:36 pm] |
| [ | mood |
| | impressed | ] | This season, I’ll be summing up this unusual 2007-2008 season with a post-mortem on the majority of the shows I’ve reviewed during the year, ranking from the very worst to the very best. In some cases, the term “post-mortem” is all too applicable. This is the final part of this 11-step journey, focusing on the fourth season of “Lost”.
By the end of the third season, the producers of “Lost” had pulled off a creative coup: not the now infamous flash-forward aspects of “Through the Looking Glass”, but a deal with ABC to set an end date for the series. As soon as the deal was struck, one major writing challenge was resolved. Prior to the deal, the producers had no idea how long the series would run, and there were reasons to suspect that it would run longer than necessary. This led to a second and third season that felt decompressed, leading some former fans to abandon a show that was “going nowhere”.
All of that has changed; the end date has given the narrative urgency and a sense of direction. The producers clearly set forth a three-act conclusion to the series, encompassing the elements to be resolved in three well-constructed season arcs. While every season has been replete with plot and character arcs, the fourth season had more of a driving purpose than any season before it. And it’s equally clear, from the events of the fourth season finale, that the same will be true for the fifth season as well.
The season was designed to maximize the process of building tension and escalating conflict. Had the original scheduling been preserved (running a total of 16 episodes without interruption), the season might have retained its inherent momentum and rivaled the first season as the best of the series to date. Despite some challenges to the plan, the creative urgency managed to win the day.
The story of the Oceanic Six, sprawling out over the time period between the end of the season and the events of “Through the Looking Glass”, constructed the framework necessary to expand the scope of the series and open up new storytelling perspectives. If nothing else, it was a good test case for moving out of the traditional flashback format, demonstrating that a well-constructed script could change the perspective of time without undue confusion on the part of the audience.
The flash-forwards also introduced a new layer of mystery. Knowing some small sliver of the future does not ruin the story, because often the journey is more interesting and powerful than the destination. Because the “present” was still the main focus, those glimpses of the future only served to add more tension.
While Jack, Kate, and Locke were, as always, at the forefront of the story, other characters received much-needed attention. Sayid finally moved into a more active position, and Hurley’s more serious turn became increasingly important. Sun, with and without Jin, became far more important than anticipated. And Claire, who has been sidelined for a very long time, began to thread back into the story in a big way in the second half of the season. Ben continued to prove his worth as a constant antagonist, and Desmond remains one of the best supporting characters around.
Several new characters were introduced, and like seasons past, they served a distinct narrative role. For example, the four characters introduced in “Presumed Dead” have all proven to be critical in some way or another. Daniel’s knowledge of spacetime physics made him invaluable in terms of understanding the island, and that will likely continue. Miles’ psychic ability has already begun to unveil secrets about the island’s true nature. Charlotte was often in the background, but the finale re-positioned her as very important in the fifth season. Frank served the necessary function of getting the Oceanic Six off the island. And Keamy, the mercenary leader, personified the threat Charles Widmore represents to the survivors.
That’s not to say that the characters were all well-served by the fourth season. While Michael’s character arc made sense in terms of the redemptive core at the heart of the show’s premise, it was far too telegraphed and his eventual fate was never in question. (Allegations of racism underlying Michael’s fate are, in context of the show itself, ridiculous.) After so much time in the background, Jin’s role was mostly counterpoint to Sun’s movements. Sawyer, once so vital to the dynamics of the show, had a very muted character arc (expect him to shine in the fifth season). Juliet, an important part of the third season, never seemed to have anything worthwhile to do, while her motivations became more and more muddled. And despite plenty of air time, Kate’s character continued to be defined by reaction rather than action.
It should also be mentioned that this season saw the loss of Danielle and Alex, both of which were taken down by Keamy. Danielle’s death complicates any attempt to flesh out her story, something important to the overall skein, and while Alex’s death gave additional motivation to Ben, it felt excessive. The series has been criticized for its apparent misogyny in the past, and this season certainly didn’t help matters.
In addition to the quibbles over character choices here and there (none of which is particularly new), the season suffered from the effects of the writers’ strike. The effects were relatively minor, especially compared to other high performers like “Supernatural”, but effects were still felt. In particular, the second half of the season had to be condensed by three hours (an extra hour was added to the finale, but it only expanded that part of the story). The overall arc had the same conclusion, but the compression was still apparent.
That said, “Lost” continues to be the most complex and rewarding show on the air, particularly for those with the patience to let the story unfold on its own terms. The fourth season is easily one of the best thus far, reaching its heights even after so much ground has been covered. The fourth season earned a Critical Myth average rating of 8.0, a slight improvement over the third season, and for the second year in a row, “Lost” gained top honors for the season. For most fans, that comes as no surprise.

| Critical Myth Review: Lost 4.13: "There's No Place Like Home: Part II" |
[May. 30th, 2008|08:54 pm] |
| [ | mood |
| | ecstatic | ] | As always, "Lost" is the very last major finale of May sweeps, bringing the season to a rousing close. I've never been disappointed with a "Lost" finale, and that trend certainly continues this time around. The more I think about it, the more I like it. It's going to be a very long wait for the fifth season, but at this point, I have absolutely no doubt that it will be worth it.
Lost 4.13/4.14: There's No Place Like Home: Part II
Overall, this episode was a satisfying season finale, completing the season arc while sowing the seeds for the next chapter. While some immediate questions were answered, most of the larger mysteries remain, leaving plenty of room to maneuver in the final two seasons. Even so, this was the final piece in an important bridge towards resolution. |

| Critical Myth Review: Lost 4.12: "There's No Place Like Home: Part I" |
[May. 16th, 2008|08:07 pm] |
| [ | mood |
| | content | ] | Surprisingly, I've heard a lot of criticism for this episode. Words like "filler" and "jump the shark". I'm not sure what show these people have been watching for the past four years, but every finale event has started off with a relatively slow opening act. It's standard storytelling. A lack of flash and dazzle is not a lack of quality! Nor does a show suck if some plot point fails to meet specific personal expectations or predictions. This is a show that rewards the long view, and that ought to have been apparent by now.
Lost 4.12: There's No Place Like Home: Part I
Overall, this episode was mostly setup for the remaining two-hours of the season finale. While a great deal of time was spent moving the characters into position for the conflict to come, there were a few minor tidbits revealed along the way. The true joy here is in the artistry of the storytelling, which continues on the strong trend established this season. |

| Critical Myth Review: Lost 4.11: "Cabin Fever" |
[May. 9th, 2008|05:42 pm] |
| [ | mood |
| | ecstatic | ] | I continue to be amazed at how well the shorter season format has worked out for the writers of "Lost". While it's still a bit shorter than it should be, the fourth season has been very tightly written and has taken the show in a great direction. I'm also happy to see some of the less prominent characters stepping back into the limelight. After this episode, it's hard to imagine that the season finale will disappoint, and it leaves me crushed at the thought that it will be several months before the show returns.
Lost 4.11: "Cabin Fever"
Overall, this episode was another heavy hitter for the fourth season, dropping a metric ton of shocking revelations about the mythology. A number of intriguing possibilities are now on the table, and many of them could end up resolving long-standing mysteries from the very beginning of the series. This is the perfect prelude to the massive fourth season finale. |

| Ukulele-ish goodness. |
[May. 4th, 2008|03:42 am] |
Hi everyone,
For all the talk of the major characters, people in flashbacks, The Others, the people on the boat and pretty much everyone else on the planet, there's one group of people I feel gets overlooked in Lost. That's right: the random other survivors of Oceanic 815 who aren't major characters - the people in the background. What happens in their day-to-day life? Who knows? And, sadly, who cares?
I've written a ukulele-based comedy song about the other survivors called "The Other 35" - and I suspect you guys might like it. Yes, I know the number's probably slightly off (I can't remember the exact tally of random survivors as of Season 4)... but it's a comedy song from the point of view of those other survivors. No major spoilers in it and only one use of a rude word: c**p.
Feel free to cross-post it wherever you like. It's dedicated to you guys - the Lost fans. And to the random unnamed survivors, the poor buggers that they are. Enjoy :).

| Critical Myth Review: Lost 4.1: "Something Nice Back Home" |
[May. 2nd, 2008|07:43 pm] |
| [ | mood |
| | pleased | ] | The episodes focusing on relationships have never been my particular favorites, and that has continued to be true in this season as well. The exceptions have been the episodes that start with the relationships but diverge into new areas of the mythology. That's very much the case in this episode, so it managed to transcend my initial skepticism. Lost 4.10: "Something Nice Back Home" Overall, while the focus was more or less on the endless love polygon, the underlying ramifications gave that focus an interesting new twist. As always, the writers are challenging the devoted fans to go back to previous episodes with the more complete context in mind. The path to the finale is still front and center, and the storytelling is more confident than it has been in a very long time. |

| Critical Myth Review: Lost 4.9: "The Shape of Things to Come" |
[Apr. 25th, 2008|08:08 pm] |
| [ | mood |
| | excited | ] | It was only a month-long hiatus, but it still felt like forever. Episodes like this are the reason why. This one had me from the teaser and didn't let go until the very last second. I have the feeling the rest of the season is going to be like this, and if so, I'm very, very glad the second half of the season was salvageable after the writers' strike!
Lost 4.9: The Shape of Things to Come
Overall, this episode started off the second half of the season on a massive high-note, setting the stage for the grueling conflict to come and shedding light on ongoing mysteries. There are some criticisms to be made along the way, but the story itself does much to make up for it. This was meant to be the season that changes everything, and it is living up to its name. |

Review: Lost: Via Domus
When this particular game was first announced, I was deeply intrigued. Ever since the first season, the producers of “Lost” have desperately wanted to create a multimedia concept. Unfortunately, the implementation has been sketchy at best and abysmal at worst. |

| Critical Myth Review: Lost 4.8: "Meet Kevin Johnson" |
[Mar. 25th, 2008|09:06 pm] |
| [ | mood |
| | frustrated | ] | The holiday weekend made it nearly impossible for me to watch this episode and comment on it quickly, but after a brief delay, here's the review! I wasn't thrilled to death with the episode (nor was it terrible, for that matter), but it did leave me wishing that I could skip ahead to the next episode right away instead of waiting a month. Something tells me this next break between seasons is going to be incredibly harsh!
Lost 4.8: Meet Kevin Johnson
Overall, this episode offers some interesting revelations, but it is still largely transitional in nature, setting the stage for the rest of the season. Enjoyment of the episode will depend greatly upon interest in the central character and his personal issues, and even then, it's the unexpected connections and timeline considerations that will ultimately prove most intriguing. |

| Critical Myth Review: Lost 4.7: "Ji Yeon" |
[Mar. 14th, 2008|07:19 pm] |
| [ | mood |
| | impressed | ] | I wasn't sure what to expect out of this episode. The episodes this season have been falling into two simple categories: solid, even above average episodes or episodes that polarize the audience in a huge way. Thankfully this is the former rather than the latter. Considering that the two focal characters did not start out as favorites of mine, it's amazing to think how much that has changed. The end of this episode had me just a bit weepy, and that almost never happens! Lost 4.7: Ji Yeon Overall, this episode gives focus to two characters that have been out of the limelight for far too long, fleshing out the flash-forward status quo in the process. Though this episode is largely transitional in nature, the format provides surprises and small revelations keep the season arc moving. One major revelation was sadly all too predictable, but the writers managed to make up for it. |

| | curious | ] | Hi folks,
I'm hoping you can help with a couple of questions.
1. Anyone know where this icon comes from? I was surfing various lost forums yesterday, saved this one icon, and now today I can't remember where I got it from. I've tried searching through my history, and googling, to no avail - and would like to at least give credit, if not find the original icon set.
2. I'm trying to find nicely designed icons with Desmond and the text "brother" (or even a phrase with "brother" in it). Anyone got any favourites/inks?
Thanks |

| Critical Myth Review: Lost 4.6: "The Other Woman" |
[Mar. 7th, 2008|08:06 pm] |
| [ | mood |
| | disappointed | ] | This was the kind of episode that I really wanted to like, and kept waiting to like, and just left me frustrated. As I said to someone else, it felt like the writers came up with an idea and tried to find a way to shoehorn it into the canon. To be fair, some aspects of that idea fit within the existing background, but other elements took me a while to reconcile. I'm still not sure it all feels right, and it's been a long time since I've felt that way after an episode of "Lost".
Lost 4.6: "The Other Woman"
Overall, this episode appears to be a mass of contradictions, and while it is possible to reconcile the apparent changes in characterization, it's also possible that this is an unfortunate and damaging writing choice. Considering how strong the season has been thus far, this potential misstep is all the more glaring and all the more concerning. |
|
|
| Critical Myth Review: Lost 4.5: "The Constant" |
[Feb. 29th, 2008|07:55 pm] |
| [ | mood |
| | ecstatic | ] | This episode captured my attention from the get-go, and I'm still thrilled by the implications of what we've seen. I think the former fans who abandoned the series before this season should be kicking themselves. The answers are beginning to unfold, and while there's still plenty of time left before the end (43 episodes!), there's a light at the end of the tunnel. Something tells me it will be another very long wait once this season is over!
Lost 4.5: The Constant
Overall, this episode continues to propel the narrative into unexpected directions while providing insight into the mysteries at the heart of the series. The episodes devoted to the character at the center of this particular storm have always been powerful and unique, and that trend is not broken by any means. The season continues to progress along the season arc with confidence and consistency. |

| Critical Myth Review: Lost 4.4: "Eggtown" |
[Feb. 22nd, 2008|06:32 pm] |
| [ | mood |
| | frustrated | ] | Despite the fact that I wasn't quite as impressed with this episode as I was with the rest of the season to date, I still think it had a number of good points. I still love how the "future timeline" is being fleshed out, and how much that expands the scope. I've always been excited about "Lost", but this season has settled into a kind of storytelling maturity and confidence that I find truly appealing!
Lost 4.4: "Eggtown"
Overall, this episode was a slight slip from the strong start to the fourth season, largely due to focus on a character that continues to be one of the least developed. There are some good surprises along the way, and more information is revealed with intriguing repercussions, but this is the first slight misstep for the season. |
