EL wire question [09 Oct 2008|02:16pm]

jb_27
When an EL wire driver says it can handle "4 feet of wire," does that mean the luminescent wire only, or does that include non-luminescent wire running from the driver to the end of the EL wire?

Thanks.

EL wire newbie here.

Afterburn [04 Oct 2008|12:29pm]

[ mood | excited and nervous and lonely ]

Anyone here planning on attending Afterburn, the Florida burn? I've never been to any kind of BM event and I'm considering going but I will be going alone. Any advice/tips, especially for going alone to a regional event? I can get everything I need for the event except I don't have a tent, but I have a gracious offer to camp with a theme camp. Does this mean I don't need a tent? I already e-mailed her and I am awaiting a reply. Thanks!!!

Baking at Burning Man! [03 Oct 2008|09:22pm]

lisianthia
2008 was my first burn and I can wait for next year! Here are some photos of my playa baking adventures!

The idea: I wanted to bring some of my passions with me out to the desert, so in addition to carting out some of my massage gear, I made a batch of chocolate chip cookie dough before the trip, rolled it into little balls and froze it. Here is the big clump of dough out on the playa pre-baking.

"Baking" cookies on the trunk of a car. I tried to make a foil tent for it, but it kept blowing away.

New tactic: "Baking" cookies on the dashboard of a car. I was going for the "bug under a magnifying glass" effect here. It worked slightly better than the trunk, but they still weren't cooked. Nobody complained about eating warm, gooey, chocolatey dough balls though. I just wished I'd had some ice cold milk.

The verdict: Neat idea, and the experiment was fun, but it was a pain in the ass to make sure the raw dough was being kept cool enough every day, and actual cookies never came to fruition. I lost some of the dough on the last day when water from the cooler got into the container I was storing it in. Next year I'll just make a shit ton of baked goods in advance to bring on the trip.

Doing a survey [25 Sep 2008|03:24am]

celtic_moonfire
[ mood | creative ]

My camp has decided to become a full-fledged theme camp.

We're the Space Monkey Mafia.

Our leader is some graphics/website guru and has to have everything just so before he'll let us give out the URL. When we get the ok, you'll be the first I give it to...

We have only a couple of things going on.

During the day our fearless leader, PlayaMonkey, is doing a multi-media dome chill space. We have to keep it dark and cool for the projectors and computer to work right... (ya get what I'm sayin here?)

At night this is transformed into my vampire bar/playa wedding chapel. The Lifeforce Speakeasy
(We didn't want to copy Spike's with the whole stripper thing.)
There will be red booze, goth/industrial/punk music, horror flicks and silent movies, maybe some fetish shows.
And of course on the spot weddings for those who want to have a playa marriage. (These are not 100% contractually binding marriages, no paperwork, dissolves faster than you can say "Las Vegas" if you like.)

We're going to try for placement next to another new Colorado tc - the Expat Aliens. They have a super cool cocktail hour bar and hope for one of the smaller keyholes next year. (the 730 one I believe.)

So my question is this: does any of this sound like something any of you would be so interested in as to try to find us?
What would you like to see in a bar like this?
Any advice from experts on running a playa bar?
I'm open to all suggestions, including snarky ones.
It's time to start building and we need to know that we're creating an atmosphere people will enjoy.

Thanks! Have a good one!

"Prepare for the playa" website [20 Sep 2008|11:18pm]

What do you guys think about the Burning Man org associated "Prepare for the Playa" event? For those of you link-lazy, it is an event in which many vendors gather to sell interesting clothes, glowing things and tall shoes to paying customers during pre-BM months.

Pros/cons of the PFP event? Would you buy something there? Would you critique others for doing so? Do you have an qualms about this site existing and BM advertising them?

edited to clarify.

Daily Planet goes to Burning Man [17 Sep 2008|01:20pm]

tengwarsenna
Don't know if anyone has posted this yet but the science and technology show Daily Planet had a Burning Man episode. It was really focussed on the structures and how they are made and the troubles people face as they are building these amazing things. It was really cool and suggest everyone should look for it.

virgin question [13 Sep 2008|11:58pm]

lowexpectations
hello,
I am finally at a point in my life where going to burning man is an option.
and I will go in 2009. burning man or bust.

Ive talked to people who've gone as well as read a bunch of things on eplaya and in here.
it seems to me that going for my first time it would be very helpful to join some kind of camp.
I have all intentions of contributing to the camp and not just showing up to take advantages of their resources.

but - how do you decide which camp to join? I know theres an lj camp, and a camp for another group i'm involved in (couchsurfing.com) - but Ive also seen/heard about several others that sound amazing and look interesting.

for your first burns did you stay with a camp? how did you decide to join that one over the million others?
thanks.

"When there's nothing else left to burn, you have to set yourself on fire"

That's what Burning Man was to me.

Just had to post that after hearing it on the radio last night, starting off some song. I'd been trying to capture how I felt about Burning Man, before and after, about the "fires of transformation," and this was damn perfect. I think it should be the "official slogan";o)

Missed Connection [12 Sep 2008|02:19pm]

badawg
Hey Lady
Saturday of Burn, Close to mid day, dust storm raging in fits.
You, the Beauty,  were standing in the corner of Babylon (about 3rd level) as I, the Beast, climbed on by.
Even w/ gogglesand masks, our aurical senses met and acknowledged each other.
Two flirtatious waves, passing by, under the cover of sand.
I climbed to the top to enjoy the view.....and forever (?) lost you to the sands of time.

Please find a way out of the storm!!!!

Sad I missed the burn... [11 Sep 2008|05:21pm]

celtic_moonfire
[ mood | nostalgic ]
[ music | the buzz of a halogen gone insane ]

I know I'm new on this burn community and I'm a big mouth.
Sometimes I give good advice (head??) sometimes I give good disadvice (with teeth???)
Sometimes I just say "look'it dis thang! Tis cool, yah?"

My first burn was in 2005 "Psyche", I'd had burner friends insisting I should go for 10 years before that. My campmates considered me a Stealth Virgin, I knew a hell of a lot more about burning than anyone who has never been there should know. I even knew all about Gerlach and the DPW Ranch from Reno friends before my first burn.

I hit the playa for my first time that Monday morning and about died of excitement, I was like a 3 yr old bouncing in my seat. As we were setting up, after all the big stuff was done I holed myself up in my rented RV (yes, I was that lame my first year, but it ended up helping the Village I was a part of as a wind break) and had a completely and total meltdown.

It was more than I ever imagined, it was HUGE and this was still on a Monday when Monday's weren't the most popular day for everyone to show up. We hit dust storms at the gate and while trying to find Synapse Village and while setting up...

But it was the raw energy which crackles over BRC, the buzz of so many creative minds working to build a city which last only a week and the only people I was around were new in my life - most I had met when they showed up to carpool in my RV 2 days early - it was overwhelming. I'm a hermit, a recluse, a misanthrope, an anti-social OCD goth.

And I just put myself in the Hardest situation for someone of my non-people inclination could face. There were tears and panic and "Oh my gods what have I done?!?!?" Then I took a deep breath, decided it was something I needed to not just experience but be a part of and faced the playa once more.

I had the time of my life, 05 is still my favorite year and I swore I would come back and keep coming back. I finally found a community which doesn't just want to be different and be sullen about it but actually wants to make a positive and long lasting impact on the entire world.

I did for the next two years, I got involved both on playa and regionally, I worked on the Ranch and became DPW, I led an Esplanade Theme Camp in 06, I've worked for BMIR and became close friends with Bobzilla, I interviewed with Maid Marian for an RC position here in Denver...

And then life did it's dance this year - made me slow down for health reasons and then I found I couldn't afford it this year, due to a much needed but unexpected move.

I thought I was ok with it, we had the DNC here to keep me occupied and a new home. The not for profit group I am a part of is starting our busiest season, I had more than enough to keep my mind from the playa. Or at least I thought I did, but then I got grumpy and morose and snarkier than usual (which is Really snarky!)

I found that don't want to miss another burn as long as it's still going, it was hell being left behind.

Not for the partying, nor the great music going 24/7.

I miss being in the only city which applauds my obnoxious tastes in clothing (my costumes are my clothes, I wear them whenever I can.)
Which gives me food for deep, intense, creative thought every single dusty step of the way.
Which makes me participate and makes me excited to have so much to participate in.
Which brings new members of my ever extending family straight into my lap with a hug and a smile.
Which, each year, teaches me a profound lesson about myself that I didn't even know was on my life's syllabus until it hits me on the head.
Which makes me stretch and grow and be more than I ever dreamed possible.

You could say that these things can be found/done anywhere and you would be partially right (except the clothing which makes people run off the road anywhere else, no really it's that loud and obnoxious.)

It's the fact that you cannot help BUT to do/find these things on the playa - it's in your face 24/7. Even holing myself up inside my rented rv that first year, it seeped into the cracks and under the doors - it was calling me to come and Be a part of it all.

I can bitch and moan about tons of things, I can act burnier than thou (though I loathe that) but the simple fact remains - BRC is my hometown and Only there do I finally feel like I'm home and I can relax and be me 100% of the time without any of the mundane world judgments or repercussions.

Even the harshness of BRDesert seems like paradise to me, I missed seeing the Milky Way from open playa and the beauty of the Esplanade all lit up on Friday and Saturday night. I missed the silence of thousands of people watching the Temple burn and the profound sense of community release which comes with it. I missed the dustdevils and the storms and the water trucks...

I missed going home and I am so sad about it that I Must go back next year and try with all of my might not to miss another one until BRC is just dust itself.

Seeking photographer...with girlfriend... [11 Sep 2008|12:39pm]

unit_cohesion
On Thursday morning, a friend and I climbed the stairs of Babylon to watch the sun rise (which was probably one of my most treasured moments from the week). While atop the giant structure, a photographer asked to take our picture. I know this is a long-shot, but the way he got our picture was the best. He was wearing a lanyard around his neck with a large tag picturing a girl. He asked if he could take a picture of us, "It's for my girlfriend, back home!", then he held up the large picture of her to show us "his girlfriend". We thought this was pretty funny, and he took a shot.

I'm guessing he did the "girlfriend" thing to get a lot of awesome shots of people, so I thought maybe someone else here also encountered this gent. Anyhow, if anyone might know who he is, or have a link to his photos, I'd love to be able to contact him and possible see how he captured my wonderful sunrise moment.

Thanks,
n.
