Oct. 6th, 2008 @ 01:08 am DC-area classes?
Hi all!

I am new to the DC area (in Silver Spring, MD) and would like to start regularly taking tribal classes. Virginia is a bit of a trek for me, but I certainly wouldn't mind something metro-accessible or with decent parking in the district itself or in MD near Silver Spring/Bethesda/Takoma Park/Chevy Chase/etc.

I was looking into Sahara Dance, but it looks like they operate on a semester basis and the new classes don't begin until the new year. I'm looking for something I can start going to in the next several weeks, and it seems like every place I look doesn't have new classes starting until January!

Any ideas of beginners' tribal classes that are drop-in or have classes starting in the next couple weeks? Anything? (I also really need to meet some friends here, preferably sooner rather than later, and what better way than to start classes? :) )

Thanks so much in advance!

yesterday was lovefest in san francisco. there was a vip room inside city hall, featuring dj's, a fashion show, and of course, bellydance =)
I thought, well, it's Lovefest. what more appropriate song to dance to than "Lets Get It On" by Marvin Gaye?
I think it went over pretty well...

So now that the knees have stabilized, and after kissing goodbye to 17 lbs and two inches of boobage and waist thanks to judicious application of TrainerGrrl, I want to get back to dancing.

My question is thus:

What can I do OTHER THAN using kneebraces/wrapping the knees to help them be happy? The pain syndrome completely rules out anything wrapped around or touching the knees, unless one considers me potentially writhing around on the studio floor in sheer agony to be an exciting new dance move.

Any belly dance events happening on or near Halloween in San Jose, California? I'm visiting family, and I want to take them to a cool show!

My Google-fu is failing me.

Hello~ I have been reading and lurking a bit for the past month and decided to introduce myself.  My name is Mary, I'm 34, and I've just finished my first round of classes.  I did take a couple of beginners' courses many years ago, when I was about 20 but never continued on with it because of health issues (I have fibromyalgia and CFIDS).  About a week ago we had a Students Night where the troupe at our studio performs every week, and they had open floor for all levels of students to dance if we so chose.  I did, and I had a great time, so I hope that eventually I will be performing, though I have a long way to go yet to get to that point.

I have a few questions and I hope that you will bear with me.

My weight is sliding down a bit (I am currently about a size 20) but my bustline (a 42DDD) doesn't seem to be budging at the rate the rest of me is.  I have always been on the bustier side and always self conscious about it, even when I was thinner and younger.  Still I'm trying to work through that because eventually I do plan to reduce surgically and wear the fun bra tops.

For now, one of my instructors advised me to use colored tights and/or fishnet as a sort of barrier/cover under the bra tops.  I.E. cut the crotch for the headhole, cut the legs at whatever length I want (or just cut holes for fingers if I wish).  Does anyone have any advice for other methods to ease me into a comfort zone?

Also I have a hard time finding above a DDD.  I have considered making my own, because I come from a long line of seamstresses (grandmothers, aunts, sister, mother, etc), but support, is obviously an issue.  I have some really good supporting balconette bras from Lane Bryant--would it be easier to convert those with embellishment?  Or wear beneath the bra top and the net/tights barrier?  Or does anyone have any suggested sites that carry for those of us who can easily cause seismic events with a shoulder shimmy?

I start my second cycle of beginner lessons on Monday after the initial 8 week introduction, and I have to say it's done wonders for my body image (well except that breast thing).  A month and a half ago, I was too self conscious to walk across the gym (which is women only, btw) that I go to for my regular workouts without a baggy shirt and sweats.  Wednesday, I went for a pilates class and wore some snug pants I use for BD class and a snug tank.  I've lost a size since I started dancing, and I felt empowered by it.

Sort of stemming from that, my last question--I am taking a weekly pilates class because of the core strengthening it provides.  There used to be a yoga class but there is no instructor there to teach it any longer.  Does anyone have any suggestions for a good DVD I can do at home?  I have a mat that I used to class and figured I can do it when I get up in the morning before work.

Thank you so much for your patience with my banter.  I've learned a lot since joining the community!

Oct. 4th, 2008 @ 08:53 am Pricing for Classes
Hey All. I have a question as to how much you are willing to charge for classes and how much you are willing to pay for classes.

I have recently started a 1-hour bd fitness class at a local fitness center, where I am charging $60 for a 6-week session. I charge that much for my 1 hour beginner technique class as well.

The manager of the gym informed me that after this current 6-week session, he'd like to move to an on-going format of classes, allowing participants to purchase 10-class cards for $100 and just come any time, rather than having fixed 6-week sessions, like I'm currently running.

I think that asking people for $100 at a time is a bit much, especially in my lower-middle income working class area. Across the river, where they also do this, it works because the economic structure over there is much different than here. The sister gym is in a much more financially affluent area and people can drop more cash at a time in that area.

They want to do this because they have "10-class cards" already made up. I would rather charge less at a time and make the classes more accessible to more people. I know one woman who can't even afford the $60 class fees, nevermind the $100 class fees.

Now, classes are also open to drop-ins for a slightly higher rate - $12 per class. But do you think that $100 at a pop is unreasonable? I really feel uncomfortable charging that much at one time, but I don't want to cause waves at the brand new place I've just started teaching.

Thoughts? Thanks in advance!

Oct. 2nd, 2008 @ 10:24 am Post Baby Costume Help
So now that my son is 6 months old I can FINALLLY fit back into my pre-preggy jeans. What I can't fit back into are my dance tops. I went from a B/C cup to a D/DD.

Anyone have any good links or friends that make dance bras (like cabaret) in D + cups that aren't just the cheap $99 "Turkish" style with appliques and fringe? I can find cholis and tribal bras that work, but not too many quality cabaret tops.

And to make things more complicated, I'm a size 4/6. Most "plus size" bra/belt sets are way too big in the hips.

Any help?

Greetings!

I'm a HUGE bellydancing fan, a hopeful pupil, & the organizer of a zombie event that's happening this year on the night of Nov. 1st in DC/Silver Spring.   We've never done anything like this before, but this year I'm ending our event at the Piratz Tavern, & I'd love to find some performers who might want to appear at the end of our event. :):)  (To encourage people to stay through the whole Lurch, and to really end the gig w/a bang! ^_^)  So my first thought was naturally- "hey!  Bellydancers!!!"

Oct. 1st, 2008 @ 12:19 pm Nice steady baladi and masmoudi.
Aside from Solace's Rhythm of the Dance, which I think is a great album for learning dance rhythms, anyone out there got a rec for a good basic baladi or masmoudi? I want my students to be able to hear the drums as well as be able to dance to it.

That is all.

Just trying to get a feel for things.

Do you consider yourself self-taught or did you take lessons?  How long did you take lessons before you started dancing in public?

Are you certified to teach?  How did you get your certification?

What type/style of dance do you do?

Do you get paid to perform?

Do you dance alone or with someone?

I'm either hormonal (best bet) or I've hit a wall where I'm scratching my head going...what am I doing?  Where am I going?  What does this lead to?  I just see myself pumping more and more money into dance and YES, I LOVE THE DANCE.  But I can dance at home for free. *sigh* any info will be helpful in maybe getting an idea as to what is out there and what options there are.

Sep. 22nd, 2008 @ 05:33 pm Allergy to Jewelry
So after one month of dancing every weekend in full costume and spending the week scrubbing the blackheads, pimples, and soothing the rashes away, it finally occured to me that my dance jewelry is causing the problem with my skin.

Specifically, the metal.

This past week, i found a beautiful kuchi choker that I wore and as I was dancing and starting to sweat, it literally felt like my neck was on fire. when I removed the piece, there was a rash and pimples exploding all over.

What can I do? Obviously I want to continue to wear my pieces (and so far only my neck has shown such sensitivity). I know that I can sew some fabric on the back of the choker, but upon realizing that was the problem, I have come to understand that the metal coins that hang down from my different necklaces are the cause of my breakouts.

Obviously, I can't back those in fabric.

I was told about the clear nail polish trick, but after searching the internet for advice on that, it seems the consensus is that it ruins the jewelry and I don't want to do that. So what can be done so that I don't rip jewelry off my body mid performance. (I notice that the reaction seems to be bigger the more I sweat)

hi everyone,

the updated showcase flier is behind the cut.  please note that the class and the showcase will now be held in the same location.  if you know someone in so cal who would be interested, please pass the flier along to them.  and please feel free to repost the flier.

our goal is to showcase all genres of belly dance and give local dancers [and out of town guests] the opportunity to work with professional musicians.

it is especially important that we have a strong showing of support from the community on our first event, so the venue will allow us to bring you a diverse and wonderful group of dancers each month.  and of course provide space for local belly dance vendors to tempt you with their goodies.

Sep. 19th, 2008 @ 10:19 pm Help!
So I found this awesome belly dance website and despite the ridiculously insane prices a few days ago, and I think I want to buy a bodice from them. The problem? I thought I had bookmarked it, and I can't find it!

The website I'm looking for is well-designed, have tribal hair falls, sticks, and similar, and awesome renaissance faire-style crop bodice/vest things. The best part, though, is that they have gauntlets but it has sleeves, the same cotton (I think) as the chemise that goes under the bodice. The bodices came in all sorts of silks, notably phoenix pattern silk. They cost like $70...

I'm going crazy trying to backtrack through my browser history, and I'm getting nada retracing my steps.

Any leads, however faint?

Thanks,

Lis
