I don't know if any of the surrounding New Orleans baristas have posted, but seeing as most of them have power according to my DM, they might not have bother.
Terrebonne Parish however, has been the one of the hardest hit parishes. We are looking at October 1st as our final deadline for electricity. Sewage is still out in 70% of Houma and Terrebonne, and water remains on a 1-minute boil hazard advisory. The mosquitoes are pretty stirred up as well, as my legs can attest after sitting in my hot, humid apartment for two days after the storm before we evacuated to a Shreveport Holiday Inn Express
so here's the skinny, my checkbook and hours are slim-pickins'. Turns out our store sustained interior roof damage, the logo is blown out on the store front, and our awning outside if completely wiped out. Sbux is going to pay us for the hours we would have worked, which is limited to this week alone. Yippee. Now the last national catastrophe my area had was Katrina, and according the hiring packet I filled out, that we were supposed to receive 500 dollars deposited into our account if a hurricane ever had a direct impact on our store and we had to evacuate, which we were under a mandatory evac.
Well so far we are being encouraged to pick up hours at a nearby city, Lafayette, which is an hour drive from my parents, who finally have power back. There's no way I could commute 45 mins northeast to school and then 45 mins back to my parents, and THEN drive ANOTHER HOUR to Lafayette with a highly unreliable vehicle.

I canceled my direct deposit yesterday and canceled my bank account today. How long does the cancellation take to go through? I know it takes 1-3 weeks to put the direct deposit through but will they just send me a check next week or am i going to have to figure out how to go after corporate. Bank of America said that a lot of times people don't get a paper check and the bank inst responsible for the money [but that could've been to keep me at the bank].
Anyone ever cancel their direct deposit? |

...and yesterday was my first actual shift on the bar/POS. Can I say... "WHEW?!"
While I really enjoyed it and am excited about my new job, I'm realizing that Sbux is really no joke! Actually, I lie...I realized it when I started all the training modules. There's a lot to learn before you even touch a drink.
I have developed new respect for everyone who has been serving me my lovely Starbucks coffee through the years.

So, I study Graphic Design, typically I take my classes in the afternoon-nights. I work mornings shifts and the days have been hectic yadda, yadda, yadda and for some reason my Illustrator class is almost like relax time for me (I don't know what it is, but sitting down and playing with vectors is soothing?) that was until my professor said to open the bonus logo to vector for homework what was it?

When I tell my manager he's going to snicker with delight.

It is so cute how OMGEXCITED a lot of my customers are at the return of Pumpkin Spice. I've made sooooo many people's day with the happy news, it's great.
Whoever recommended pumpkin spice chai-- I LOVE YOU. I've been recommending it to every customer that gets a chai latte, lol. Yesterday I decided to try an iced soy pumpkin spice chai, and it's changed my life. SO. FREAKING. GOOD.
The oatmeal isn't THAT bad in my opinion, either. It's definitely not the best thing I've ever had, but it's a pretty filling breakfast, if you put all the toppings in there. *shrug* I'm easy to please. Does anyone else actually like the oatmeal? I've seen a lot of negative opinions about it on here... |

We all know customers hitting on us is annoying as hell (well typically) but this guy actually managed to be funny! I was covering the floor by myself and this guy handed me a packet of raw sugar and told me I'd dropped my nametag. Seriously just lol

I was wondering if there are any baristas from the two stores in University Village, Seattle. I know there's one right near the Ben and Jerry's store and one right near the Apple Store. Due to some family stuff, I might be up in that area of Seattle for the entire fall through to the end of the holiday season. Do your two stores hire or take transfers seasonally? Okay, guys, I feel a bit silly asking this, but I'm just going to do it anyway. Have you ever had a crush on a customer? What have you done about it? This guy comes in nearly every day, but I know nothing about him other than his usual drink order and the fact that he's somewhere around my age and goes to college in the area. I have no way of knowing if he's single, even.
I've been trying to make it obvious that I'm happy to see him when he comes in, without being super-cheesy about it. He always seems happy to see me too, but I don't know if it's just because I know his drink order and I'm nice. And I gave him his drink for free today for no reason. But I want to communicate that I like him while still being professional ('cause he could be taken or just not interested, and even though he's my age, it's still not a normal dynamic / situation as long as I'm busy and on the clock). And I can't just give him free drinks all the time. So... what should I do?
(He did thank me for the drink today and said he wished he could pay me back for it somehow. I almost said he could give me his number and we'd be even, haha. No, I would not actually say that!) |

Customer walks in, hands me an extra-large Dunkin' Donuts cup.
Customer: Can you throw this shit out? Seriously. It tastes like water. Oh, and give me a Venti drip. My daughter wanted to go to Dunkin' Donuts, and I figured I'd give it a try. Man, it tastes like nothing.
Needless to say, I gave him his Venti on the house. |

okies, let us Oo + lol together
We had a winner at drive-thru today. At the intercom, the girls ordered a Grande JCHF and said they had a treat receipt. Word; gave a total. They come up, give them their total again, and ask if they've got the receipt. She hands me a stamped napkin. Shit you not. I smiled, chuckled, and did my best to not bust out laughing in their faces. I asked them if they had a different receipt, and they claimed someone from our store gave it to them like that. They weren't rude about it, just intensely retarded....especially when they asked if they could pay for a tall instead of a grande since they were so "inconvenienced." Yes...for the two/three minutes you were sitting in your car complaining...I was just slightly annoyed that they were in drive-thru pulling this shit, but all-in-all, the experience was extremely amusing. They eventually got what they wanted, but were told the policy would be enforced next time.

I'm finding it harder and harder to give legenadry service these days. This morning my manager printed out those comments that everyone gets through the portal (the company wide ones under culture on the portal. sorry i'm not sure what they're called). It seemed like every one was the most whiny and lame complaint ever. One was from a woman claiming that she hadn't drank regular coffee in years and got a cup of "decaf" from Starbucks, but didn't feel right, so she looked on her receipt and it didn't say decaf. Let's be honest, how many of use ring decaf every time? As long as the barista knows it's decaf/gets the decaf drip, then it's all good. I try to ring up decaf and modifiers that have no price when I can, but it's not my top priority.
Another one was froma lady that waited in the drive through for 10 minutes and didn't get anything for free. WTF? Did we change our name to Freebux? Also, I'm kinda tired of people wanting freebies for shopping. No. you cannot have a small coffee when you buy a pound of coffee. It was a promotion many MANY years ago. My manager made the comment that people shop at the market all the time, but do they give you free stuff all the time? No. When you buy a pound of ham, do they give you a tall coffee. I don't think so. So why can't people just get over it?
I must say, I'm getting tired of working for a company that everyone is trying to scam. I recently got a 2nd job at a fine dining restaurant and it's hard to not to say adios to the company, but I love my regulars and my coffee.
Go online and read these things. Do they seem more dramatic than other weeks? I'm really starting to get sick of it. |
