Got a UHAUL reservation for the 1st? ***Don't count on it.****
Look - when you get a reservation, it doesn't mean ANYTHING.

Use PENSKE or Budget, or rent a camel.

Dont get screwed on moving day!

Update: Anton's MOVING has come highly recommended as convenient and affordable by [info]slickgothgurl

I know your pain all to well. UHaul sucks. I moved from Atlanta to Boston with them, and they screwed up my reservation (gave me a round-trip local rental agreement instead of a one-way), the truck was three hours late, and it broke down in North Carolina. Got a new truck, and that one broke down in New York City. In the rain. During rush hour. This was when I learned of the screwed up reservation because the NY Uhaul place refused to give me a new truck because I had "stolen" the original one.

I hate them with the fiery passion of 10,000 suns.

step 1: File complaint with better business bearueau
step 2: Post signs near local UHAUL locations warning unsuspecting customers

step 3: Contest any and all charges that UHaul made to your credit card, citing a total breach of service. Your CC company will help you fight them.

Not with U-haul specifically, but with plenty of other vendors. Haven't lost yet.

... and, if you do lose your credit card appeal for any reason, be prepared to drag them to small-claims court. You might get double or triple damages, if you can show fraud or bad faith.

Make sure you write everything down while it's fresh in your head. Everything.

co-signed. we moved from Springfield to Atlanta with Uhaul and it was about that bad. this time, as we move from Atlanta to Boston--we're going Budget (plus it was like $1500 cheaper.)

Yet still, so many unsuspecting customers waiting to get screwed.
They are such a big name, you would think better of them.

Somehow McDonalds is liable for spilling coffee but Uhaul goes relatively unscathed. They get sued routinely, but alas -- still profitable.

i've moved with uhaul four times in the past 7 years and never have had this trouble. one was a long distance NY-->MA move and nothing was wrong with the reservation, truck, or anything.

maybe it's because i wouldn't dare move in sepetmber? *shrug*

you need to call the BBB and report it. or just use their online form. sorry this has happened to you.

Everyone knows airlines book flights to 105% capacity.
They bank on at least 5% canceling or changing flight.
This is almost never a problem.

Uhaul books to an over-capacity that is uncomprehendible.
There were six of us in line, all yelling at the clerk for the same truck -- all of us overdue. It was a total mess.

Having done some research online, this is just par for the course.
They have routinely delivered dangerous moving trucks, and been sued OVER AND OVER again. Yet still, they make a profit.

So that I can rest at night, promise me you wont rent from them again.
Can you do that for me?

i promise!

if i move again, i'm using Anton's Movers out of newton. they moved me in february and they were amazing. on time, speedy, and got my stuff from one place to the next. and best of all, under $200, and all i had to do was pack and then unpack. totally stress free.

That's why I am using a truck from Zipcar for the second move in a row. Unless you're doing cross-country or something, U-Haul seems to be a big pain in the behind. Sorry for your horrible experience.

Preach it!!
I tired renting with U-Haul about 3 weeks ago. My "reservation" wasn't a reservation at all. I was told, after being on the phone with about 30 different people with U-Haul over the course of about 8 hours, that a reservation is actually a "request only fulfilled based on availability" I was told there was nothing they could do and there were NO trucks available within, I kid you not, a 100 mile radius of Tallahassee (where I was moving from). I know this for sure because U-Haul informed me that they couldn't call other stores to find out if they had any trucks, so I had to call them all. I called about 30 stores. No luck. So I went to my "preferred pick-up" location the morning that I was supposed to get the truck since my print out of my online reservation told me they were in charge of it now. When I got there I was told that regardless of what the e-mail, from their corporation, told me, they were not in charge of it and there was nothing they could do. After debating this with the manager for a while and asking him what else he could do for me, I was given nothing AND I was told to "get the hell out of this store!!"

...nice.

so I filed a complaint on their website, and then the return email said something like "Thank you for your comments, we will pass your form onto the store associated with your reservation." oh great, so you're going to send the message about the manager who swore and me and kicked me out of his store, to HIM??

such crap!!

no, the BBB does a lot of good. the ripoff report is a good site, but there are a lot of people on there who bitch about everything and anything. seriously, just file your report with them and see what happens. and i agree about calling your CC company and disputing the charges with them. $200 is a lot of money.

good luck!

Years ago, I made such a reservation only to be given a van instead of a truck because they were all out. My not-yet-husband and I moved our stuff together from Allston to Brookline over the course of 18 hours and a half hours because we had to make so many back and forth trips. At 2:30am, the sprinklers came on while were walking up and down the very, very long walkway from the front door to the truck. We had already started putting boxes on our office chair and moving them back and forth; the watering of the lawn meant we had to run and I wondered how many of our nice new neighbors hated us for the loud echoing of the chair wheels throughout the elegant courtyard. Yeah, uhaul. I've rather choke on glass. But your story? That's one of the worst I've ever heard. You have my sympathies.

I had a similar issue, having "reserved" a truck two years ago on the 31st of August. We got screwed out of the smaller truck and it took three hours to get a bigger one, but it actually worked out in the end. We needed the extra space.

However, between my experience, and those of friends like [info]kajivar, I'll never use U-Haul again.

I rented from Uhaul about a year ago for my brother. The dumbasses working at the Uhaul were so busy trying to get weed, they forgot to charge my CC. So we had the truck all day moving from Boston to Providence and Pawtucket and all it cost me was the $5 to reserve the truck and $3 for some tape. HAHA FUck UHUAL they suck ASSSSS!

i would just put it out there if people are looking to rent from a national company (rather than using a local moving company as mentioned above), that i HIGHLY recommend penske. i've moved once with uhaul and once with penske, and the difference was unbelievable. penske was efficient, polite, knowledgable, helpful, the truck was in great condition, and the prices were fair (especially with the AAA discount).
