I just wanted to pop in and let people know why I haven't been putting up the shows of the week... I have no computers to do it with. One died of old age, the CPU has finally made her last computation, far as I can tell... My last working computer caught fire in the cable will be getting a new power cable within a few days... so... That's why I dropped off the face of the planet. I will be able to get back to that soon. Sorry I've just vanished like this. I feel so out of touch.

Nicholas Smith in the news [31 May 2008|05:20pm]

(you need to scroll all the way to the bottom)

Is this a ballot box he sees before him?

News of an unlikely new union activist. Actor Nicholas Smith, best known as Mr Rumbold from TV's Are You Being Served?, tells me he is standing for election as president of the thespians' union, Equity. 'I've been a member of the council on and off for 22 years,' he says. 'And of course it's inevitable that at my age, there is less acting work than previously, so I have more time.'

If he wins, no doubt we can expect to see him at the next TUC lording it alongside the leaders of the T&G, Amicus and other unions.

Are You Being Viewed? - This week's episode - Dear Sexy Nickers [05 Apr 2008|08:24pm]

mirrani

Trivia
* Robert Raglan, who appears as "The Forty Inch Waist," regularly played the Colonel in Dad's Army, Jimmy Perry and David Croft's BBC1 sitcom about a Second World War Home Guard unit.

* The series is still developing here - the Gentlemen's and Ladies' departments aren't supposed to fraternize. Mrs. Slocombe has a soft spot for Mr. Lucas, and Mr. Humphries doesn't even know Miss Brahms' name.

* Early in the episode Mr. Humphries shows Mr. Lucas how to "knee" a jacket - break the stitches to it will feel roomier. This is a trick Jeremy Lloyd had picked up while working as a junior at Simpson's department store - though he's quick to point out that he would never suggest that any of Simpson's staff ever kneed a jacket.

Are You Being Viewed? - This week - Pilot [24 Mar 2008|06:52pm]

[ mood | ecstatic ]

Trivia

* This pilot episode was originally transmitted unexpectedly and without pre-publicity during the 1972 Munich Olympics. The massacre of Israeli Athletes by a Palestinian terrorist group led to the cancellation of several days' worth of events and the BBC ran the pilot in the place of the planned Olympic coverage. The episode was later repeated at the start of the first series.

* Though produced in color, this episode is now believed to survive only in black and white.

Are You Being Viewed? [20 Mar 2008|11:09pm]

Do you own the complete DVD set? Do you own the movie and/or Grace and Favour? Do you wish you had people who could watch with you, who understood what this show means to you? Are you waiting for someone to say "I'm free!" when you turn off the DVD player and mumble, "I wish I could talk to someone about that episode, it's my favorite!"? Now you can!

Okay, since no one else has offered to set something up, I'm willing to work out a schedule with everyone. If this offends the folks in charge here, then please let me know and I'll happily stand down.

Until then, let's say.. one episode a week? Start with the first episode and go in order as the DVD set allows.. skip the specials for now.. we can go back to that later if we decide to. Or do we want to go with the PBS schedule? That would allow folks without the DVD to jump right in, but I assume this will be different for local stations? Ours is showing Takeover (Episode 5 of Series 5) on Monday of next week. But this idea leaves out our friends in other spots across the pond. :(

I would like to give everyone the option of playing along, so if we, say... Post a starter topic on Fridays (I can do that unless told to do otherwise, it's no problem) then give everyone a chance all week to respond to it before starting on another episode? That ought to fit everyone's work schedule, no?

In case you are new and missed the idea behind this, several people were wishing to share comments on the show, some wanted to share the viewing experience, some were wondering the meaning of various phrases within the show. There was a short chat here about collectively viewing an episode a week where we could share these things and talk about our favorite comedy.

Who's with us?

Comments? Questions? Opinions? Ideas? A small fortune to give away? No on the last one huh? Story of my life. ;)

Hello [18 Mar 2008|04:53pm]

forever_python

Hello :)

I've been a huge fan of Are You Being Served for as long as I can remember (i'm 17). It's my favorite british comedy (followed closely by Monty Python). It's the first one I can remember watching on our PBS station, but then they took it off :( I was so glad when they decided to show it again and they still are.

I have the entire series on dvd, Are you Being Served? Again!, and the movie. I really want to buy the companion guide.

Favorite characters: it's a tie between Mr. Humphries and Mr. Lucas for the men.
                                    Mrs. Slocombe for the ladies.

I'm happy I found this community! :^D

I've been a huge fan of AYBS for a while now (since I discovered the show on PBS in the US). I just recently bought the "Are You Being Served? : The Complete Series 1-10" on DVD & am in the process of watching the specials with Mr. Humphries & his mom (who is visiting in Hollywood) & the tribute to the indefatigable Mollie Sugden on the occasion of her 80th birthday!

I realize that I am preaching to the choir here, but I absolutely LOVE LOVE LOVE this program! It is comedy at its very best. I say this while admitting that, being at a distinct disadvantage due to my "American-ness", I am at a loss as to what the characters are actually saying about a quarter of the time. I intend, however, to brush up on my British colloquialisms & history so as to become a more literate Brit-com fan!

As an aside, Mr. Humphries & Ms. Slocombe are my most very favorite AYBS characters, but I could not imagine this program without all the beyond-wonderful characters that make this series the honest-to-goodness treasure that it is!

I am so happy to find a place like this to share in all the AYBS love!!

:-)

I don't know if these people are members of this community, but to whoever has uploaded complete episodes of AYBS? to YouTube: YOU ARE MY HERO! Since being at university, I've gone through serious AYBS? withdrawals, and for the past couple of weeks, I've been watching a couple of episodes a day. I've watched my fave episodes several times already.

So in short, THANK YOU!

I am a AYBS junkie ! I admit it [02 Dec 2007|03:57pm]

Hello I have been a huge fan of AYBS for years. When I was a kid my grandparents and I used to watch it on Saturday nights when I stayed over and even after I was into my twenties when I stayed at my grandma's house on Saturdays we made a point of watching it and always commenting on Mrs Slocombe's hair and wondered what color it would be that week ! My husband and I have continued the tradition and now have the box set of the entire seris and are running through it now for the 2nd time and it is an absolute treat !

I was so sad to hear about John Inman's passing in March. But the terrific thing is that he will always have AYBS and his time in the show as a wonderful comic legacy for us all to enjoy. It is so refreshing to read about his relationships with the other actors and the fact that it seems for the most part they all LIKED each other and liked to spend time with each other outside the job. Too many times nowadays you hear about diva type behaviour and petty differences that crop up.

I always did like Trevor Bannister and Arthur English also. Mike Berry did a decent job especially on the Rock Star episode. But he couldnt compare to Mr Lucas in my opinion. And lets face it even though Nicholas Smith was daft on purpose in my opinion no one could have replaced HIM. And I am so glad that Young Mr Grace was given a larger presence on the show his phrase "You've all done very well" was classic !

If you're going to prevaricate, I shall kick you right in the middle of the gentlemen's department! [31 Oct 2007|12:58pm]

Always loved this quote from AYBS. How would you update it? Here's how it would sound in my workplace:

If you're going to prevaricate, I shall kick you right in the middle of IT!

Update: I found this picture of Diana King, who uttered the above quote as Mrs. Peacock, at the site for another Britcom:

Update on Mike Berry CD [10 Oct 2007|05:55pm]

From Ellen at Mike Berry's Official Website: He's re-recorded "Chason D'Amour" for his new Christmas single, to join "Hi There, Darlin!". There will be a 3rd track too, title TBA.

In Ellen's words: "Unlike his rendition in 'The Pop Star' Mike has sung it how it should be! This last episode gave people a taste of his music talents, but not a proper taste."

Straight from Ellen at the Mike Berry Homepage Mike's in the studio recording a new album to come out at the end of the year. If you forgot who he is, he played Bert Spooner ;)

Want to hear a sample of one of his songs? I've got one for you :)

It's a sample from his song Hi There, Darlin' and it's pretty awesome!

Download it, enjoy it...and if you really like it, let your local radio station know about it! Send the clip to the station or send them to my site to read more (more info will be posted as it comes out) or send them to Mike's official website to find out how they can get it to play on the air!

John had the last laugh on the taxman [03 Jul 2007|03:06am]

odogoddess
Preston comic John Inman has left nearly £3m in his will - and had the last laugh on the taxman.

The 71-year-old star of Are You Being Served, who died in March, left his fortune of £2.8m to his partner Ron Lynch, 54, who will not have to pay out £1m in inheritance tax because the couple had a civil ceremony in December 2005.

Had the pair not had the ceremony, the taxman would have taken 40% of everything the actor left over the £285,000 inheritance tax limit at the time of his death...
