Nerding it Up With Conan

LOL! Anybody else in North America catch the AtLA ref on Conan just now?

For those unfamiliar, one of the occasional skits on Late Night With Conan O'Brien is called "Nerding it Up for Pierre," where our favorite pompador'd host and late night geek lord "translates" a boring-ish mainstream current event for one of his dweebiest graphic designers, Pierre Bernard, by comparing the event to something that's happened in recent sci-fi or manga storylines. Star Trek, Lost, Bablyon, Galactica, and Star Wars have all been used to explain mundane things to Pierre in the past.

(IDK what it says about me that I always understand exactly what the uber-geek version is talking about, but I digress…)

Tonight Conan was geek-speaking on the Republican National Convention by comparing VP choice Sarah Palin's sudden ascent to stardom (appearing out of the frozen northern state of Alaska, surprising the world, only to rise to supreme power at McCain's side) to that of "Aang and his flying bison, Appa, when they broke free from the iceberg in Avatar: the Last Airbender."

They both pronounced the A in "Appa" short like in "cat," and I'm pretty sure Conan said Avadar, but whatevs. It made me grin.

Where Do We Go From Here
Greeting fellow Avatards. I come to you tonight tired, feeling funky in the belly, and in a contemplative mood. Summer is over with as far as you and I are concerned and that means soon we'll have a new season of television programs upon us. I still can't believe it's been over a month since Avatar officially ended. I know by now the American fans have absorbed and meta'd the finale and the series as a whole. I myself still can't believe how fast the last three years have gone by. Network television didn't hold the appeal that Nick held with Avatar. Once I, and many other like me, got hooked on Avatar there was no going back. We were determined to see the series to the end. Well, now it's far past the end and we're left with Friday nights devoid of Avatar. Sure we have fan fiction, fan art, and graphics to keep us tied to the series but we don't have anything new to look forward to on a regular basis. We have the movies and the possible shorts to discuss and debate but those are a long time coming. What about the immediate future the here and now? What about this upcoming television season? Where do we as a fandom go from here?

This is what I, as a casual fan, have been thinking about since the three week period since the series end had come and gone. It was during that time frame that I began to start seeing advertisements for a new series scheduled to begin airing on Fridays in October. The more I saw these ads the more I wondered if that series could fill the spot on Fridays once held by Avatar. Of course, it helps that those advertisements were being shown during the Olympics. And so fellow Avatards, I started to wonder what I and other fans of the series who followed Avatar from beginning to end will follow now? Will we as a fandom turn to another animated series to supplement our Avatar time? Will we reach out to Japanese animation or will it be American made? If it's not animation will it be something from one of the so called big four networks or will yet another cable channel catch our attention? Or, will we forgo trying to follow a series and remain online keeping a close eye on the fan fiction, fan art, videos, and graphics related to the series? Will we as fans try to desperately hang on to what we felt for the past three years or will we try and experience those feelings all over again with something new? I know we as fans won't totally give up being Avatards but the question remains where do we go from here?

What are you going to do now that we're without Avatar every Friday before we go through the summer break and weeks of AWS?

That series I mentioned being advertised during the Olympics, I'm definitely going to give it a shot. I mean who would have ever guessed NBC would put together a series based on Robinson Crusoe? It's no Avatar but it's definitely something new and different.

Avatarded moment, dudes
My mum's a community mental health nurse. The doctor on their team is called Aang. His kids are avatards.

Yeah, I just thought I'd share.

I really want her to ask him if he knows anyone called 'Zuko'.

Or if he's secretly an airbender XD
