Off-Theme [May. 13th, 2008|11:31 pm]

[music |Colbert Report]

Today is my birthday, so I figured I'd share some songs.
First is The Cruxshadows' aptly named Birthday from Dreamcypher. A nice goth/electronica/darkwave/whatever you want to call it song about how your birthday might be the last day of your life.
Then we have the acoustic version of Within Temptation's What Have You Done. Very piano heavy and no male vocals in this version.
D'espairs Ray's Garnet  from coll:set is an odd metal jrock song because has the most singalonable outro.
Nightwish's 7 Days to the Wolves from Dark Passion Play has grown on me so much since the album came out, the energy in the song just makes you want to sing/scream along and head bang.

OFF THEME: Get a job! [May. 5th, 2008|09:38 pm]

baseballchica03
It's that time of year again, when thousands of twenty-somethings across the country are thinking What Do You Do With a BA in English/It Sucks to Be Me [buy Avenue Q]. I asked the Great and Powerful iTunes what I might do with my life, and it came up with a few suggestions for possible career paths.

1) Pirate - By far my favorite suggestion of the bunch, I could take a cue from The Last Saskatchewan Pirate and sail the high seas Great Lakes as a pirate, plundering and pillaging and wearing puffy shirts. I just need to teach my cat to talk (and sit on my shoulder). [buy Captain Tractor] Then I thought, 'Who gives a damn if all the jobs are gone? I'm gonna be a pirate on the River Saskatchewan!'

2) Republican - I'm a political scientist, and my job prospects would double if I decided that I Wanna Be a Republican! I could whore myself out to the highest bidder instead of finding a campaign or interest group whose values I actually believe in. I'd be sure to find a job in politics then. [buy Kinsey Sicks] I'm tired of thinking about you when it's all about me, me, me, me!

3) Food Service - I could, of course, become a Waitress for some extra cash. Busking only gets you so far, I suppose. And there's always the fast food industry! I could be a McDonald's Girl, working at the counter, serving greasy food to Little Leaguers. [buy The Waifs || buy The Buffalo Chips] Everything I want's getting further out of reach, like a funky little apartment down on Bondi. || I am in love with a McDonald's girl. She is an angel in a polyester uniform.

4) Cubicle Drone - Fodder for so many comics, movies, and television shows. I'm certain that it's not nearly as interesting as Office Space and The Office makes it seem. Why, I'd never be able to wear my Blue Jeans on a regular basis again! *sniff* [buy Eddie from Ohio] Why suit up for stuffy places? Damn this shaving our legs and faces! Funny how this routine erases peace of mind.

5) Apprentice - I was unfortunately Born Too Late to work with some pretty cool people, but I could maybe be an apprentice. I'd do all the grunt work for someone for several years in the hopes that someday their name would help me find a good job and get me out of this place. (Oh, wait, that's what I did in grad school. Scratch that one.) [buy The Clarks] William, will you teach me how to write? Cassius, will you show me how to fight? And Thomas, hey, I think I see the light!

6) Baseball Player - Despite lacking the requisite talent and boyparts for MLB, I could totally play Centerfield or Right Field. That'd be awesome! I mean, it's just catching and throwing and all that, right? If you believe what the songs tell you, it can't be TOO hard. ;) [buy John Fogerty || buy Peter, Paul, and Mary] I spent some time in the Mudville nine, watching it from the bench. || Then I'd awake from this long reverie and pray that the ball never came out to me.

7) Stripper - Hey, if Mark Addy can shake his ass to You Can Leave Your Hat On, then I could do it, too! [buy Garou || If you've never seen it, go out and get The Full Monty this very second!] You give me reason to live, you give me reason to live, you give me reaaassooon to liiiiiiive!

8) Matchmaker - I could work hard every day of my life trying to find sad, lonely people Somebody To Love. Hey, I've got a track record, even! Do you want references? It would, of course, cut down on the writing of awesome, sweeping, epic songs about lack of love, but it's a sacrifice we'll just have to make. [buy Queen] At the end of the day I take home my heartache all my own.

9) International Super Spy - International superspy, yeah, that's the ticket! I could be all, "The Name's Bond... James Bond." Except, y'know, with my own name instead. I mean, how many jobs are out there that net you your own theme song?! [buy James Bond DISCLAIMER: Daniel Craig not included] Doo doo doo DOO doo doo, doo doo, doo doo doo doo.

10) Unidentifiable Fuzzy Russian Creature - Oh, like it's any more unlikely that I'll be Чебурашка than any of these other options! Eta ya, Cheburashka! Er, I mean eta ya [info]baseballchica03. :) [buy Cheburashka and His Friends] Не знаю я. *sadface*

So, I've been kinda disappointed with the output for this week's theme, so I'm gonna gush about MF Doom.

Daniel Dumile, (pronounced DOOM-uh-lay) variously known as Zev Love X of KMD (Kausin' Much Damage), Viktor Vaughn, King Geedorah, etc. etc, is one of the most accomplished and proficient underground hip hop musicians around today.  Perhaps his best known work is the Adult Swim themed album "Dangerdoom" that he made with DJ Dangermouse.

I like Doom a whole lot because he has such an incredible way with words, finds the most random-ass samples to use, and interestingly, hardly ever refers to himself in 1st person.  He has the most incredible flow, and really has a train of thought that's sometimes hard to follow

MF Doom- Kookies

MF Doom as King Geedorah- "The Fine Print"
(from the album Take me To Your Leader)

Just one track this week from me,

Coffee - Aesop Rock featuring John Darnielle

Yeah that's right, John Darnielle, bet you didn't expect the guy from the MOUNTAIN GOATS to show up during hip hop week?! but if you haven't heard his fantastic final verse on Aesop Rock's "Coffee" you're really missing out. He doesn't exactly 'rap' per se, but just does his usual nasally, sing-speak thing over some pretty hot beats. He just imbues the whole song with a lot of maniacal paranoia even if he's only on it for the last 45 seconds. Oh and hey there's even a "1967 colt 45" reference, which makes my geeky heart recall "Going to Georgia".

OH and to top it all off JD becomes zombified in the must video. holy crap, it's epic!

Hip Hop [May. 4th, 2008|06:04 pm]

Just one for this theme from me.

I know there are a ton of other Australians on this community, but for non-Australians, one of the seminal songs of the Australian music scene is 'I Was Only 19' by Redgum. It was written after John Schumann spoke with veterans of the Vietnam war about their wartime experiences, and combines affecting sentiment with an earthy Australian idiom.
"Then someone called out 'Contact!' and the bloke behind me swore
And we hooked in there for hours, then a God-almighty roar
Frankie kicked a mine, the day that mankind kicked the moon.
God help me, he was going home in June."

In 2005, Sydney hip-hop group the Herd, with the assistance of Schumann and the approval of various Vietnam vets reworked the song for the youth radio station Triple J's 'Like a Version' series. Once again, it expresses universal sentiments in an easily accessible medium, and produces a song with surprisingly broad appeal - even for those who, like me, aren't big hip hop fans. I hope you love it as much as I do!

Hip Hop: Nerdcore [May. 2nd, 2008|11:00 am]

noctolator
Download Nerdcore! (zip of 4 mp3s)

The first nerdcore I ever heard was M.C. Hawking.

Ken Leavitt-Lawrence, known as MC Hawking, is a nerdcore hip hop artist who parodies gangster rap and theoretical physicist Stephen W. Hawking. MC Hawking gained some popularity in the early 2000s, largely due to the availability of his music on the Internet. Each of his raps are synthesized by the now defunct commercial text-to-speech program WillowTalk. The songs were originally released in MP3 format, but due to the popularity of the website, MC Hawking got a record deal with Brash Music to release a "greatest hits" album, known as A Brief History of Rhyme

I have included the track Crazy as Fuck from this compilation.

Andrew Robert Nielsen (born October 6, 1982) is an American rapper, known by his stage name MC Lars. He is the self-proclaimed originator of "post-punk laptop rap". He has collaborated with many different artists, including Non-Phixion's Ill Bill and nerdcore rapper MC Chris, and was one of the first underground rappers to sample and reference post-punk and emo bands.

In 2006, he released the single "Download This Song" with it entering the Australian Singles Chart at number 29.

I have included "Internet Relationships" (featuring "A Scholar and a Physician") off his 2005 album, The Graduate (itself a parody of the Kanye West album College Dropout)

MC Paul Barman is a rapper from Ridgewood, New Jersey, who attended Brown University. "Enter Pan-Man," from his self-produced 7-inch Postgraduate Work (Househusband Records, 1998), attracted the attention of Prince Paul, and the two collaborated, releasing the It's Very Stimulating EP in 2000 on Wordsound. Paullelujah! followed in late 2002, with production by Prince Paul, MF DOOM, MikeTheMusicGuy and Phofo. He has appeared on records with Deltron 3030 and Masta Ace, and has toured with Del tha Funkee Homosapien and Blackalicious. One of his most memorable works was the song “Housemate Troubles,” released on Matador Records, a scathing commentary on the modern social pressures of co-habitation. MC Paul Barman was the first to prominently feature palindromes in his rhymes, most notably the track "Bleeding Brain Grow" from 2002's Paullelujah!, produced by Prince Paul. Some palindromes from the entire Paullelujah! album include: "Rev. Love Evolver"; "Cormega, Cage, Mr. O.C."; "Kosovo's OK". His longest and most impressive palindrome is the following name check: "Mika, RZA, Evil JD. Nasir is Osiris and J-Live, AZ, Rakim".

I have included Salvation Barmy from the It's Very Stimulating EP.

Damian Hess (born December 3, 1973), known by stage name MC Frontalot, is a San Francisco hip hop musician and self-proclaimed "world's 579th greatest rapper." He is best known in nerdcore hip hop and video game culture, for naming the nerdcore subgenre, and performing at Penny Arcade's annual Expo. In 2000 he released the song "Nerdcore Hiphop". From the first words spoken ("initiating startup sequence") to the countless references to a proud geekish lifestyle and nerdly leanings ("pish posh, man, I come as wack as I like!"), the song became an immediate hit in the geek and nerd communities. The rap subgenre of nerdcore hip hop, which had been around though unnamed beforehand, embraced the title and has since been expanding rapidly.

Many consider Hess, if not the founder of nerdcore, certainly the man who shone the torch on it. The man himself however is quick to point out the many artists who came before him and those which he considers his peers, as illustrated on his information webpage. On March 18, 2002, popular webcomic Penny Arcade declared Frontalot their official rapper, directing fans to his website.[4] He has acknowledged that that single act made his popularity skyrocket. In appreciation, he wrote and recorded the "Penny Arcade Theme" a few months later, which was in his own (tongue-in-cheek) words: "an attempt to cash in on their huge and devoted audience."

I have included the song "Indier Than Thou" from the album Nerdcore Hiphop. You can download all kinds of Frontalot at this link.

Here we are at the end of April and I'm back with the month's selection of songs. It's long. I got really, um, wordy at times this month. If you're looking at this post just for the songs, feel free to wade through without reading. :) Otherwise, I hope you guys enjoy this month as much as the ones in the past.

As always, I'm posting the days in reverse order since it is easier for me that way.

[ETA: Ha! I just tried to post this and apparently I was so wordy this month that the post is too large! I'll have to divide it into two. Apologies!]

Wide selection of songs behind the cut, including, but not limited to, Tori Amos, Marty Willson-Piper, Dashboard Confessional, REM, Wrens, Jesus Christ Superstar, Dory Previn, Jennifer Niceley, Peter Gabriel, a spoken word poem by Anne Sexton, Moonbabies, The New Tragedies, Josh Ritter, Ryan Adams, Dolly Parton, Amy Grant, Vienna Teng, Madonna, Bryan Adams, Indigo Girls, Over the Rhine, Death Cab for Cutie, Drag the River, and more )

Thanks, everyone! Enjoy and buy some albums!

I flipped through the posts and was surprised not to find this one already posted. It is the first song that leaped into my mind when I saw the topic.

What Is This Feeling? (Loathing) from Wicked: The Musical
BUY WICKED: THE MUSICAL

With simple utter loathing
There's a strange exhilaration
In such total detestation
It's so pure, so strong!
Though I do admit it came on fast
Still I do believe that it can last
And I will be loathing
Loathing you
My whole life long!
