Challenge Submission Thread
Have an idea for a challenge? Place it here! Atlantis runs off of the recommendations of our citizens. Remember to keep your submissions inside the rules and all should be fine. However there are rules for this:

// Do not whine if your challenge has yet to be done. There is no order to the recommendations, and they are chosen when the council feels like it. If you whine at all or nag your recommendation will be removed.
// Do not condem anyone for their recommendations. If you decide that you do not like anothers idea and bash on it, your recommendation will be deleted.
// Your idea might have already been used in a previous challenge. Thus it will not be done, and refer to rule one.
// All recommendations must be under PG-13. Atlantis is a family place, everyone.
// If you have multiple ideas then please post them into one comment. It is easier browsing for the moderators and other citizens.
// Season 2 recommendations are allowed. We are S2 friendly :)

more to be added if needed.

Well, I haven't been able to track down my other post. Maybe it was on the other SG icon challenge comm I'm on... so confused!

ANYway:

colour challenges (colours of the rainbow, black and white, two specific colours, etc.) where the icon can either be in those colours, have something in them of that colour, or some way represent that colour (I did a "red" icon with Rodney bleeding from The Eye/The Storm)

episode challenges -- supplied screencaps, etc.

guest challenges -- supplied screencaps using guest/cameo characters (example: Kolya from The Eye/The Storm, Brotherhood; Caldwell from recent episodes, etc.) or pic your own screencaps from an episode -- either way.

mood challenges -- angry, happy, sad, etc.

scenery challenges -- no people in pictures, etc.

more lyric challenges -- we could suggest songs (request that lyrics always be printed IN the challenge, since surfing lyric sites can be hazardous to your computer's health...)

single supplied image challenge -- one screencap, anything goes but everyone has to use the same screencap :)

I'll add more if I can come up with them. :)

I would like to second all of [info]g_shadowslayer's ideas!

I would like to add to the scenery challenge, how about a prop challenge? Like you have to use candles or a window in your icon.

Quotes Challenge

Basically same as the Lyrics challenege, you pick a quote and have to make an icon for that quote. Everyone can either do the same quote or a quote on a theme. Film quotes like the Monty Python Challenge?

thats all from me for now

Probably a stupid idea, but I'll mention it anyway. =P There have been at least five actors that have been on both SG-1 and Atlantis, why not make a challenge for those characters? Of course there's McKay, and Weir, but there are some others who played different characters. Weir boyfriend, Simon, was Narim in a number of SG-1 episodes; Holling (I think that's his name -- that tall Athosian guy with the kid named Jinto) was the the season 7 episode "Revisions"; the leader of the children in the episode "Childhood's End" (the one who was going to kill himself in the ceremony) was Lt. Elliot in a few SG-1 episodes, too.

Oh, I just had another idea. You couuld do something with the first Weir (the blonde one) and our current Weir. Maybe an icon for each, and we vote on the set we like best.

This is Saeva, as you know, I'm just too lazy to switch over and will probably forget to do this again if I wait until I'm switched over to do it later!

Now, the way I see it if you're stuck with a limited source material, and a reasonably finite amount of images to icon from, the key isn't finding more interesting images, as that might not be possible, but in making the images you have more interesting. Over at [info]100x100_awards they've taken that idea and run with it by making contests that focus on exactly that, the interesting things you can do with icons that might not be typical but can lead to pretty fantastic results.

Thus, my suggestions are as follows:

01. Atypical crops. Anything that isn't the normal body to face focus you see in your average icon. Like non-100x100 icons it's a rare breed, but interesting.

02. The best use of blank space. A lot of icons are crowded because people think that more equals better but sometimes leaving a stark space in contrast really works.

03. Repetitive images. This is hit and miss for a lot of people, but working with reusing a single image in the same icon can lend to a new results.

04. You give us a stock image, like of city lights, and we have to apply it to a cap anyway we'd like.

I could come up with a few more, but those are the ones off the top of my head that I'd like to see doing. And which I might do over at [info]stargate_still in the future.

- Andrea.

Maybe one week it's strictly humor? As in so serious/angsty stuff. I'll try to think of more when my brain's actually working. :)

Ok, what about group themes? One week, it could be focused on the women of SGA, or the men of SGA, the Athosians, the military, the scientists, the Wraith, Genii, etc etc....

A theme where all the icons have to be textless. No words, only pics.

Icons that can only be made from seasons' one and two promo photos.

Icons that can only be made using shots of the city, Puddle Jumpers, or other Atantean tech.

Different styles: comic book style, black and white photos, pop-culture art, etc...

Using quotes or one specific quote from a particular episode or character.

Ooh, and what about one where we have to use caps of characters with funny facial expressions?

suggestion #1
wallpaper challange. i KNOW this is for icons, but maybe we could have a wallpaper challange once a month, or once a few months. i think there's a lack of sga wallpapers around. :)

suggestion #2
a lirical challange that would ask those participating to use ALL all the lyrics provided, for an icon set (make as many icons as it takes). i used to do this for LOTR icons, and it's great fun, kinda like telling a story. or suggest a theme, and ppl should come up with their own lyrics for the icon set.

challenge ideas

variations on a theme here. Basically, pulling out from the realm of the favorites we tend to concentrate on and looking to more of Atlantis.

1) Tribute challenge. Icons for those characters who have died during the series (or that we're never likely to see again, like Bates).

2) Unknown Heros. Icons for characters in the show who we see doing things but are never named and have no speaking parts.

3) Apply a regular theme challenge and then add the stipulation that no main character may be used in that theme.

4) Security Detail, Infirmary Rush, Geekdom Heaven, Administration Zone -- different concentrations of a week for ideas/charcters/icons from that realm only.

5) Athosian Concentration. Any Athosian but Teyla (or not Teyla alone).

6) Visitation. Exemplify a place/people that Atlantis has visited on their travels.

one more on that theme. Knew I was forgetting something earlier...

7) Enemies of Atlantis. Up to the iconer's imagination for what that could be. ^^

"Still Life" challenge. The icon version of a still life painting - no people, only inanimate objects. A weapon lying on a table, alien artifacts, the stuff sitting on someone's desk, etc.

"Mirror Image" challenge. Some part of the picture must be mirrored in the icon.

"Not 100x100" challenge. At least two sides of the icon must be less than 100 pixels. (smaller crop on a 100x100 white background doesn't count)

"200x200" challenge. I know, these can't be used as LJ icons, but I saw this challenge done somewhere else, and it produces lots of really cool results. They're almost like tiny wallpapers. :)
