Non-Genre Films that Fans Love

  • Apr. 29th, 2008 at 11:40 PM

My latest show (#26a  May 2008) is now on-line from ARISIA 2008. It was the panel NON-GENRE FILMS THAT FANS LOVE.

This was a popular panel with suggestions from both the panel members and the audience.  I have provided a list of the films mentioned.

There is a link to the streaming Real Player video, and a link to the audio only mp3.

There's every chance I could look this up, but I know you folks know already:

Say there will be three of us, who will need either two separate sleeping areas coming to Arisia next year. What's cheaper all together, to go with a suite, or regular but adjoining rooms? What if a fourth person (and third separate sleeping area, couch might be okay) were added? What's cheaper then?

I figure the Hyatt's got info on its website, but that things change for the con.

Huzzah!

Harrassment policy?

  • Apr. 23rd, 2008 at 8:13 PM
Does Arisia have a harrassment policy in place? It might be a good idea to adopt one, if it doesn't already exist.

Volunteering for Somerville Open Studios

  • Apr. 15th, 2008 at 2:07 AM
By now, if you're local to the Boston Area,  you might have heard that Somerville Open Studios is coming up in just a couple short weeks, on Sat. and Sun., May 3 + 4.

Many familiar faces from Arisia have been working on SOS this year. The Con Chair Event Coordinator, [info]palmwiz, for instance, might look familiar to a few of you. ;-)   Also, [info]roozle, [info]cintyber, [info]muffyjo, and [info]kirkcudbright, to name a few.

If you're a fan of SOS and enjoy visiting studios each year, perhaps you might like to lend a hand to its running, too? Every year thousands of visitors see hundreds of artists in their studios, and the event to pulled off by the efforts of scores of volunteers. But the artists who help run the event are all in their studios the whole time! We could use a few dozen supporters who are not opening their studios, and who could help out for an hour or so during the hours of SOS.

If this might be you, please drop me a line for more information.

Hundreds of Somerville Artists thank you!

Have Fun,

Rachel Mello

Fantastic Dimensions #3 - Arisia 2008

  • Apr. 6th, 2008 at 11:36 PM
The third edition of Fantastic Dimensions, shot at [info]arisia  2008, has been posted.

Contained therein you’ll find videographic evidence of the treacherous Scaling of Mount Arisia, complete with a delightful interview with the ever entertaining [info]capybaron , aka Robert Luoma. You will also find yourself witnessing selected snippets of the Mad Scientist Laugh Contest. The inmates in charge of this particular asylum were Mark A. Mandel (immoderator), Howard Beatman, Mario di Giacomo and [info]zyxwvut , aka Eric “in the Elevator” Zuckerman. By the way, if you're interested in the insane entirety of the Mad Scientist Laugh Contest, please drop me a note.

Only one interview this time around, so I think I’ve strayed from original premise of presenting to you my favorite part of conventions, my fellow fans. Look for more of that sort of content in future episodes, from Balticon, Readercon, Gaylaxicon , Denvention, and the Totally Normal Event.

Late, not never!

  • Apr. 6th, 2008 at 10:28 PM
I've finally uploaded some of my Arisia 2008 pix to Flickr. You'll find some Masquerade, some Goblin Ball, and some shots of the elevators just as their hyperspace drives kicked in.

Looking to make my own props

  • Apr. 2nd, 2008 at 1:32 PM
This past Arisia, I attended an excellent panel on making props with rubber, latex and casting.

A Jayne (Firefly) cosplayer talked about a product called "smooth on" by a brand named "oomu." I'd really like to work with the stuff, but I can't find a retailer. Can someone please point me in the right direction? Thanks!

Bands at Arisia?

  • Mar. 31st, 2008 at 1:51 PM
I've heard through the grapevine that Arisia has had Friday night musical guests, like Boiled in Lead. Is this something we could attempt again? Keep the Saturday night club dance, but try to get a great fan act like Jonathan Coulton or something for Friday? They could also be part of a music panel or two, time permitting.

I know budgeting is an issue, but if someone had an in with a local act like Freezepop, etc., perhaps we could get someone for a reasonable rate.

Thoughts? Practicalities? Logistical problems?

I feel like I ask you all too many questions, but I'm a curious sort, forgive me!

Thanks

Climbing Mt. Arisia Sherpas

  • Mar. 18th, 2008 at 7:57 PM
Greetings!

If you were a Sherpa for the "Climbing Mt. Arisia" event, I'd like to find out your name.

I'm working on a video about Arisia 2007 in which that event figures prominently, and I'd like to ID you (if you'd like).

In particular, there was a gent at the bottom in a somewhat Nehru styled shirt, and another gent 1/2 way up with a backpack and a couple of trekking poles.

You can contact me through LJ.

Thanks! See you in 2008.
