Chapter 13
Sora licked his lips and then stuck his tongue out from between his teeth, crouching between two very large wheels. It was horrifying, this work, sitting here when at any moment he could get crushed by half a ton of solid angry machine. He was covered in oil and sweat and directly above him, Tidus was happily sipping some ice water and having the time of his life.
Finally Sora stuck his head up and glared at him. "You wanna give me a hand or what?"
Tidus took a long sip of his water, considered his answer carefully, then replied, "Can't. I'm on strict orders not to do anything while I'm at your house. Nothin' strenuous. Your mom's orders, not mine!"
"Bah," Sora mumbled. "You're all better, it's not like you broke anything. C'mon down here and hold this thing for me."
Tidus sighed, and put his water down at last, before sliding into place next to Sora, their shoulders rubbing against each other. "Where?"
"Right there." Sora pointed. Tidus leaned over him, and held it, while Sora took a wrench and tightened another gadget. They were so close... and Tidus, as usual, smelled delicious. He couldn't tighten the damn knut fast enough. Finally! He dropped the wrench to the grass and turned to Tidus, pulling him close to give his mouth a firm, thankful kiss.
Tidus returned his kiss, lustily, his heart pounding in his ears until he let go of him. He stood up slowly, climbing out between the huge wheels of their vehicle. He pulled Sora up next to him and stood on the seat. Sora tilted his head back to look at the sky, but his normally happy eyes somewhat narrowed before growing large. "Tidus... look!"
Tidus angled his head upward, as a hard wind blew over them suddenly. The sky, which had been so bright and so blue, was slowly being swallowed by an inexplicable darkness. It was not clouds, nor storm, nor any other plague that blocks out the light. No, it was as if from the very sky the light were being "taken", as if someone were extinguishing the color from the world.
"Oh my god," Tidus said. It was the most logical thing to say at the moment, but he wasn't a very religious person at all. He jumped down from the machine and ran across the street, standing there in perfect view of the sky. Sora ran up beside him. "What's going on?"
They looked at each other, trembling. They felt the coldness, the horrible fear. The saw the color leave each other's face, all except their eyes, which seemed to be brighter than ever in this darkness. On the air, they heard a soft voice - a good-bye. Then a thick, treacherous laughter.

He was riding on his mother's ship again. She sailed it skillfully, manuevered it over the fickle waves. He didn't feel right. He wanted this tiny sailing vessel to rise out of the waves and glide into the stars. But the emptiness in his chest would weigh him down, like a heavy stone. He clutched at his heart, heard the promising whisper of the voice inside of him - soon, freedom. Soon, retribution. All these things promised to him, and more.
The nimble craft bumped against the docks of the home island. He looked up at the sky again, and saw that it was not brilliant, hurting blue, but grey. He'd had to wear a heavy black shirt today and a hat to cover his eyes. He despised hats, but his mother insisted on this outing. She smiled at him, worryingly, for that was her way. But he was beyond her help now.
He disembarked and stood, a little uneasy on solid land. He didn't feel right. The darkness... everything so grey. So beautiful. He walked past, drawing his sword with very little unhappiness. He actually laughed. "Stay there, Captain Mom. I have some business to take care of here."
He walked the streets. People were outside, looking at him. They knew him by name. He didn't pay any attention to anyone, not when they called his name. But only one person would dare step in front of him, even after it all.
Not his mother.
Not Sora.
Kairi. She stood there like a soldier, her shoulders back, her long hair flying with the wind. He gave her one look and whispered, "Get out of my way. I don't have time for you anymore."
"I know what you are after, but I tell you it's no use. He'll still forgive you if you leave this all behind you and go back to him. That's all he wants."
"I'm not 'all' that he wanted."
"I don't care how you interpret my words. Just listen to me and take them to heart! Do you even have a heart anymore?" Kairi's voice took on a biting edge. She was angry and had every right to be. He didn't visit her anymore. He didn't answer his phone. She wasn't a part of his life. She was helping them...
"Kairi." He stepped toward her. He held out his hands, tipping his head back to look at her. He slowly took off his hat to bathe in the darkness. She began to step backward. "Riku... what's happened to you?"
"I'm free, Kairi... that means you can't stop me or try to talk me down out of anything. You can't talk down TO me. Get out of my way."
"Riku..." Kairi looked at him. Her fiery red hair was still bright. She seemed to glow from her very eyes, down to her very simple white dress that hung off her somewhat voluptuous hips around her ankles. "Please don't do this. You have only one chance. Don't waste it."
"It's too late for us all, Kairi. Can't you see it around you? Your world as it is, falling apart. Tidus is just one little person in a universe of countless worlds. He doesn't matter to me. Why should you?"
"Because I love you. I love you like a friend. But I guess friendship means just as little in a universe of countless worlds, doesn't it? Compared to all that you've been promised, right? Nothing has any value compared to what you can have... and what you lost." Kairi closed her eyes at once, and held her hands as though in prayer.
Riku trembled. His eyes flickered with the faintest hint of regret. But he shook his head. "Get out of my way. I'll hurt you if I have to."
"You already have," she whispered, brokenly, before slowly stepping aside. She didn't look at him, as if the very sight of him was repulsive.
Riku walked past her, heading straight for Sora's house.
