Election [13 Oct 2008|08:19am]

uepianogirl
I will be so glad when the election is finally over....it seems like this time around the debates and the mud-slinging has gone on forever! It seems like you can't hardly have a conversation with someone without the mention of one or both of the candidates and the upcoming election. I'm also starting to get irritated with people who consider everyone who doesn't agree with them as "uneducated" or "stupid." Everyone is entitled to their own opinions, including the people who don't agree with them!

Sorry...just had to get that out...

The Essence of a Musician..... [12 Oct 2008|11:36pm]

Quoted from the Introduction of "Interpreting Mozart on the Keyboard", by Badura-Skoda.....

“The problem of musical interpretation must be as old as music itself. Put at its simplest, it is the problem of leaving the listener with the most powerful, direct, deep and lasting impression possible. This is expressed in the classical legend of Orpheus, whose songs have a miraculous effect, whose playing is so moving and enchanting that it overcomes the gods and even death itself. The ultimate goal of all musical activity is to make an impression on the soul of the listener. That is the goal, but the way to it is a long and uncertain one. There are indeed a few favorites of Fortune for whom at first everything seems automatically to go right; but in the long run they, too, find that art is the result of hard work and often suffering- or even, quite often, of a process of destruction (illness, sin) that blights the soul and lays it bare. The essence of artistry lies in the power to create, to love, and the desperate need to communicate- the path is ‘infinite pains’. The chequered careers of these ‘favoured’ artists are no reflection of their degree of vocation. Nor can the essence of greatness, of creativity, be wholly communicated of passed on, and ultimate perfection in playing remains a secret reserved for the moment of performance.
But one thing is common to artists of all ages; they were not born finished artists- their path was that of effort and endurance. Disappointment lies in store for anyone who thinks that all he has to do is to wait passively for the moment of enlightenment. Favoured of not, he who wishes to achieve anything must seek to exploit his talents to the full and to increase his knowledge……
… [C.P.E.] Bach said:

A musician cannot move others unless he, too, is moved: He must of necessity feel all of the effects that he hopes to arouse in his audience…”

I find that this accurately depicts the greatest obstacle to becoming a musician. Sure, we can spend hours perfecting our technique and learning the notes, but if we do not live, how can we become that “medium” which channels music to the listener. If you’ve never experienced great sadness, or overflowed with joy, how can you portray that, how can you share that with the listener?
My greatest inspiration in music has always been the low points in my life. I don’t hide from them, I embrace them. By remembering my past, I can share my art and my life.

It is true that music is our lives, but really, our lives are our music.

Some new gems from work:

Finally, something juicy on P, the guy who was making advances (?) on me in July. He never struck me as one of the weirdos, just a kooky old guy. To his great credit, he told me the stories himself, but that diminishes his "libraryness" somewhat. Self-awareness automatically excludes you from the nut club.

Basically, he's gotten drunk at work three times, lol. Once there was a party for someone, and he had too much to drink and got back to work two hours later smashed. Another time he found some Schnapps on an upper level and drank it straight. Can't remember the third time.

This was all many years ago, and he's a teetotaler now.

I spent the last 45 minutes at work on Friday with P and B trading stories.

I implored B for more Mark stories, but all I got were the ones he's told a thousand times over. Mark hates Latin American women because his wife was an Argentinean, someone (him? sounds like it) once told Mark Buenos Aires means "nice breezes" in Spanish and he shouted, "That's where the bitch was born!", Mark wanted to ask G out and asked my dear H for advice and she said, "Just ask her." (roffles), "Mark, you took the vows 'in sickness and in health, to love and to cherish"..."I was drunk!". Only new thing is the context of a story I'd heard before. His daughter was getting married, and someone asked how he's going to put up with the ex and her family at the wedding and he said something like, "I'm paying for this bitch, I don't have to invite them!"

I mentioned the $2 beer during Tulk's Happy Hour.

B: "You wouldn't find your Americans like Budweiser, would you?"

"No, but there's Argentinean beer, which I'm sure Mark Jackson would love."

He really liked that one.

He also got happy when I told him I always imagined Jackson looking like Mark Latham, and after finally seeing a photo it turned out to be true.

I'm sure this is all boring to most of you, but I feel the need to set these stories down.

M can't even get B to make eye contact with him. I told him when I saw him Saturday night before he got on stage that it didn't happen with me until last Thursday, and to talk about politics, footy, and Mark Jackson.

I officially cannot concentrate. Maybe I've developed ADD. Haha.
Because seriously, it took me about 4 hours to read an article and do a few questions for English today, because I kept getting that distracted.
FAIL.

EDIT: My white-out pen leaked on my desk. Not good.

This month is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and Cookie Lee has beautiful Breast Cancer Awareness Jewelry called the Hope and Support Jewelry. For every piece sold, Cookie Lee will donate $1.00 to the American Cancer Society.

Most of us have been touched in some way by Breast Cancer. We’ve known someone who’s had it, been someone who’s had it, or at the very least known someone who’s been touched by this. So far Cookie Lee has raised over $165,000 for the American Cancer Association, let’s make it more!

The pieces this year are really beautiful, so show your support by purchasing a Breast Cancer Hope and Support bracelet set or pin.

If you can't really see the pieces that well here, feel free to drop me an email at glitteropheliaATa-mommys-worldDOTcom and I'll send you a MUCH better photo, I just don't have any way to attach it here. :(

ok, I found another survey site that looks good. It's here. they pay out through paypal. I'm not sure how much yet you have to collect to get paid though.

Additionally, have any of you (who want to make money from home) tried chacha.com yet? The pay starts kinda low but it can pick up and you can choose to get paid immediately as an option on a visa card they send you, or get paid once a month to your bank account. a girl i just talked to just made 275.00 on it, and all you do is answer questions. it's really speedy.....and you have to answer the questions in under 160 characters or something like that. i just signed up myself. you have to take a test to get in and get approved as a guide, but once you get approved, you're in.

as for the first survey site i posted awhile back, i'm halfway up to my payout just by clicking on those "paid emails" they send my way. I've hardly done any surveys at all, actually. if you click on the emails it does add up pretty fast.

if i discover anything else that looks good I'll post it.

I found out this morning that there will be  a Thanksgiving morning church service that I will have to play for in November. So no Run for Food 5K for me this year. :( The proceeds from this race provide a Thanksgiving dinner for my community's homeless.

I just had a music lesson, and no sooner was it over did Johnny Jihad come out of his room.

"Is that boy in band?"

"Um...yeah he is in a band."

And giggles like a little girl before treating me to a story about a girl he knew who dated a musician she saw playing in a jazz band in the CBD. Few months later she gets pregnant and because she was on a working visa she left.

Thanks for the cautionary tale, chief? WTF?

I thought I might tell my teacher for its quasi-random hilariousness, but that might create tension between us roffles.

Just after that I went out onto the balcony and caught the slob perving at me. The fuck! I was staring out into space, as I tend to do, and caught him. He immediately scrammed. So you should, asshole.

---

^That was typed up yesterday but not posted. (I backdated the entry to its original time.)

A short while later I was in the kitchen making something and Johnny Jihad comes out and has the fucking nerve, "He not so good. My mother play better than that."

Motherfuck you! Your mother can set the piano on fire, my teacher will wipe the floor with her using his left ring finger.

That's typical of him too. He complains about me eating pasta all the time, he started that mess with the dog shit, etc.

I told him he probably heard me playing because I didn't know what else to say. My teacher was dropping some Jelly Roll and Monk. For some reason I doubt the mother of a 30-something immigrant can compete.

Last week, when I told him how much I pay in rent (the same as him, though his room is twice the size and has the bangin' front balcony) he had the balls to knock on my door and say about him cooking for me, "You can't say no to me."

I gave him a real nasty look and said, "Yes I can."
