Mar. 11th, 2007 @ 11:22 pm Special edition of 80's HADES - Irish 80's bands
Yes, as unoriginal as it is, we are finally doing a vaguely Irish-themed St. Patrick's Day show on 80's HADES this coming Friday, March 16. Thus, I am desperate for music by Irish pop/rock/punk bands of the late 70's and 80's (roughly 1976-1989).

Clicky-clicky if you want to be a part of history... )

Aug. 7th, 2006 @ 10:48 pm The Lost Boys
One of my favourite 80’s movies was The Lost Boys, once I got into it. I was 13 when it came out, and my sister [info]queenstartiger took me to see it one afternoon that summer. I was all about Corey Feldman at the time, so anything he was in was a must-see. I know, I know. Yeesh. If I only knew then what I know now...

By the time the opening credits started to roll, I wanted to leave. I was scared! Not only had Corey Feldman not appeared on the screen yet, but the scary vampire David (who was that bad guy Ace Merrill in Stand By Me) had bitten right into a bald guy's head and blood squirted out! It was about all my thirteen-year-old psyche could take. I'd be having nightmares for weeks!

[info]queenstartiger had a better grip on reality, and was not going to waste the price of admission, especially since I had begged her to go to this movie. So we watched the whole thing. Looking at it now, I think Geez, what happened to these guys? Only Scary Vampire David (the gorgeous Keifer Sutherland) has a worthy career at this point. I didn't know how to back a winning horse back then, evidently.

And the soundtrack? Not so bad. Well, actually Roger Daltrey's cover of Elton John's Don't Let the Sun go Down on Me is laughable, but the INXS and Jimmy Barnes contributions are good, and Echo and the Bunnymen do a more than respectable cover of the Doors' People are Strange.

And where are you now, Gerard McMann? You and your ghostly-voiced children's choir really made this soundtrack for me with Cry Little Sister (Theme from the Lost Boys).

Apr. 3rd, 2006 @ 07:49 pm Examples of 80's in 80's song lyrics?
Hi there! I'm looking for any 80's song that mentions any year or set of years from the 80's in the lyrics. Anything counts -- eighties, 1984, '86, whatever. Any mention of a year from the 80's, in any (audible) form, is fair game. I'm making a new promo for our 80's radio show, and I want it to be a collage of "80's" (obvious, I know, but we really need a new promo -- the old one is getting pretty stale). Here's what I already have in GarageBand ready to be sampled and mixed:

"Eighties" - Killing Joke
"New Gold Dream (81-82-83-84)" - Simple Minds
"California Uber Alles" - Dead Kennedys
"Lost In The 80's" - Steel Breeze

I know Marillion has a line about "hitting the streets in '82" in "White Feather" (from Misplaced Childhood), but it's kind of hard to hear, so I'm not using that one. Also, there's the classic line of Asia's -- "And now you find yourself in '82, the disco hotspots hold no charm for you" -- but I am embarrassed to admit I don't own that song. I will probably snag it through iTunes.

Any others? I'd love to hear what you can come up with. I don't need mp3's of songs -- just titles and artists (although if do you post mp3's, I won't complain!). Some of them I will probably already have; others I can buy.

Thank you!

Robert Plant • Burning Down One Side

Pictures at Eleven, 1982

For his debut solo album, Robert Plant doesn't exactly succumb to everyone's expectations. With a less-potent vocal style, Plant manages to carry out most of the songs in smooth, stylish fashion while rocking out rather convincingly on a couple of others. He gets some pretty good help from guitarist Robbie Blunt, who truly comes to life on "Worse Than Detroit," and both Phil Collins and Cozy Powell give Plant enough of a solid background to lean his sultry yet surging rock voice against. Plant channels his energy quite effectively through songs like "Pledge Pin" and "Moonlight in Samosa," while the single "Burning Down One Side" is a creditable one, even though it failed to crack the Top 50 in both the U.K. and the U.S. The most apparent characteristic about the album's eight tracks is the fact that Plant is able to escape most of his past and still sound motivated. Without depending too much on his Led Zeppelin days, he courses a new direction without changing or disguising his distinct vocal style whatsoever. Pictures at Eleven peaked within the Top Five on both sides of the Atlantic, successfully launching Plant's solo career. - Mike De Gagne, AllMusic.com

This has to be one of the catchiest riffs in all of rock. It took me forever to find this song — try looking for Pictures at Eleven sometime. (Throw a stick and you'll hit twelve copies of Plant's 1987 Now & Zen.)

Jul. 3rd, 2005 @ 08:40 pm The song Jimmy Page didn't want you to hear
Current Mood: awake
Current Music: Signifying Rapper-Schoolly D
Signifying Rapper, off Schoolly D's 1988 album Smoke Some Kill, was once an integral part of Abel Ferrara's ballsy, big-Catholic-guilt 1992 film Bad Lieutenant. On the home video versions, the song has been replaced by either silence or a church organ. Why? Because the song samples Led Zeppelin's 'Kashmir' — well, it sounds like it recreates the riff moreso than samples it — and Jimmy Page didn't dig that. (LedZep usually charges exorbitant fees for the privilege of using their songs in a movie.) So it was removed. But now, thanks to the magic of file-sharing, you can put on your Bad Lieutenant DVD and experience the film the way it was meant to be seen — with 'Signifying Rapper' playing in the background as a nun is raped and as Harvey Keitel is wandering through a hospital to visit the nun.

NOTE: Lyrics may be offensive to, well, everyone. Schoolly D is today perhaps best known for his theme song for Aqua Teen Hunger Force.

Rolling Stone actually used to be worth reading.
Illustrations like this one by Charles Burns,
which ran alongside the Bad Lieutenant review,
were part of why.
