COyou2 - Saving the planet one breath at a time

This site looks interesting, it's talking about personal carbon capture and storage as a strategy to prevent climate change:
http://cou2.com

"The COyou2 patented technology works by filtering the air you breathe out, capturing the carbon in a convenient lightweight backpack.

As you breathe out into the tube, the carbon dioxide passes through a solution of ammonium nitrate and the reaction allows the carbon to be isolated. The carbon is then stored in exchangeable inner bags that can then be sequestered in any nearby location including your own backyard."

I've just ordered a catalogue, it's definitely worth checking out, after all, every little thing makes a difference. I never thought about human beings as being responsible for major carbon emissions, but I'm always looking for ways to lessen my carbon footprint.

What do you guys think?

Squatting Forum @ 123

Join Freegan.info for a forum on reappropriation of the conditions of
homelessness. The dispossessed are denied their rights to food and shelter
by a system that recycles suffering and servitude. It is time to take
advantage of the conditions of neglect by resettling abandoned buildings
to forge the consensual space of extra-political collectives.

The talk will be about squatting, and the formation of networked
collectives to engage in the nuts and bolds of every-day class struggle.
The spaces of every-day life need to be revolutionized for autonomy,
self-determination, and freedom ! ! !

"Five Reasons Not to Vote" (an Excerpt)

Aug. 6th, 2008 | 01:16 am
mood: cheerful cheerful
posted by: [info]00no_capitalism in [info]00_no_war_1love

The below article is a reprinted excerpt by Jim Davies.
==========================
Once again, as Election Day approached the mantra intensifies: never mind for whom, but vote! It's your birthright, etc etc. For those troubled by a vague feeling that they are being hornswaggled, I write to offer comfort.

1. A first reason for not voting carries no weight with me personally, for I happen to be one who likes thinking outside the box and making up my own mind; but I mention it because it's - well, popular: not-voting is the popular thing to do. Anyone who likes doing what the majority does and being one of the winners, should therefore avoid voting.

Here are the round numbers of non-voters, out of our 280 million population:

30% aren't allowed
20% don't register
20% don't bother
----
70% stay home

The remaining 30% take part in the circus and about half of those (16% of the whole, or about 1 in 6) vote for the victor, who then governs all 100% for the next 4 years; only in the fairyland of democratic theory can this be called "majority rule."

2. My second reason for not voting is that it's a waste of time because the outcome of the election is rigged anyway. By "rigged" I don't mean that the actual victor is chosen in advance or that the figures are fabricated or that the ballots are mishandled (though that did happen in 1960) but just that the Republicrat machinery is  so powerful that all rivals are effectively excluded; for certain in practice, the winner WILL be either Tweedle Dum or Tweedle Dee. Example: in St Louis, rivals Badnarik and Cobb attempted to enter the debate building to serve legal papers on the Debate Commission to protest their exclusion from the debates; but they were promptly arrested.

You never heard of Badnarik or Cobb? - that's precisely my point.

3. My third reason for not voting is that, relatively, it's dangerous--because the chance that one vote out of the 84 million cast will affect the outcome is much lower than the probability of being accidentally killed en route to the polling place.  We all take risks every day, of course; but if you hold life precious, make sure to spend all your moments doing something worth while.

4. My fourth reason for not voting is that voting is immoral because by participating in a thoroughly immoral system, the voter endorses it. A friend of mine used to wave at polling booths on Election Day the banner "THIS IS A DEN OF CRIMINALS" and although strictly speaking he was wrong because the criminals have defined "crime" as only an act of disobedience to one of their laws, his point was clear enough.

Is the system immoral?--certainly it is, and not only for Reason 5 below. It's immoral because of Reasons 1 and 2 above (it permits and promotes Minority Rule) and because it has over its two-century life produced appalling suffering and privation and discord and
premature death. Supporters like to say America's is the best system in the world, and they may be right--but only in the sense that all other political systems are even worse.

5. My fifth reason not to vote (and the one that, for me, towers above all others combined) is that voting directly and necessarily violates human rights.

"Human rights" are those rights inherent in human beings, and all derive directly from the fundamental right of self-ownership. A human being is a creature who has, by right, 100% control over his or her own life. Every human has this right, and all those logically derived from it; consequently (consequently; no, this is not an exception but it follows directly and expressly) every human being has the right not to be ruled in any slight degree by somebody else; or in other words, no human has any right to rule another.

Yet government, and the voting process by which it is perfumed and disguised, is in the exclusive business of ruling others. Therefore, it is in the business of violating this fundamental human right, and therefore voting for it violates human rights.

The very act of pulling a lever, or

writing an "X", or punching out a
chad, is an act of violence against

our fellow humans; it is an act

which says, for a common example,

"I know full well that I have no right

to steal my neighbor's money to pay

for my child's education, so I want

you, Ms Candidate, to go do it for me."

And somehow, in the mysterious shell-game of democratic political theory, a power that does not exist in reality is conjured up out of nothing whatever by the process of voting. Our right to govern others is zero; and in real-life math, a million times zero is still zero. Only in the magic math of political myth does a million times zero equal something greater than zero.

It is 100% fraudulent; your neighbor's 20-year old son has by right 100% control over his own life, yet by the strong magic of voting, he can be made to surrender that right to your will and be made to go kill Iraqis of whom he has never heard. Yes, I know the draft is suspended; I also know it can be restored if and when the political cabal thinks it "necessary" and I know the voter is writing it a blank check to do exactly that, by the very act of voting.

The absolute and basic right of self-ownership was elegantly written in to the Declaration of Independence: ". . . all men are created equal, and are endowed by their creator with certain unalienable rights; that among these are Life . . ." What a tragedy that when the authors, themselves politicians, continued by writing without apparent intentional irony or disapproval "To secure these rights, governments are instituted . . ." nobody noticed that they had just constructed a gigantic contradiction. If individual humans own their own lives 100% (and we certainly do, or else we are sub-human) then the very last way to protect us and our rights is to set up someone to "govern" us, thereby violating the very right he is supposed to protect!

New radical community for finding friends.

Jul. 29th, 2008 | 06:24 pm
posted by: [info]itsgrimupnorth in [info]00_no_war_1love

Hello, I apologize if this is a repetitive post in your f-lists, but please bear with me as I announce the following:

[info]add_a_radical (Livejournal Radical Networking Community) Is a newborn community in which its purpose is to link individuals together with common interests in the political spectrum--in particular the radical and revolutionary edges of the table. I created this community in the hopes of making new friends with similar views; as well as having the chance to meet different people who have varying experiences in life--I feel everyone should have a priority in their life that demands for them to speak their mind, and exercise freedom of expression and 'out of the box' thinking. I feel that most of the "Add_me" communities meant for meeting new writers on livejournal are somewhat lacking in these uniting interests, and thus, have felt obliged to create such a community as this one.

Hopefully this community will prove useful as a resource for activists and thinkers to meet new friends with common interests.

Thank you for taking the time to read your invitation to the LRNC!

RFR Show #3: Sister Hailstorm Interview, Songs and Police Car Destroyed after Great Dead Prez Show

Dear friends,

You can listen to the third broadcast of our radio show by clicking here or, if that podcast website doesn't work, click here.

The first 45 minutes take place at the Dead Prez show, on February 14th, 2008 where we interviewed many, many different activist groups tabling outside.  The last 20 minutes of the show you will hear an interview with Sister Hailstorm and then you will find out more information, with a first hand account about how the Police car was overturned (completely flipped upside down) and destroyed (but no one was very badly harmed), and how the non-violent activists were successful (even though the police clubbed them repeatedly and pepper-sprayed them) when they surrounded the police car and protested to have a wrongly arrested African-American immediately released directly following the Dead Prez show.  You will hear two uninterrupted songs by hip-hop radical musician Sister Hailstorm.

"True peace is not merely the absence of tension: it is the presence of justice."
-Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

"Cowardice asks the question, 'Is it safe?' Expediency asks the question, 'Is it politic?' Vanity asks the question, 'Is it popular?' But, conscience asks the question, 'Is it right?' And there comes a time when one must take a position that is neither safe, nor politic, nor popular, but one must take it because one's conscience tells one that it is right."

--  Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

"Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter."

First hand account from someone involved:
http://olyblog.net/first-hand-accounts-evergreen-last-night

Below is 'The Article' unedited, by Cassie Johnson who was there.

The Article
by Cassie Johnson

One glance at the red block-numbering of the alarm clock told me it was
indeed February 14th, 2008. It was Valentine's Day, and I was going to see
Dead Prez this impending eve. Amen.

My day started slow; a wake-up, and a couple special hours spent in
downtown Olympia with my significant other before a whirlwind of exterior
activity came to claim me. Then I received a call from each of my co-hosts
on the Radical Free School Radio Show. T called me to confirm that Sara
and I would meet him at or around 7:30 outside Evergreen's CRC Center.
Sara called inviting me to help her to make some patches for the Free
School on the Evergreen campus before the show that evening. I dug up some
bus money from my immediate surroundings and began the 45-minute bus
journey from the Intercity Transit Center to the Evergreen State College,
and joined her in a room proximal to the library. That room was the
headquarters of an intensely politically and socially active group of
students who I had the experience of spending the next few hours in the
company of.

The room was covered, ceiling-to-floorboard, with posters and artworks,
nearly all of them requesting and advocating tangible change in current
unjust conditions (social, political, historical human rights
infringements, the effects of which are experienced daily on some large
scale), and also many images and words celebrating those who stepped up to
create tangible change in their world. In the center of the room,
surrounded by large silkscreen patterns, minute stencil cutting materials,
and small, sticky vats of ink was Sara Flaherty. Hello, Sara Flaherty:
teach me how to silkscreen print! Teach me the hallowed dichotomy of
stenciled artistry!

We passed the hours before the show performing the patch-making task at
hand, discussing and debating a wide range of subjects with others around
us, and one another (everything from the amount of ink one should spread
on a silkscreen, to the importance of Beethoven's deafness within his
creativity, to the effects of racial humor upon global society), and, of
course, preparatorily bumping some Dead Prez beats.

The sun had gone, the night had come: the patches were mostly complete.
There was a mad dash to return out borrowed materials and to get to the
CRC Center to set up the Free School's table inside the venue.

"Radicalism is love in action," was one of the first of many definitive
quotes I remember T uttering, when the Radical Free School Radio Show was
still in its fetal era. Olympia's finest examples were on display. Upon
walking into the CRC Center's first gymnasium chamber, I saw this sentence
take real form all around me. To my left were the Media Island and Co-Op
tables, and to my right, Camp Quixote's. Across the way, I remember
spotting the Birth Attendants and Planned Parenthood. However, there were
many, many more incredible causes in the concert's anteroom. I could feel
a strong awareness of the pursuit of a better world; not only as speaking
of all of our mere presences at the show, but moreso our individual and
solidaritous presences in the world. This feeling of unity and converged
purpose continued throughout the show, spreading into various arenas, and
burning down those human constructs of limitation that work only to
disunify, oppress, and despotize the holy naturalisms of freedom, spirit,
and common good.

The opening acts embodied this powerful force of unified life forms and
"love in action." Sister Hailstorm, DJ B-Girl, and A.P. worked in a
continuous stream, performing together, giving shout-outs and
encouragements to one another; shooting down and powerfully coming against
hate oppression, injustice, and conditioned forced helplessness--in United
States society and beyond! It was an empowered and informed atmosphere,
with no lack of dancing bodies anywhere one looked.

Dead Prez experienced some delays in reaching the venue, but in hindsight,
this suspense and momentary lull only made it more exciting as the group
took stage around 11:30 pm. This in-between time also made it possible to
get some interviews with all the awesome organizations represented at the
tables around us, and to just talk to people; to build contacts and
relationships; to express and establish solidarity, and to shake some
courteous hands.

And how was the Dead Prez experience? Spectacular! I don't know that any
amount of words could express the joy, individual or collective, of
spending Valentine's evening with these fellows. If a reader is wondering
"Did they do that [insert any given major title] one song that I really
love?", the answer is mostly likely yes (the setlist was virtually
impeccable). As always, the group was all about individual empowerment,
self-education, social equality, shared love, and the hope of a truly
healthy society in the present and future; as well as the dissembling of
any subversive causes that act to cripple these beautiful virtues.

At one point, about half-way into the set, it as announced from the stage
that someone in the audience had been arrested. The audience expressed
extreme disapproval and distaste at this prospect. It was consensus that
the concert's energy was a positive, free, and triumphal one. Dead Prez
encouraged the audience to organize and focus their discontent in smart
and effective ways, suggesting the method of taking down the badge numbers
of any police presence, and taking words of protest to the station the
next day. The common feeling was that a sacred space had been encroached
upon by correctional forces. No one was sure what the man was being
arrested for, but rumors flew around that it was either for slightly rough
behavior or for minor recreational drug use: two things both incredibly
common at concert events, and able to be sufficiently "dealt with" by the
dedicated students employed as Evergreen security. It was also known to
some that the man was African-American. Anyone present at the event could
report that, although the crowd represented a diverse racial make-up, a
cursory glance over the show's population would tell the average eye that
the majority of the attendees at least appeared to be of a majority
Caucasian decent.

All of this enragingly paired with the suspicion any citizen should feel
upon hearing the law has executed some action that's motives remain
unclear to the surrounding public merely fired a pre-existent righteous
collective anger toward harsh, unfair decisions made by the few in power,
who take away from the many they are truly supposed to serve.

My words to those who have chosen to attach a post-event negative or
threatening spin to the evening's events are:

There is no replacing the vital importance of context. Yes, that even
discounts the mock-objectivity of negative voices who had no part in the
evening's experiences. Pre-biased establishmentarians and non-present
sensationalists cannot readily be heeded as unarguably valid sources by
any means.
The crowd was a large cross-section of politically informed residents of
Olympia and surrounding areas.
All thought and feeling detectable within the environment was of lofty,
beautiful intent and message.

Upon packing up our tabling materials, T and I arranged rides to our homes
with our good friend Fabiola from the Co-Op. All of us walked out of the
CRC Center to find that the people had indeed organized, and quite
immediately. Of course, they'd also chosen their own method, and it came
in the form of a synchronized verbal protest. A strong chorus of "Let him
go!" wafted up from the circular base of the CRC courtyard, accompanied by
many raised fists and ringed around the singular police vehicle. On the
way to our own vehicle, Fabiola predicted that the gathering would turn
into a riot. T then spoke another quote, perfect for the occasion. "The
definition of a riot is the police harassing citizens. Always remember
that." On my ride downtown, I noticed police cars turning out of various
side streets and plunging up Fourth Avenue toward the college.

There was electricity in the air.

Afghanistan: death sentence for downloading report on oppression of women

Authorities in Afghanistan have sentenced a 23-year-old journalism student to death for having downloaded and shared copies of a report criticizing the oppressive treatment of women in some Islamic societies. Snip from Wired News Threat Level blog:
Sayed Pervez Kambaksh (at right), who is a journalism student at Balkh University and a writer for Jahan-e Naw, was sentenced last October after downloading a report from a Farsi website that criticized Islamic fundamentalists who misrepresent statements in the Koran to justify the oppression of women. Kambaksh was arrested after someone filed a complaint against him. He is accused of blasphemy for distributing the report to other students and teachers at his school.

He was tried by a sharia court (which overseas Islamic religious law) and was not allowed legal representation, according to news reports. The Afghan Senate passed a motion this week supporting the sentence, according to the British newspaper The Independent.

Interview: Evergreen Professor and Founder of www.Olyblog.net encourages usage of racial slurs and promotes racial attacks.

Written By T.  Podcast Interview Conducted by T interviewing Ian, one of several former students of Rick McKinnon who have spoken out about Rick McKinnon's useage of slurs regarding African-Americans, people of color, women and the LGBTQ community.

Have a complaint about Rick McKinnon? Call 24 hours and leave a detailed message here: Report bias at: 206-339-9418
Rick McKinnon's Photo and website are here: http://rickmckinnon.com/resume

Rick McKinnon, Ph.D., the Founder and maintainer for a community Blog in Olympia has used his teaching position to encourage students to use racial slurs.  He has used these racial slurs and encouraged students to use them under the guise that using them "reclaims" such words.  He has used these racial slurs and derogatory remarks against people of color, the LGBTQ community and marginalized people such as n----r, f-g, and b----.

In this interview, one of his former students, Ian, bravely speaks out against this hate speech, and also explains how a woman who he knows closely also spoke out against the usage of such racial slurs in his class.

This is a very serious issue, because:
#1. This Professor is influencing students who once did not engage in hate speech, to do so afterwards
#2. This Professor has repeatedly made many of the best activists to feel uncomfortable due to his hate speech and he teaches at Evergreen State College which is a State Institution sponsored by the government, which is tax payers money.  So it is your tax dollars that are enabling him to teach, promote and encourage hate speech to students who come from around the world.
#3. Many Neo-Nazi parties and Klansmen have also usage such hate speech in teaching positions to influence students into thinking that such usage of racial slurs is acceptable.

This is also a very serious issue because Rick McKinnon, as the founder and moderator of www.olyblog.net, a community media blog, in Olympia, Washington, has promoted racial attacks against people of color.:

Below is a Quote from a booklet titled: "Why We Need Multilingual Media That Supports People of Color And Marginalized People"" which describes the attack:

"All of these attacks were promoted, encouraged and reignited only after Ronnie [the booklet changes the author's name], the founder and maintainer of the English-only community blog [www.olyblog.net] then posted the below Thread at the top of the community blog (placed in a manner so that it would remain at the top of the page the entire day):"

You can read the entire booklet titled: "Why We Need Multilingual Media That Supports People of Color And Marginalized People" at http://www.LoveandDiversity.org

It should also be made known that Neo-Nazis in Olympia are making an increasing prsence in Olympia, which can be seen in the below news article published in Z Magazine.

The article was titled, “Olympia Community Stand Up to Nazis” and can be found at the below link.

http://www.zmag.org/content/showarticle.cfm?ItemID=9589

This article was written by Peter Bohmer who teaches the wonderful program known as "Alternatives to Capitalist Globalization."
More information about this course is found here: http://academic.evergreen.edu/b/bohmerp/sylaltneolib.htm

Between August 2005 and August 2006 I had the pleasure of receiving an email from Peter Bohmer inviting me to give a presentation in front of one of his classes describing the Annual A World Beyond Capitalism conference.

At one point in Peter Bohmer's article about the Nazi's in Olympia the article he states: "In Germany, pro Nazi groups are not allowed, given their history there. Given the history of slavery and genocidal attacks on Native Americans and continued racism here in the U.S., I question whether openly white supremacist hate groups should be permitted here."

Indeed, given the history of slavery and genocidal attacks on Native Americans and continued racism here in the U.S. which has taught racism to students in US government institutions for hundreds of years, one must also question why Professors in governement institutions who openly use racial slurs in their classrooms should be permitted to continue teaching in Evergreen State College, a government institution.

It should be noted while reading the article that the Neo-Nazis group decided to choose a Media Organization in Olympia to choose as their gathering place.

The community Blog which Rick McKinnon created has become a media gathering place which promotes, encourages and reignites racial attacks against people of color and marginalized people… in the same way that Rick McKinnon, Ph.D., the Founder and maintainer for Olyblog.net has done in many of the classes which he has taught.

Northwestern Professor Denies Holocaust

By Jennifer Korducki
Wednesday, February 8, 2006

Last night, students, faculty and other members of the community met in the McCormick Tribune Center to discuss the background of Holocaust denial. The meeting was in response to Northwestern professor Arthur Butz's public endorsement of the Iranian president in claiming the Holocaust never happened. Students who attended the forum had plenty to say on the recent issue.

"It's different if I go out and write a book saying whatever I want; no one knows who Steve Silver is, says Steve Silver, a Medill sophomore. "But, Northwestern professor, no matter what the name is after that, that's all people will remember. Northwestern professor said this, and that looks horrible for the university."

"Professor Butz has every right to say what he wants to say, that's the liberty he has on the freedom of speech," says Stuart Loren, a Weinberg sophomore. "However, he works at a private institution at Northwestern, and I think Northwestern has the right to establish a certain set of what is acceptable behavior for their faculty."

Butz is a tenured professor whose views have been known for years. He published a book in 1976 and has posted his beliefs about the Holocaust on his Web site since 1996. He claims the Holocaust is a lie that was developed from the desire to create a Jewish state in the Middle East. In response to his claims, many people are challenging the university to take action.

"I think that would be something extremely positive and a positive message, says Rabbi Dov Hillel Klein, director of the Tannenbaum Chabad House. "On one hand, maybe we can't ask Arthur Butz to leave but we can definitely drown out his voice by having a positive program, positive voice saying yes, indeed the Holocaust did take place and these are the lessons that we can learn eternally from the Holocaust."

Title: "Harvard President Under Fire for Sexist Remarks" found here http://feminist.org/news/newsbyte/uswirestory.asp?id=8842

Harvard President Lawrence Summers is under heavy criticism for suggesting at an academic conference that women have less innate ability to perform in science and mathematics than men. He also downplayed the role discrimination and social factors play in explaining the dearth of female professors in science and engineering at major universities, according to the Boston Globe. Its so upsetting that all these brilliant young women [at Harvard] are being led by a man who views them this way, said Nancy Hopkins, a biologist at MIT and a conference attendee who walked out of Summers talk, according to the Globe. Summers has defended his comments, saying that he was merely suggesting that the role of discrimination and innate abilities of women and men in the sciences need further research, according to the Associated Press."

==============================
Rick McKinnon, Evergreen College College Professor would have you believe that he was merely suggesting that the use of racial slurs, derogatory slurs against women and slurs about the LGBTQ community are permissable in a classromm... and full justifiable when he decides to use them in his classroom.

Harvard President Lawrence Summers was later forced to resign and the first woman president of Harvard was elected, a monumental achievement especially in light of the fact that at one time Harvard was an all male University with no people of color as students or Professors.

Article Title: "Racist Professor in Texas shows his true self
Law instructor should resign, lawmakers say."  Article found here: http://www.azteca.net/aztec/texas.html

Chicano lawmakers Thursday called for the resignation of University of Texas law professor Lino Graglia, who said earlier this week that racial diversity adds little to students' education and that blacks and Mexican-Americans come from cultures in which ``failure is not looked upon with disgrace.''
``He should not continue to represent the state of Texas or educate the future leaders of our state in one of our premier public institutions,'' state Rep. Hugo Berlanga, chairman of the House Mexican-American Legislative Caucus, said in a written statement. ``The fact that he and his opinions represent our tax dollars at work in a state as diverse as Texas is intolerable.''
Graglia's comments drew quick criticism from lawmakers, Chicanos, lawyers, Graglia's peers and University of Texas alumni statewide. State Sen. Carlos Truan, D-Corpus Christi, said he is asking minority caucuses in the Senate to urge that the professor resign.
The League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC) Council No. 1 in Corpus Christi unanimously approved a resolution Thursday night demanding Graglia's resignation, and if he does not that the university use all available means to punish him.
``Graglia believes that minority students come from a culture of failure,'' the resolution said. ``He knows nothing of our culture and has never crawled down from his ivory tower to find out.
``His lack of respect for the students who sit in his classes is unacceptable. His contempt for our leaders is intolerable.''
About 50 of the law school's 60 professors issued a statement Thursday saying they disagree with Graglia's views, university officials said.
Graglia spoke Wednesday during the announcement of a new student organization that supports a federal court ruling outlawing race-based admissions policies in Texas. Graglia is a faculty adviser for the student group.
``Blacks and Mexican-Americans are not academically competitive with whites in selective institutions,'' he said. ``It is the result primarily of cultural effects. It seems to be the case that, various studies seem to show, that blacks and Mexican-Americans spend much less time in school. They have a culture that seems not to encourage achievement. Failure is not looked upon with disgrace.''
Graglia, who could not be reached for comment Thursday, has said it is unfortunate that a person can't object to affirmative action and racial preferences without being labeled racist. He also said he believes studies support his contention that minorities generally aren't competitive with whites, adding that the problem should be addressed at the elementary and secondary levels, not at colleges and universities.

Title: "FBI Probes New Orleans-Area Noose Case" found here: http://www.guardian.co.uk/worldlatest/story/0,,-7059696,00.html

Thursday November 8, 2007 3:16 AM [International Time which is different from local time]

By CAIN BURDEAU

Associated Press Writer

NEW ORLEANS (AP) - The FBI is investigating allegations that a public works department supervisor displayed in his office two nooses, a bullwhip and a dart board with a black man as the bull's-eye, an agent said Wednesday.

A black worker went public with the complaints Wednesday, saying he was fed up with the racist symbols in his white superintendent's office at a sewage lift station in Jefferson Parish.

``I've been in this department 6 years, and when I got to the department they were there,'' Terrence Lee said.

Lee's superiors dismissed his concerns when he went to them, he said at a news conference in the offices of Danatus King, president of the New Orleans chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People.

``I know I'm going to get fired, but I have to stand up,'' Lee said.

Lee identified the superintendent as Bill Hartline. Tim Whitmer, a top parish administrator, said Hartline is a longtime employee.

No home phone listing for a Bill or William Hartline could be found.

King called on Jefferson Parish to remove all racist symbols from its property and fire any worker responsible for exhibiting racist symbols.

Officials in Jefferson Parish, a bedroom community of New Orleans, said in a news release that ``appropriate action'' would be taken. Whitmer said parish leaders learned of Lee's allegations only on Wednesday afternoon.

FBI agent Jim Bernazzani said he assigned the case to his civil rights division.

``We take these complaints very seriously,'' Bernazzani said. ``We're seeing if it rises to the level of a federal hate crime.''

The investigation will be based in part on photographs Lee took in 2005 of his superintendent's office. In them, the nooses dangle from a wooden contraption that reaches to the ceiling. A bullwhip hangs from a wooden post labeled as a whipping post. A black man stands at the center of the dart board, and his groin area makes up the bull's-eye.

Racial tension in Louisiana has been high after the case known as the Jena Six, in which six black teens were accused of beating a white student at a high school in the town of Jena. A noose was hung in a tree on campus not long before the attack.

In September, tens of thousands of people marched on the small central Louisiana town in one of the largest civil rights demonstrations in years.
