help, please
I hope everyone had a meaningful fast this past week, or a meaningful holiday. I have a question.

I went to Chabad's Yom Kippur services this year, and right before Torah reading there was this passage:

"I am the servant of the Holy One, blessed be He, before whom and before whose glorious Torah I prostrate myself at all times: not in man do I put my trust, nor upon any angel do I rely, but upon the God of heaven, who is the God of truth, and whose Torah is truth, and whose prophets are prophets of truth, and who aboundeth in deeds of goodness and truth. In Him do I put my trust, and unto His holy and glorious name do I utter praises."

Where is this from? Can I find it in Hebrew?

Thanks!

Lamed Vov?
I've never heard of the "Lamed Vov" before today while running into this article: http://www.uucss.org/sermons/uu2006-09-24.html while cruising the internet.

Can anyone give me more information about this idea/folklore?

Kol Nidre

My rabbi friend is giving a talk at Kol Nidre about drug/alcohol abuse and asked for my thoughts. I gave him a few. I don't know how much he will incorporate but here is what I wrote to him.

Nowadays alcohol abuse is considered "substance abuse" but they are not the same problem. In the traditional community (Conservative to Orthodox) the alcohol problem is considerably smaller percentage-wise than in the general population. Clearly something is working regarding alcohol, but that success with alcoholism has not translated into success with drug abuse. And because we assume the problem is solved with alcohol, we have not noticed our growing drug problem.

Paris in January
I'm traveling home for the birth of my niece after Sukkot, and my return flight has a week stopover in Paris (I found some crazy extraordinary deal)... So I'm thinking about doing a bit of sightseeing around Paris, and since I was there about 12 years ago, I want to venture out of the city.

Question... when a Jew is in Paris/ around Paris, what are they to do, where can they stay, and well, I need a week's worth of suggestions and hookups.

Thanks in advance, happy new year and gmar chatimah tova to all!!!

After Haftarah Blessing on Yom Kippur
Does anyone know where I could get an audio copy of this before Yom Kippur? I'm apparently reading Haftarah at mincha, and while I can probably muddle my way through the after haftarah blessing, I'd rather have some idea where to fit the words into the melody.

Thanks.

Simchat Torah
Hello everyone,

My Hillel was thinking about doing a Simchat Torah celebration on campus. I am kind of confused about what exactly that would entail since we don't have a Torah scroll, a rabbi, very much knowledge of songs, etc. Do you have any ideas for a "home" celebration of Simchat Torah? Or maybe it is just better suited for a synagogue setting. Thanks!

designing a tallit
Shalom all -

I just got started in making my own tallit - it'll be a big one! : )

I'm just wondering if anyone here made their own and if it turned out like they expected and what their experience was making it. And also why did you make it yourself?

I'm working on my bat mitzvah (I converted so I'm in the adult b'nai mitzvah class) and I wanted a new tallit and none of the tallitot I saw interested me, so I decided to make my own.

Jewish Army trainee in Ga. was beaten by anti-semites on base
http://www.breitbart.com/article.php?id=D93J7BJ00&show_article=1&catnum=-1

SAVANNAH, Ga. (AP) - In a letter home, a Jewish soldier in basic training at Fort Benning complained of religious discrimination and wrote that a friend overheard platoon members saying they wanted to beat him up.

Days later, Pvt. Michael Handman was beaten so badly he had to be treated at a hospital, and his father believes the attack stemmed from an investigation of Handman's claims that instructors had harassed him and used anti-Semitic slurs.

"I have just never been so discriminated against/humiliated about my religion," Handman wrote to his parents. "I just feel like I'm always looking over my shoulder. Like my battle buddy heard some of the guys in my platoon talking about how they wanted to beat the (expletive) out of me tonight while I'm sleeping."

The letter alarmed Handman's father so much he contacted U.S. Sen. Saxby Chambliss, R-Ga., who asked the Army to investigate.

Handman, 20, of Atlanta wrote to his parents that he was heading to take a shower on Sept. 24, four days after investigators interviewed him about the harassment, when another soldier called him into the laundry room, saying some of Handman's clothes were in a pile on the floor. Handman said he was sorting through the pile on his knees when a fist knocked him on his back.

"He kept hitting the side of my face, back of my head and temples for about 10-15 more seconds that I can remember," Handman wrote. "After that I was knocked out. Next thing I remember is tasting blood and 2 pvts. (privates) standing over me calling my name."

He was treated for a concussion and bruising to the left side of his face at the Army hospital on post and moved to a different platoon after he returned to training the next day, said Fort Benning spokeswoman Monica Manganaro.

Manganaro said two drill sergeants are being reprimanded for religious discrimination toward Handman after he started basic training Aug. 29.

She said one drill sergeant had called Handman "Juden"—the German word for Jews. Another demanded he remove his yarmulke, which Handman wore with his uniform, while eating in a dining hall.

Investigators have interviewed a fellow trainee suspected of attacking Handman, but no charges have been filed. Mangaro said investigators believe the attack "was not due to religious prejudice" but would not explain why.

In a Sept. 26 letter to Chambliss, Army Deputy Chief of Staff Samuel Rollinson said investigators found two drill sergeants had violated Army regulations prohibiting religious discrimination.

"While the actions of the NCOs (noncommissioned officers) were not meant to be malicious, and were done out of ignorance for regulations and cultural awareness, this does not excuse their conduct," Rollinson said in his letter.

Handman's father, Jonathan Handman, said his son decided to join the Army when he found himself lost and seeking direction after two years in college. Now Jonathan Handman said his son is afraid of being attacked again and he regrets encouraging him to enlist.

"When my son told me he wanted to join the Army, I supported him 100 percent," he said. "Now I feel like the one that fed him to the wolves."
