Men's Hockey Writer For those who may not know - Tom Reale is being deployed this summer for probably a year or so. Aside from the various real life implications (and for as sarcastic as I can be they do still matter), I have a very practical matter to deal with: Tom's not going to be able to write the weekly updates for RPI PBA(aF). If you are potentially interested in filling in for him next season, please e-mail me directly. | | Thursday, February 7th, 2008 | 9:37 pm [pianorayk]

Chocolate Thunder Hey guys . . . This Saturday, RPI is having it's annual Black Family Technology Awareness Day. What makes it important is that one of the groups that will be entertaining people will be Chocolate Thunder – the same group in which I teach! They'll be performing in the DCC sometime around/after noon (the time I heard mentioned was something like 12:20, but I'm not sure)! I just got back from rehearsal. I told the kids that I was going to tell as many people I knew (including the entire Pep Band) that they were playing, and that they should all go to see them perform! So come on out and show my kids some support! (x-posted to my LJ) | | Tuesday, January 15th, 2008 | 1:04 pm [deathmatewd]

Ahoy! Sarah and I would like to announce the creation of a new Pep Band resource, the APBWiki! We decided that there's just way too much information floating around in random people's heads that needs to be collected somewhere, and that somewhere should be a collective effort, like a wiki. The wiki is running MediaWiki, the same software that powers Wikipedia, and is really easy to use. So, now that I've got you all excited, go to http://apbwiki.jlauser.net and check it out. If you want to edit the wiki, you're going to have to sign up. Anonymous edits are disabled, and so is user registration. Yes, this is annoying, but it also prevents the wiki from getting spammed, and it prevents people from vandalizing it. To sign up, please go to http://apbwiki.jlauser.net/accountrequest.html and fill out the form. One of us will create your account as soon as we can, and your password will be mailed to you. Thanks in advance for all of your help, and happy wiki-ing. Current Mood: excited | | Tuesday, November 28th, 2006 | 10:01 am [deathmatewd]

Saw this come across and thought some of you would be interested (*cough* tenner*cough*) Hello, This will be the last email I send for awhile, sorry for the recent influx. In our continuing effort to update our music sets, we will be redoing the music cheer sheets. We will be meeting in West 326 on Monday, December 11th at 12 PM to discuss songs we want to keep, remove, and add, and who will be doing what. Note that this is after classes are done, and it still gives you a completely unobstructed study day before exams start. We’ll also spend a short amount of time putting the music we took out in May back in the library. So basically, if you want to arrange a cheer for our new version of the cheer sheet or have a say in the fates of the current musical cheers, you’ll want to be at this meeting. Bring any ideas you have, as we are interested in hearing them. Enjoy the rest of your week. | | Monday, November 27th, 2006 | 12:03 pm [deathmatewd]

Field report: ND @ MSU I had the opportunity to take in the game tonight between #5 Notre Dame and #4 MSU, so I thought I'd file a field report from your friendly neighborhood CCHA correspondent.
The hockey: Great game between two teams who definitely are top five in the country. The difference in quality of play is noticeable, but not quite as pronounced as my last look at the CCHA in 1995. Certainly with these two teams, the "new NHL" commodities of puck possession and speed were absolutely central for both of these clubs. Officiating here in the CCHA is just as bad as in the ECACHL. Notre Dame are a bunch of dirty divers, and they were getting the refs to call MSU by flopping all night long. What's worse is the beautiful 3rd MSU goal got wiped out on a very questionable offside call. The Lerg boys - Jeff (G) and Bryan (F) are for real. They may not be stars in the NHL, but they'll be good skilled players in the league for a long time.
The rink: Munn Ice Arena was built in 1974, and holds its age pretty well. It's a more conventional size and shape than Houston Field house, seating a few more at 6,470. They added luxury boxes and an elevated press area about 6 years ago. Each section has about 18 rows of seats, at a lower pitch than the treacherous HFH steps. If you think of the love child of Glens Falls Civic Center and Sovereign Bank Arena in Trenton, you've pretty much got it. The atmosphere is much more subdued as compared to HFH. With a lower roof, the sound travels well, and while the students were there and cheering, the spirit as compared to RPI or our big rival schools like Clarkson just wasn't there.
The band: The band sits in the corner section and was about 30 strong. I took note of a number of aspects of the band - good bad and ugly - that we could learn from. The good Musically, this small band would eat RPI Pep Band's lunch. I suppose this happens with a school this large, but one thing that I thought was important was the balance. The numbers broke down roughly this way: 8 trumpets 6 trombones 2 tenor saxes 5 mellophones 4 baritones 3 sousaphones drum set electric bass
The one thing I noticed about their sound was the strong low registers, which wasn't just because of the bass. The baritones really made a huge difference... I'm wondering if we shouldn't think about how to recruit more bari players (and find good NEW instruments for them) to round out the sound. And call me a heathen, call me a heretic, but with the challenges in being heard in HFH, perhaps the idea of an electric bass could at least be a topic for discussion. I was torn on the drum set. I think it helped to integrate the cymbals more tightly into the music, which in turn really helped to project the sound of the rhythm section.
They share time with the PA as well... but the musical selections are much better. Come On Eileen stood out (we should arrange that for Pep Band, by the way), as did the playing of All By Myself and Big Girls Don't Cry for opposing team penalties. The WTF moment of the night was when the PA played Piano Man, until I glanced at the clock and realized they played it at precisely 9:00 on a Saturday. Nice.
The band, at the break nearest to 10:00 of the second, plays Livin' on a Prayer and sings the chorus a capella. (Sing the chorus to yourself, you'll get the joke.)
Three pieces of music stood out for me: A Queen medley that started with the opening of Fat Bottom Girls and then broke into the meaty part of Bohemian Rhapsody. It really needed one more song to be a good medley; I'll have to do some thinking. Jungle Boogie was great - we own that and should pull it back out, it's been mothballed since the 80s. And they had a great cousin of our BU cheer that I loved - I listened closely and jotted it down on staff paper when I got home. I'll try to work it up - we can label it MSU, and replace "Let's Go State" with "Let's Go Red."
The bad They play their fight song INCESSANTLY. The game was televised tonight, and I swear they played it at just about every TV timeout. I hope this was just a special situation because of TV, but I don't get the impression it was.
And finally, their flag runners suck compared to ours. :)
The ugly On the waved-off third goal, the three sousaphones ran behind the flag runner, playing as they went. Holy Doppler effect, Batman! Not pleasant.
And the just plain weird... my seat was about 8 rows in front of the press box. They had an old-school phone that rang about 5 times per period. I felt right at home.

MEN'S & WOMEN'S HOCKEY TEAMS TO CONDUCT FOOD DRIVE FOR UNITY HOUSE Donations to be accepted at games on November 17, 24 & 25
TROY, N.Y. - The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men's and women's hockey teams are spearheading a food drive to benefit Unity House of Troy, Inc. The Engineers will collect non-perishable food items at the men's hockey game this Friday against Sacred Heart as well as at the men's holiday tournament on November 24-25.
All fans that make a donation will be entered into a special raffle during that evening's game. Prizes include signed hockey jerseys, tickets to RPI games as well as tickets to the ECAC Hockey League Championship in March. Other prizes may also be available.
Both teams will then deliver all of the collected food to Unity House on Sunday, November 26, to assist the organization in replenishing its shelves for the remainder of the holiday season.
"Thank you to the RPI hockey teams for this wonderful community outreach," said Chris Burke, CEO of Unity House. "We are so grateful that the people who rely on Unity House for help with food will benefit by this well-timed food drive. In the winter months when need is highest, donations of oatmeal, peanut butter, canned goods, baby formula, and diapers are especially helpful."
"Unity House provides a tremendous service and we are happy to assist in anyway we can," said Seth Appert, head coach of the men's team. "It is our hope that the Rensselaer community, as well as our fans from throughout the Capital Region, join us in supporting this effort to provide for those in need."
Rensselaer's game on Friday against Sacred Heart begins at 7pm. All non-perishable food items will be collected at the entrances and those with donations will receive a raffle ticket. The raffle prize winners will be announced during the third period of the game.
On November 24-25, the men's team hosts the 56th Annual Rensselaer/Bank of America Holiday Tournament and donations will be accepted throughout the weekend. The four-team tournament begins with Colgate University playing The Ohio State University at 4pm and RPI taking on Niagara at 7pm. The consolation and championship games follow the next night at 4pm and 7pm, respectively. | | Friday, October 13th, 2006 | 3:26 pm [tgramuh]

IMPORTANT REHEARSAL UPDATE Hi everyone,
Due to serious oversights on the organizers of tomorrow’s scheduled ROTC football game, the game has been moved to the far reaches of campus and we will consequently NOT BE PLAYING OUTSIDE at 10am tomorrow. Plan on A NORMAL REHEARSAL at 10am at West Hall, then we’ll load the van for hockey immediately afterwards.
Those of you who are planning to attend, we look forward to seeing you - rehearsal should be fun and the game's nearly sold out and should be a blast!
Sorry for the extremely short notice; I've been waiting for a final outcome from the ROTC people that only just arrived a few minutes ago.

Job Opening Will post job description later, but my old boss is looking for someone with an IT background to fill an entry-level project management job.Would prefer relocation to CT but not mandatory, Doesn't sound like PM experience is required.
My old boss said to me "yeah, Jim or Yuri or yourself would have been good candidates." He wants someone from RPI.
No idea on the money, but it's a new department for the company with a LOT of room to grow. TDC likes to grow from within and there's a lot of opportunity right now.
I'll pass along more experienced resumes as well. If you want to join TDC or MLB this is a chance. | | Tuesday, September 19th, 2006 | 9:53 pm [deathmatewd]
