I think I will send him "Thoughts on Gravity": Hi there. Urban Freeflow (www.urbanfreeflow.com) is currently producing two independent films to be released on DVD in the next 12 months. Promoting the art of freestyle parkour, these two films are seeking a soundtrack that is as inspirational as the visuals it is currently attempting. Parkour is an rapidly emerging extreme sport, as seen in Channel 4's 'Jump London' and 'Jump Britain' documentaries. It is the art of moving fluidly and efficiently through your environment, using a combination of jumps and vaults. The added freestyle element allows expression and embellishment to be added to those movements. Urban Freeflow is the largest parkour website with a global following, receiving 200,000 hits per day. We are currently producing a tutorial DVD for newcomers to the sport, and a documentary tracking the dramatic growth of parkour over the last 2 years. We are searching for original compositions from a wide and diverse range of genres. As an independent film, our budget is inevitably limited. Whilst we cannot afford to pay, this would be an opportunity to have your music promoted and fully credited, as well as being heavily associated with an emerging extreme sport that is currently at the cutting edge of popular culture. Any compositions must be 100% original and the artist/label must have full ownership of both performance and publishing rights. For anyone who, like me thinks UK ID cards are a terrible and evil idea on almost every level, can I point you to this: http://www.pledgebank.com/refuse £10 will be a small price compared the the god-knows-what you'd be having to pay for a compulsory ID card. Still, it was ace (and I wish we didn't have to come back to real life mode) - Bearsuit's new stuff is astounding (and they managed to be quite rock and roll sometimes, when they weren't going to bed early, ahem hem), the Retro Spankees completely confounded their apalling moniker by being AWESOME, I'm building a courtyard for my tabernacle and then going off to score some skaggis. Expectations are a funny thing: for some reason I was priming myself for something home-made, ramshackle and quirky, but in fact the album is a full-blown, much more ambitious selection of torch songs, and yes its string and flute arrangements often recall some of Cinerama's. At its barest and most pared down, this suite of songs resembles Harvey Williams' gentle "Rebellion" set, or the harmony obsessions of Allen Clapp - but more usually it inhabits recognisably Pulpesque territory (although the singer's cocksure Cockerisms may be an acquired taste), with the odd hint of Lovejoy or Beaumont at their most lounge-lizardly thrown in for good measure. And "What Are We Good For" even seems to owe a hint of hommage to the Scissor Sisters - the band aren't shy of slipping in electro-disco where the mood takes. Considering the shoestring budget I assume this was assembled on - much of it was recorded at home, by all accounts - "Melancholy Death" is gently orchestral, innately knowing, and surprisingly grand. Last July I decided I needed a guitar amp specifically for recording, rather than dragging my practice amp backwards and forwards between home and our practise space. Mainly, it had to be small, i.e. quiet, as recording at home, volume is more of a disadvantage than an advantage. After looking around on the net, I decided on a Fender Pro Junior, not least because of Nels Cline's love for them. Perfect - small (10 watts,) no reverb (again, not particularly useful for recording,) valves, reasonably priced (250 quid). Looking around on Ebay they seemed to be selling second had for close to the price of a new amp so I decided I may as well buy one new -- less hassle I figured. I placed an order with gak.co.uk as they were the cheapest I could find. Three days later I was informed it was going to be a month and a half before I recieved it, no indication that they didn't have them in stock when I placed the order. Fuck that I thought, I'll cancel. Sent them an email and forgot about it. Two weeks later, after looking around a few places and finding nobody who actually had any in stock, I'd not heard anything from GAK. Bad customer service I figured, but I've come this far, might as well wait. A month and a half later, I recieved the amp. I'd finished any recording I needed it for, so I plugged it in -- seemed to work -- and left it for a time I needed it. That time came last December; switched on the amp and after a few minutes christ did it distort, even with the volume down at 1. Looked in the back and one of the valves was glowing bright red, far too hot. I ordered a new set of valves. They arrived a few days later but didn't solve the problem so I organised with GAK to send it back, as it was still under warranty. Due to my laziness and lack of urgent need (again!) for the amp, I only got round to sending it back last month. Returned to me within 1 week with the following note: Replaced faulty valve. Fixed dry joints on PCB. Tested OK. So there was the problem! Fender don't bother to test for dry joints before they send an amp out to a customer. Also, after reading around on the internet, you need to take out the top-middle screw on the backplate, otherwise it buzzes like fuck. This isn't just a problem with mine, it's a design fault in all of them. At this point you have to wonder how Fender got anywhere without actually testing ANYTHING. Moral: just buy things from Ebay, it's easier, they've been through all this for you and you might save 50 quid. Anyway, I now have the working thing and it sounds great. Only problem is, it's LOUD. I put it next to an old 60w solid-state amp I have here, and the Pro-Junior is far louder, though it starts to distort earlier (and the distortion sounds niiiice, though I'm not sure my neighbours will be able to put up with the volume for long at that level.)
